The Team House podcast did a great interview with Peter McAleese (The big guy at 0:52) about this operation. A bunch of veteran mercs trained in secret for months on a assassination raid on Escobar's compound and it probably would have succeeded if not for an inexperienced helicopter pilot who flew through fog into a mountain.

Idk if you've heard of the bayou of pigs, there was a soldier if fortune from Texas and white nationalist from Canada who plotted to hire more mercs and overthrow the tiny island of dominica to reinstate the former president who they recruited with the intent of getting sole monopoly access to industry and tourism they were going to construct plus a bunch of money up front. It legit most certainly would have worked except instead of buying a boat they payed a guy to take them there under a flimsy cover story and they dude was extremely suspicious thinking they were with drug cartels so he informed to the FBI and got them all arrested at the pier with all the guns. @notsocoolguy84923 жыл бұрын
There were bodyguards literally around him. Plus that was in his ranch (where the world usually gets the footage of Pablo's life outside the "action"). Colombia was (and still is) a dangerous place for anyone. *ANYONE* .
@sumvs59923 жыл бұрын
@@notsocoolguy8492 my point about colombia was about corruption. If the army isn't even going to try to overwhelm his ranch with soldiers, regardless of him having bodyguards, it "really says something about the state of Colombia back then".
@notsocoolguy84923 жыл бұрын
@@sumvs5992 my point still stands. Not only was the government after Pablo (the side Pablo hasn't bribed, scared, or killed), but he also had to deal with paramilitary groups, other rival Cartels (like Cali), Los Pepes, and so on. So although Pablo was living the high life, he wasn't exactly living the easy life. All it takes is the right bribe from just about any of Pablo's enemies to see him dead. Your quote could also apply to my point. In fact both our points go hand in hand together. Imagine that. As for your comment, there are many reasons why that couldn't happen. 1. The ranch is both ridiculously massive, and remote. Logistics would've been stressful at best. 2. Bribes because duh, Colombia. 3. Pablo has other properties to retreat to. 4. Pablo still had considerable support from the people (even after the plane bombing). So killing him would've caused uproar. Even after death, he's still remembered in the same way Che Guevara is still remembered. 5. Killing Pablo first would've caused more harm than good, creating a power vacuum that would cause more violence (like what happened in real life). 6. Covert operations (CIA was involved, shocker) were more successful at choking out the Medellin than overt operations although the latter did happen at some points. So to summarize this entire response: I'm not saying your point is wrong. But what I am saying is that it's only half of the scope of what Colombia was like back then, that's all.
