As a Sri Lankan who has spent most of their (relatively short) life overseas, the war has always looked more like a massacre to me. Atrocities fought with atrocities, from suicide bombings to saturation artillery fire on civilian-populated targets, hospitals, infrastructure ect. There are few things that generate more collateral damage than two-way guerrilla warfare among civilian zones. These are situations where ordinary people become an inescapable part of an environment filled with indiscriminate measures. At the end of the day though, we all come home at some point, we all must bury our dead eventually - with honesty, we're all human, all else are occupations.

Sri Lanka was a conflict that still mesmerizes me, a small country with a relatively heavy fighting and a large mobilization of military troops and equipment. For such a small area it was truly intense.
@malithaw3 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, its kinda crazy because at the final stage of the ear, sl army had a total of around 200k men mobilized which was unheard of at that time. Also the opposing LTTE were an interesting bunch. They evolved from a terrorist guerilla outfit who mastered suicidial bombing to a military org which fought conventional battles against the sl army. Not gonna lie, Had they fought the war with guerilla tactics, they would have had a real chance at winning the war- especially at the early stages of war when sri lanka was not only fighting LTTE in the north but also a communist insurgency in the south .

@malithaw3 жыл бұрын
@ Not really, they could have never won the war and the only reason that the war dragged on for so long is because of the sl gov's incompetence. The moment government made right choices and let the military do its own thing while comitting to a total war with a comprehensive strategy LTTE started to fall apart. Also LTTE had wiped out all other rival eelam groups long before the first eelam war so that really had no effect on the final outcome. As for the china being mentor, it was more of the main weapons supplier than mentor. It was Pakistan that played a role similar to mentor especially when it came to providing close air support and coordinated groud strike training to sl army and SLAF. India too played an important but a covert role in the final war by sharing information and equipment.

Thanks MajorSamm! I requested a video on Sri Lankan war a few months back. My call has been answered. Thank you. I'm Sri Lankan and I lived through this war for most of my younger days. I never was near the war zones in the north and east. But it indeed was a horrific period which, due to the length of the time the conflict was on, become very normalized for us. For example, getting instructions at school about what to do in case of a suicide bomber attacks was a part of the normal school experience, so was the constant reminder on tv about parcel bombs left on buses and trains. But we accepted that as almost as if it's just another fact of life and carried on. Thankfully the war ended in 2009. We were left in peace for almost a decade when the easter attacks happend, which created a war-like environment again in the capital and the suburbs. That felt very alarming and then only we realized that it was never a problem for us ten years ago only because we were so bloody used to it!

Fantastic dude! I loved how as the song got more melancholic, the videos descended more into conflict and it goes really well with it! Keep it up!

Interesting to see those South African 'Buffel' APC's at 2:01. Didn't even know we exported those at the time.

This is the Unicorn not the original Buffel. Unicorn is a homemade Sri Lankan version of the Buffel.

@@malithaw Cool, thanks for the info! I'm guessing we sold you a couple of example vehicles and you modified and produced your own from then on?
@malithaw3 жыл бұрын
@@ANWRocketMan yeah I think we bought around 40 of buffels and later used its design to make one of our own. Afaik all buffels are now out of commission, only unicorns and a unibuffels (an improved version of unicorn/buffel) are in service now. I really like it's unique design so kudos for you guys for making the world's first MRAP with such a cool design!

When I was a kid, I met a man in his late teenage years who was Sri Lankan, he told me he came here to the us during the war to escape when he was younger. Watching this video immediately rehashed that memory in my mind

1:22 you can see the funeral poster of a monk that was legendary during the war among rural villagers, the ltte was carrying out massacres and the monk was against letting villagers abandon these villages and run away. Sadly he was killed along with 14 other monks including child monks in the aranthalawa massacre. There's a movie with a monk based off on him called Gamini. I recommend highly to watch this, it's a good movie.

Great upload Major, watching this videos is a reminder of how many beautiful places in the world have endure the plague of war. I hope one of these days you could do one on Colombia and the longest civil war active to this day. My folks were lucky to survive the 80's and 90's.

This is a fantastic piece, the thematic build-up with the crescendo that came with it. You convey a lot of feeling in the videos you upload. it's not gratuitous gore and splatter, it's human kind at its worst and finest. Life is cheap, indifference reigns but we can also (sometimes) rise above and shine a little. That's what I see in a lot of what you do. Thank you!

I feel sad for Sri Lanka. They used to be one of the richer countries in Asia, so much so that even Singapore asked them for economic advice when it gained independence. Unfortunately as my history teacher put it, the country literally tore itself apart.
