The creepy little mannequin at 23:54, those were charity collection boxes for the 'Spastics Society' common all over the UK right up until about the late 1980s. They came in a variety of models with each one featuring a different disabled kid, with a coin slot cut in the top of their head.

Peter Kay's love letter to the vanishing northern social club scene
@JacknVictor

Not so vanishing any more. These places are on the rise again. They are doing better than pubs and nightclubs, due to the fact that you can still get a sub-£3 pint in these places. Sone as low as £2, which nowadays, with everyone being skint, seems to matter. Also these places do exist down south aswell. I lived in Dagenham and other southern areas in my time and was a member of many clubs like this down there. I know for a fact these places are in the increase because our company supplies them up and down the country, and their popularity has increased our revenue by the increase in orders we received. It's not just old farts and everyone's nan and grandad attending. 18+ are going in. A lot of them go in to get cheap drinks before heading on a night out, to save paying nightclub and pub prices.

Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere is the spin-off show to watch after you have finished watching all of Phoenix Nights. It focuses on the two Bouncers from this show as they go off in an RV and tour the country. Great thing about Phoenix Nights and Peter Kay shows like this are that there are quite a few ad-libbed or unintentional moments that get recorded whilst filming and then they during editing decided to keep them in the show as it turned out to be quite funny. So in this first episode the scene where Peter Kay is running back to the club with the fish and chips and trips over was an accident. Peter didn't see a string of wire running across the car park and was legit tripped up by it hence his winded appearance afterwards. Also when Paddy McGuiness says the line "He's brought them and he's dropped them!" that was adlibbed and when he walks up to check on Peter and you can see why he reacts rather angrily, grabbing the wire and ripping it down and says "What's this bastard wire here?". In the outtakes/deleted scenes on the DVD releases Peter Kay ended up having to sit down then as he'd actually quite hurt himself tripping over the wire.

Peter Kay plays four parts in 'Phoenix Nights' : Brian Potter, Max (the bouncer), Paul Le Roy and Keith Lard. EDIT: To answer your question, Roy Walker is a Northern Irish comedian and presenter. He was the original host of the game show Catchphrase (1986 - 1999) on UK TV.

This is based on what are known as "clubs" or 'social clubs'. They are (sometimes members-only) clubs in Northern England mainly, where they serve cheap booze, have themed nights, bingo, dances, raffles, karaoke, competitions for darts, dominoes, singing, as well as local musical acts and talent shows etc. They usually have room which can be booked for private functions. Very much a northern working class type of establishment. Another name for them is 'working men's clubs'. They were considered to be quite 'naff' and out of date even in the 90s. I'm not sure how many are still around, but they were very common in the North not so long ago. The Phoenix club is meant as a kind of parody of those institutions. The aesthetics of the place, the clientele, the acts - they all seem very familiar and nostalgic to me! I used to frequent one in Silsden, W. Yorkshire. I went a few times and then became a member, for the price of about £3 (if I remember correctly) in 2005 as a young man. These places are like going back in time to a bygone age. Peter Kay is a Northerner, and so are most of the cast, and they will be familiar with these establishments, so are able to make a decent comedic approximation of one.

Its exactly like a British legion club, so probably similar yes Brad, but Brian Potter is always attempting for the club to be something a little bit more, but ultimately failing. Its very Northern English humour. This show goes from strength to strength. So glad you're reacting to it. Max(Peter Kay) and Paddy(Paddy Mcguiness) are the bouncers here and they did their own spin off TV comedy series. Thats also brilliantly funny. The guy(Roy Walker) who Brian Potter was trying to butter up in this episode, was indeed the original presenter of Catchphrase, a late afternoon quiz show in England. This is a subtle joke as well, as he'd be classed as a B rated celebrity nowadays and all Brian could afford to book to appear and open the club. The guy who was on the mic is also a comedian in his own right, Dave Spikey. There's lots of great comedic actors in this show!!

This is more like a documentary if you had known Adlington British Legion club in 1982. They managed to book a group who sang "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" at the height of the Falklands war. The stage was bombarded with beer mats and empty glasses. Three people emptied the one arm bandits, as one couldn't be trusted, two could make a deal, but there was insufficient for three! Committee meetings were a laugh a minute.

Fun Fact; The guy that plays the young DJ wearing thick glasses is Daniel Kitson, now regarded as one of the greatest and most innovative stand ups of all time. His experiences on this show, at the beginning of his career, were so bad that he has since refused to do any T.V. work whatsoever. He cites it as the worst thing he’s ever done in his career and finds the frequent casual racism throughout the whole series as particularly uncomfortable. Peter Kay now only refers to Kitson as “that bastard”.

Max and Paddy, the two doormen, first appeared in this, then when this finished they did an offshoot series concentrating on just the two of them. Also, there's a lot of references to older celebrities and UK culture and such that, unless you grew up with them, you most likely won't get. Roy Walker, the celebrity opening the club is one of them. Famous a while ago for once presenting a quiz show called 'Catchphrase', there were a few jokjes around that you completely missed lol
