I heard this version in my sixth floor walk up in Sugar Hill in upper Manhattan, Harlem, back in 2010. I was 25 years old then and thought my youth was gone. This song was a kind of lament for me. The truth was I had years ahead of me. I left NYC shortly after for the American west, and pursued writing, art, teaching, new friendships, and new love. This song was a kind of nudge for me, and I never regretted it.

I was 16 when I discovered this great song. I remember liking a girl, a friend, who humiliated me on account of my skin color and my height. She'd constantly remark how the only acceptable looks in a guy are being tall, white, and having Eurocentric features. I'd watch this video wishing to look like one of the boys here, I would have given anything to change my looks. I started to hate my color, my genetics and even my parents for it. My sadness was overwhelming and it sounded like 'Rome rome rome...' Of course, time heals everything and I learned to accept, and love myself and realize I am enough. People are entitled to like whatever color, height or features they want in a partner, I get it, but never make someone feel less for what they look like, don't tell them they're inferior, you don't know how many tears will fall there.
