One thing I like is how the case difficulty ramps up with the plots of the culprits. The easy first case is almost always an impulsive kill, while the final case is a years in the making plot undone by an extremely innocuous detail that you still need to handle with care.

Similar choices in the Ace Attorney scenario do in fact give you a semi-choice in the matter, even though in those cases the game will still steer you in the direction it wants the story to go in the end. For example, in one part of the final case of AAI1, Edgeworth is given two extremely crucial pieces of evidence, but it is mentioned that said crucial evidence cannot legally be presented in court because of how exactly it was obtained. Eventually the player is given a YES-or-NO choice as to whether or not to use the illegal evidence… except that choosing NO will only result in Edgeworth hesitating for a bit, at which point all of his allies start saying “WTF Edgeworth; just present the freakin’ evidence already!” until eventually Edgeworth basically admits these aren’t normal circumstances (which they really weren’t) and goes “Screw it; IMMA FIRIN’ MAH EVIDENCE!!!”

Let's disarm this explosive case! Juniper Woods, a young high school student, stands accused of detonating a bomb in Courtroom No. 4. This blast had two casualties, Apollo Justice and Candice Arme, the latter suffering from a fatal wound, blunt force trauma from a flat surface. However, there seem to be some crossed wires here. Ted Tonate, a bomb defusing specialist for the police force, was the only one who both entered after the blast and last seen with Detective Arme. Before the trial, Ted Tonate was caught attempting to steal the bomb, an HH-3000, to sell on the black market. Arme caught him and, to protect his secret, beat her over the head with the bomb. He hid the body in the transport case he and Arme were in charge of. Later, during the trial in Courtroom No. 4, he activated the bomb timer, then deactivated it when everyone left, then reactivated it after moving the body from the case. Unfortunately for him, no Phoenix fears the flames when working with a hot button case like this!

Well there is a moment in the Phoenix Wright universe that splits into two storylines. I don't remember exactly, but Maya boards a train to her village to train full-time as a spirit medium. When Phoenix decided to go visit her, that led to Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations. But Phoenix has a parallel storyline where he doesn't go visit her, and that leads to the events that unfold into Apollo Justice and Dual destinies. Correct me if i'm wrong, i think thats how it goes.

No, all five (seven counting the Investigations games) all follow the same storyline. Apollo Justice takes place 7 years after Trials and Tribulations, with the trial in which Phoenix lost his badge taking place mere months after T&T. I hope that clears the confusion.

It's not selfish or ignorant. I'm actually really glad you used the homeless analogy because I actually work with homeless people once a fortnight. If a person is homeless and they're not willing to do what it takes to improve their situation then no, they don't deserve to experience all that life has to offer. Like life, the ability to experience a game is something you earn. It is not a right.
