Great comparison. The thing that’s sad is none of these features matter if the audiologist isn’t capable/knowledgeable with the product. I believe it’s time for manufacturers to require audiologists be trained with their products before being allowed to dispense them. Also the audiologists be required to have specific equipment and software in their practice in order to achieve maximum prescription targets for patients, making real ear measurements mandatory in fittings. Just like car dealerships are required to have certain equipment from manufacturers to perform maintenance services.

Actually I do agree on that point though at minimum they should have a test box you know?

@justicecenter, I agree with all of what you said. It is not enough just to have the degree. Practices should be required to meet minimum standards including a testing box and real ear measurements.

one would think that an audiologist has the knowledge need to do all this on hearing aids, bu I guess it's like everything else their too lazy to catch up on new haring aids or too busy when call they have to do is google them or call the Manufacturer, and I think it's better to call the manufacturer to get accurate detail because it would be more beneficial for the client and the audiologist because the audiologist will get more customers needing hearing aids

My audiologist recently left the practice to become the regional field trainer for Phonak. I'm sadded by this as she gave me great service and was really good about relaying my bug reports to both Oticon and Phonak, and getting back to me with fixes. I guess that shows why Phonak was ready to offer her the position.

I tried both for 2 weeks each. In noise, like a restaurant, the Oticon real is so much better in separating speech from background noise. The lumity is not even close. In a quiet environment they are similar.

I recently bought Oticon Real 1 hearing aids. My audiologist recommended them when I asked about music quality. I also read Apple Music has the best music streaming quality, if you’re looking for a huge music library to choose from. Last week I bought a new Sonos Era 100 speaker to complete the system. Oticon, Apple Music, and Sonos have given me hearing I had 30 years ago! My home office never sounded so good! I appreciate all the collaboration in technology to overcome hearing loss.

Thanks for your video. I have the P90 lumity. I would rather the hearing aids corrected the hearing loss as much as possible. Kind of like how glasses work not a 100% but close. Then there really wouldn't be a need for Bluetooth functions or streaming. Definitely like these options they do help. Hopefully there more advancement in hearing corrections. With either aids or regeneration. Your videos an other's help us make informed decisions.

This is a good comparison between Phonak Lumity and Oticon Real. I'm on my 3rd set of Phonaks over the past 12+ years or so, Audeo M currently, and it works well for me but it's draining the batteries very fast now. My audiologist just recommended the Oticon Lumity and we placed an order for a trial. After watching this, I realized that the Phonak is the winner with Android. I'm a Samsung diehard. No matter how good the aid, I'm not moving to Apple. Thanks Dr. Cliff!! One of my main criteria, for any aids, is that as a "hugger" I don't want the constant feedback. The current Phonak Audeo M won the purchase about 6 or 7 years ago!

Thanks for another great video. This comparison is just what I was looking for. I have been using 4 year old Resounds from Costco, and I thought with my profound hearing loss that either the Oticon Real or Phonak Lumity would be a major improvement. Right now I am doing a 2 week trial of the Real 1 (my audiologist doesn’t know how to set the demo units to Real 2 level), and then I will try the Lumity. So far the Real 1s do, in fact, provide me a much broader soundscape - I am literally hearing things my old aids ignored. And I like the seamless noise suppression a lot. Driving with the window down is actually possible now. However - and this is a BIG however - the Oticon app is absurdly impotent. The ONLY adjustment possible is volume. That’s it. So, I should spend $4,000, $5,000 or $6,000 (that’s Real 3, 2 + 1 pricing in my area - your pricing may vary), and be able to control no more than pushing the physical buttons on the aid? Just like you did 10 years ago, before apps were a thing. Not me. This video points out that many millennials buy the Real 1 because of its “natural” soundscape. Sure they do - show me a millennial that would tolerate the Oticon app. I won’t, and I’m 72. For example, last night at a live music venue the left aid was positively screeching and I had no way to adjust it. Except by lowering the volume to the point that the $6,000 Oticons did nothing at all. Thanks a lot Oticon! My old Resounds use an app that I downloaded 4 years ago and has never been updated - unheard of in the app business. However it provides MUCH more on-the-fly control, and, of course, it allows me to tune in the most pleasing soundscape and save those settings as a personal program. I just hope that the Phonak gives me better sound quality and better control over that sound, or else it is back to a manufacturer that is largely ignored these days. Because of the app. Period. Thanks again for the vids - they are truly excellent!

@palmer426, I hope you add comments about how it went with the Lumity. I have the Lumity right now but it's my first hearing aid and I have severe/profound loss in the high to high-mid frequency range and I use an Android phone. The Phonak app has many adjustments, I just don't know how to appropriately use those adjustments since I am new to hearing aids. Also, I am really liking the ActiveVent as a person who spends most of my leisure time in nature.

@@nataliel2853 I will, except the loaner Lumitys my audiologist had were broken, so still waiting for a replacement. Many people don't need to make adjustments, some do (like me). The Lumity 90 will auto-select the best program based on where you are, and that is an excellent feature. More to come, hopefully.

As somoene who has had a previous generation of both devices, I'm saddened that Oticon hasn't done more to complete with Phonak on features. I liked the sound quality of the Oticon OPN1s I started with better than my current Phonak Audeo devices. However tap control is a real game changer. I realize this video is a year old and Oticon has come out with the next generation of their devices, which have now added tap control, but what they added doesn't measure up to what I already have with my Phonaks. Also, this being a year old video, I agree that at the time the video was made, the Phonak app disconnecting when you closed the app and waiting for it to reconnect to the devices each time you started it was truly a PITA. However either an IOS update or a Phonak app update has fixed this. It still has to "connect" each time I launch the app, but it's gone from between 10 and 30 seconds down to about 2 seconds, enough that I barely notice the wait any more. I use it all the time to "mute" my devices before putting on over-the-ear headphones to use with my computer. I CAN use the Phonaks with the computer, unlike my Oticons, but I'm on my computer ALL DAY, and that would really kill my battery life. Also, sound quality when used in the Bluetooth "Headset" profile sucks on a computer. It's fine on my iphone, but my Windows PC just doesn't sound good for anyone on the other side of 2-way communication, if they can hear me at all.

I am 72 and lost my rt. Eardrum when I was 5. Long story but by the time my family Dr sent me to my ENT I had swam all summer ear started draining. Qtip was the reason but family Dr should have done better. At least tell my mom to keep my ear dry. My ent made me an eardrum out of my blood vein in my arm. My workplace had hearing trucks come out annually. I never have had much if any hearing in that ear.. belltone did a hearing aid in it in the 90s. It was horrible. I know things are different now. I live alone so I really don’t need a aid unless I eat out with my children. Just can’t rear conversation on the table. OK. WHAT I would like to know in the video is how the onicon would work with my Apple Watch 8. Also on the ONICON CAN YOU USE YOUR IPHONE AS A TABLE MICROPHONE KINDA LIKE A ROGER TYPE DEVICE in a restaurant. My sister has the phonak paradise and like you said she gets so frustrated with the app using her iPhone. Since I live alone I’m going to try using AirPod pro 2 through my phone using live hearing and go from there. Insurance is Blue advantage using TRU HEARING , both these brands get a discount on tru hearing…do you have any videos on the actual TRU HEARING BRAND HEARING AIDS. I think they work with apple. I originally purchased phonak OTC hearing aid years ago but wasn’t satisfied with their performance. Another audiologist from a different group was recommended and she put me in Signia hearing aids with domes. I wasn’t satisfied and then she suggested molds. I used the mold for a while but was getting a lot of feedback and still had issues with them too. Now I’m back to domes, but my hearing seems to be getting progressively worse. Is Signia a good brand. Could another brand be more effective? I now simply leave the conversation once more than 3 other people join in. I’m desperate to find a better solution than what I have. The reality is that the majority of hearing aid users are technically unsophisticated seniors. The more features the higher the frustration by us. The audiologists do a miserable job of setting the stage for success with an upfront conversation/explanation of the intended performance. They believe that magically we will see from their point of view. In the month that I have had my phonak nadias nothing has gone as advertised. My wife has spent hours and hours daily resetting, repairing, re etc. this Wednesday will Be my third visit in as many weeks so the audiologist can figure out what is working and what is not. Lastly I believe that the creators/providers of hearing aids do not wear hearing aids so they have no point of reference or understanding of daily performance or the lack of. A comprehensive list of possible problems with a simple and clear resolution in non technical language would be in order.

Clearly Phonak blows away Oticon when it comes to the connectivity capability and gadgets. On the other hand, Oticon offers a more inclusive hearing possibly g experience with their More approach to listening. I use the Oticon More 1 and find the inclusive rather than blinder hearing and noise to be enjoyable. Also, despite your comment, the music quality with ear molds is outstanding and the connectivity is good even when I am out walking. Can you do a Oticon Real vs Resound Omnia comparison!
@Claude-3
@Claude-3 Жыл бұрын
You mention how great Oticon is for High frequency hearing loss. I have a mild and stable loss in mid frequencies, but 60 decible Low frequency loss which is progressively getting worse. What would work best. Is there another hearing aid or type of style designed for Low frequency hearing loss (i.e. dome vs. ear mold)? My audiaolgist reccommended the Oticons even though they carry the Phonak.
@ArulaesseSender

I have low frequency loss (~40db by now), Oticon Real 1 with ear mold just do a great job for me Note that I’m having the earmold not because it was bad with normal dome, but I just have very sensitive ears, so with silicon domes my ears were always irritated and itchy. Low frequency loss is very rare and tricky from fitting perspective, but I now that Oticon should still do a good job even with more severe hearing loss, but just give it a try and see if it works for you

I'm still in my trial period from the VA with my Lumity devices. The connectivity is fantastic, but the wind noise attenuation is almost non-existent. I'm thinking of trying the Starkey Genesis AI.
@kaylasmusic
@kaylasmusic Жыл бұрын
@@watermain48 Your audiologist could probably fix that as well.. There's a feature for that that probably has to be applied.. I usually never have the wind issue unless its super windy or going straight to the microphones, which is normal for any BTE hearing aid.. How do you find the sound quality to be? I find them to be better than Starkey's sound quality.. I have started out trying the lyric (which is also from phonak).. Those have the best sound quality that exists because it uses your natural ear's anatomy to amplify the sound, so I've ever since used that as the reference of sound quality.. I unfortunately wasn't a candidate for the lyric in the end because it gave me infections and stopped working in my ear a lot.. So unfortunately I had to switch :(.. I've tried the IIC but I'm sure the new Genesis AI is probably also great too and probably both have similar sound quality. I find tI tried resound but had no luck with those, but the Lumity microphone piece fits behind my ear the best and I think offers the most optimization. It also depends on your hearing loss and needs.. And as just like a cellphone or any device, its all up to you and your doctor how it will function.. There's many great features on a lot of the new hearing aids now a days.. I have also wanted to try the new genesis AI but was told I am best off with the lumity and that I also can't switch devices since my trial period is up..

I'm trying to like them but they have an offensive upper mid/high freq oscillation. Most of the time when transitioning environments / sound levels. Widex seemed more organic where I'm still dialing in the Beltone's. Don't see much on Beltone's on YT, even though they have been around for decades. Have 40 more days to decide. Your thoughts on Beltone? Already have heard plenty on Oticon/Phonak. Thanks! Love your channel!

From an Audiologist. Battery life and reliability after a couple of years for each brand should have been discussed. And which product has had many repairs on their products vs the other. At least with their previous models. Both great products though. I agree that to focus more on voices in noise go for phonak. For sound that appears transparent, like you aren't even noticing amplification but hearing better esp for milder losses the Oticon is great. And yes for very sharp high frequency losses go oticon if you want open domes. Although phonak has improved its anti feedback recently. They just keep getting better

So nice that there’s a comparison video between these two hearing aids. It’s nice to be able to compare any features that could become a dealbreaker. I do have a question about the Phonak recharger and tap control functions. My understanding is that the onboard carry and go chargers is only available on the Phonak Life and that some tap control features are only available on the top 90 and 70 technology platforms. I don’t think that either is a dealbreaker at this point. And I have a wonderful hearing care provider at Salem Audiology Clinic in Salem Oregon from your network of providers. Not sure i am allowed to mention his name. He is knowledgeable, kind and helpful and takes time to answer any questions i may have. And unfortunately for him, i ask many,many questions but he’s always prompt to respond. I could not have better care.
