Q: If you were to start over from nothing, had a shoestring budget, and wanted to shoot film, what would you recommend someone buy for a camera, lens and film stock?
/ fie.franciska
Q: After a year off of the real world, I’m really nervous about getting back out and stop being creative. I can’t stop, otherwise I would go insane. But, I need to go get a 9-5 job and I’m afraid of just getting stuck in that. Top tip for not getting lost in reality?
/ jaredmthomas.photos
Q: Hey Nick, love the videos. I was wondering: what do you think is the most comon misconception about photography?
/ robertmpoole
Q: Any advice in focusing a Leica in very low light?
/ u.b._smiley
Q: What do you feel as a photographer has been your impact within the world?
/ eriktuub
Q: Hi Nick, I have a question for your Q&A. It’s about asking for feedback on my work. I am trying to improve and consider the opinion and feedback of other photographers very valuable. But who do I ask for feedback? A photographer I already know? Or someone who has shown some interest in my work, or a photographer I admire? And how important do you feel the feedback of others is?
/ markwilliamholmes
Q: If you could take a workshop with any photographer (I suppose dead or alive) who would it be? If you could just grab lunch with any photographer, who would it be?
/ doyoudevelop
Q: How strict are you with your photography: you mainly shoot black and white film, occasionally color as you’ve mentioned. Under what circumstances will you break free from your standard approach towards work, and venture into a field that isn’t your usual approach. Vice versa, under what circumstances will you refrain from shooting color? This also goes for other things such as film format etc.
If you have any other questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below, and I will be sure to add them to future Q&A videos! Also, let me know your comments on some of the topics discussed. Is there anything you would like to hear me expand on in future videos?

Jahan Saber haha it was one of those points worth taking a second to recognize. What was your thoughts on my answer to your question. Did I answer it?

Yes, I couldn't watch the whole video at once so I just caught up with it! I think it's interesting how most of the time the constraint is always gear. It's the most natural restriction. Like Bresson, he had his M3 and his 50 and couldn't even afford anything else. It's all he had. Right now i'm curious as to how restrictions on style and gear simultaneously affect the workflow. I've been trying to hold back from shooting things I've shot before that maybe seem "overdone" in my personal level. I'll often go through scenes and think "i've done this before" and start a critical thought process about why I'm so interested in shooting it. It brings back the whole idea of a "modern" film photographer - we shoot film because we value moments and the restriction that film itself gives (compared to digital of course). I have 36 images on my camera and I want to make the most of them. When I started shooting film I took around 1-2 weeks to finish a roll, because every shot was so treasured. I've come to the realisation that i've fallen into the trap of being too reckless sometimes. Either way, it's a constant back and forth between finding the right balance of value and what's really worth shooting. Anyways .. food for thought! Happy to have had another interaction like this with you buddy!

Yea I can understand that. For me, at this point I have no problem being "reckless" in my shooting. And I still enjoy having the conversations I am having. If I shoot the same thing over and over its because I feel there is something more to be said, or a greater means of expression to be had. I don't find that I shoot just to press the shutter, its definitely based off of an emotional response to that which I'm shooting. My current thought process is I am more capturing a string of responses more so than actual individual images. That could change tomorrow. But I am also creating work that continues to speak to me when I go back and look over it, so I am in no rush to change my direction.

Nick Exposed hey bro! I love your vids as usual. I have one question how do you print your zine since you use film? Do u scan it?
@NickExposed
@NickExposed 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Theo, thanks for the kind words man! I do scan them in. I get everything scanned in and then make my adjustments in lightroom before exporting them over to indesign to finalize the zine layout and send out to the printers. I have an entire series on zine making as well as an episode on editing my film scans if you are curious about those processes. Thanks for the comment

Hey Nick! I’ve been really having some bad experiences lately. There’s been some instances where people get mad and freak out cause I take a picture of them. I love going out and shooting street photography in my town. But I’m losing my groove and my courage lately. This ultimately led me miss a lot of good shots. How do I get out of the pit I fell into??
@NickExposed

That's a really good question. I think its different for everyone. I would have to say being confronted is a part of the street photography game. I get confronted often. I enjoy getting confronted however, it gives me an opportunity to love on people and share a genuine compliment or encouragement with them. I would encourage you to get back out there and when people confront you, treat it as an opportunity to encourage "Hey I really love that shirt" or "Your glasses are so unique". Whatever the trigger in your photograph was, let them know. I hope that helps

I find Bruce Gilden obnoxious tbh 😂 but I can see why you'd want to talk to someone who has a totally different perspective. No point in just reaffirming our own prejudices in the conversations we have. Interesting video Nick 👍

Also that's actually really interesting how self imposed limitations work well for you. I think I might become more focused on one camera, one format / film and see if it releases me in the same way

That's definitely a large part of it. He's got the New Yorker bluntness to him that is much different then how I relate to people. But I enjoy conversations with other perspectives like you mentioned. Thanks for sharing buddy
