In wartime, how do you find out what your enemy is doing? And how could the de Havilland Mosquito help?
In this video, we discuss one of the lesser-known roles of the Mosquito - photo reconnaissance. It may be less glamorous than fighters or bombers. But it was vital to the success of the war effort.
During World War Two, there were a number of ways of finding out what your enemy was doing. You could listen to their radio traffic. But this was often encrypted, so you had to turn to code cracking services, like the famous Bletchley Park, to help read the messages. And that took time. You could send in spies, but good spies were few and far between. So the solution was - aerial photography.
At the start of World War Two, Britain was dangerously short of reconnaissance aircraft.
What was needed was a fast aircraft, with a long enough range to fly around Europe.
So the authorities turned to de Havilland. Could the Mosquito, which was intended to be a fast Bomber, be converted to carry all the cameras, film and other equipment that was needed for the specialist task of photo reconnaissance?

It is not the overlapping images that provide a 3D image, this is merely to cover a larger area. 3D images are obtained from consequtive frames from the same camera, the interval in exposure providing enough distance between images to provide a 3D image when viewed through a stereoscope.

An excellent and heart-warming presentation. When I was a young boy and asked myself what do I want to be? I wanted to be a photographer who took pictures from a plane. It did not turn out right that way, but I became an industrial visualizer in the energy field. In 1987 I made a TV Documentary about the European Ariane lifter and the European Space Program. Thank you from Oslo. Keep up your good works.

You should list basic performance data for this and other aircraft you feature. Particularly speed and service ceiling!

I'm a Mosquito fan, please make a video that shows how, in the high altitude marks, de Havilland managed to pressurize the cockpit of the Mosquito, if its fuselage was made of wood. Thank you for your work.

@@deHavMuseum Thank you very much. The Mosquito is my favorite plane since I read the book 'Mosquito - The Wooden Wonder' by Edward Bishop when I was about 15 years old, today I'm 56, even after reading several other books and watching many videos, this question about pressurization has not has been clarified. Greetings from Brazil.
