This has to be one of the best bird photography channels on KZbin! It's quite unreal so few people know about it. I really hope the algorithm kicks in. For me I believe it was a recommended video after watching one of Morten Hilmer's video that led me here. I truly love your content, keep it up! :) Cheers from Hungary.

Your films Mike are inspirational! I would never have thought of spending a day on the beach photographing gulls, but the way you shoot, they look something special. I must get down low more. For your comment on using zoom against fixed lenses, I could not agree more

Great video again! The gulls were good but the sanderling clips were the best! When I video wildlife I find it very frustrating - when I do slow motion and a bird or animal doesn't move, the clip is too boring to watch, but if I keep it at normal speed and they do something interesting, I miss the action which would be better seen in slow motion!

great slo mo shots of the sanderling, really enjoyed that. Very instructive id vid for the gulls too. Yet to see a Med gull for sure. Indeed I'm not 100% on the common. This vid helped a lot.

Love the video of the Sanderlings.... artistic and skillful. I know you have said it before but what are your video settings? Perhaps if you don't reply here you could state it on your next KZbin that has slowmo video.
@MikeLaneFRPS2 жыл бұрын
Slow motion is usually 120 fps in 4K. Shutter speed 250th. I am starting to use 240 fps HD as well, but suspect I need to keep the iso low when I do else quality suffers.

Thanks Mike for another great video. You always inspire me to get out there and shoot. I have trouble getting stills of Sanderlings let alone video as they are so quick. Good job 👏 👍🏻 Trying to get some footage of my local Grebes mating rituals at the moment in the local park. That defo takes patience, they are always in the middle of the lake ☹️

Thanks for another wonderful episode and it is true enjoyment. I am inspired to shoot wildlife videos too. Will you talk about the best way to set up cameras for filming?
@klackon12 жыл бұрын
I was a victim of that rule of thumb a couple of days ago sitting on a bench overlooking a large lake. Nothing much going on, the Great Crested Grebe had clearly had breakfast but I clung on - right up until I could no longer feel the shutter button through my gloves. Same thing yesterday out in open fields. It's the wind chill factor that is the killer. We really are suckers for punishment. I reckon you will enjoy using the OM1, when you get your hands on one. I'm loving mine.

Another very helpful (and soothing) video. Are you planning to have a look at the Olympus OM1 soon? In a previous video you mentioned that you had the 150-400 mm Olympus pro zoom, and with the new OM1 ability to shoot at up to 50 frames a second and with much improved autofocus this ought to be a great combination. I'd love to see your comparison of the OM1 to the A1 with the two zooms (almost as much as I'd love to hear that Great Yarmouth had been moved to Sussex!).

@davidmcaughtry4652 жыл бұрын
@Tord Andreasson and @Mike Lane FRPS , I got my OM1 in early March and I think it's fantastic particularly compared to the EM1x and EM1 Mark iii I had before. It's the lens choice I can't make my mind up on. I've got the 300mm prime and the 40-150mm pro but I really want to know if I should now spring for the 150-400, or buy an A1 plus the 200-600 from Sony, (which is the same price). Mike is the only guy I would trust to give a a balanced comparison between the two.

@@davidmcaughtry465 I own both the 300/F4 (since 2016) and the 150-400 F/4.5 (since Sep 2021). It depends on the subjects and situations. To summarize my view of the 150-400: - Weight: The 150-400 is and feels heavier than the 300/F4. However the weight is not an issue, handheld shooting with that lens is easy at last for me. For longer and action-packed handheld sessions, I'd rather use the 300/F4 though. - Balance: The lens is very well balanced and does not feel not front-heavy. The form factor and weight of the EM1X further improve balance and ergonomy. The torque exercised on the arms is equally important, if not more, than the weight. - Mechanical fit and controls: Excellent, spot on. The zoom and focus rings are silk smooth. I have medium-sized hands (8.5) and all controls (switches, buttons, collar lock) are easily accessible. - Optical quality: Stellar. But the 300/F4 is probably almost as good. I can't see any difference in IQ. - Compared to the 300/F4: My photo style sometimes involves waiting and shooting from static locations; sometimes from a hide or blind and with a tripod, but also often involves walking/biking to explore new locations, and in such situations, the portability of the 300/F4 is a blessing. Hence I will keep that lens, and in my view, it is a better tool for photos where 300mm gives you the desired angle of view. - Application area: For most bird photography, I would say the most useful range is probably 250-400 (500 with TC engaged, possibly adding MC14/MC20 for situations that call for even longer focal lengths). I have rarely used the lens at a shorter focal length than 250mm, but for wildlife and sports, it certainly is a useful range and it is pairing nicely with the 40-150 which has the advantage of being F/2.8. 150mm is too short though for the vast majority of bird photos. It would be great to read the views from those photographing wildlife or sports. I should mention I shoot mostly stills, and started shooting videos quite recently.

The Canon R3 comes with a special delete function due to the 30 frames per second. It delete all images from a series.

Great video Mike, I would really like to know your thoughts on using the 1.4 and 2x extender with the Sony A1 along with the 200 to 600mm lens. Keep posting 🙂
@MikeLaneFRPS2 жыл бұрын
Both extenders degrade the image, but it is marginal. Look at two images side by side and you can see the difference. Look at them independently and you are not sure which one has the extenders on. I use the 1.4x a lot. They must slow the AF down, but that is hard to measure and see.
@RichardWilliamsTravelandTech2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks a lot Mike I'm sat on the fence considering the 2x extender so this is really helpful.
