What's in my camera bag in 2021? In this video, I share my top 3 Fujifilm lenses for wedding photography, the cornerstone of my wedding photography gear kit: the Fuji 16mm 1.4, the Fuji 23mm 1.4, and the 50mm 1.0. I also discuss the Fuji 56mm 1.2 and the Fuji 35mm 1.4 and explain why they didn't quite make the cut as what I think are the best Fuji lenses for wedding photography and portraits. All example images were shot in raw with the Fuji XT3 (which has the same exact sensor as the Fuji XT4) and edited in Lightroom with my RBP preset pack (50% off until the end of 2020): reggiebphotogr...

My top 3 Fuji X mount prime lenses for weddings are: Fujinon 16mm f/1.4 WR Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 Fujinon 56mm f/1.2 When I need something wider, I use the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Fuji X mount. When I need something longer, I use an adapted Zeiss 135mm f/2 Sonnar. For ring shots, macro, and head & shoulder portraits, I use an adapted 55mm f/3.5 Nikon micro or an adapted 105mm f/2.8 Nikon micro. I also have the Fujinon 50-140mm f/2.8 WR and the Fujinon 16-55mm f/2.8 WR that I use as backups.

I jumped ship from Sony APS-C to Fuji. Went with an X-S10, Fuji 23 f2 (new) and Fuji 56 f1.2 (used for $500). I’m coming from Sigma 16 and 30 f1.4 primes. For shooting run and gun photo and video of my kids the 23 f2 with the IBIS of the X-S10 is amazing. At first I was disappointed with the softness of the 23 f2 close up but then started to stop down a little and stay 3-4 feet away from my kids and everything just comes together nicely. I’ll use the 56 1.2 when I can be more intentional and take my time with the shots. Thanks for your amazing content. Really helped in my decision making process.

Got to be the 90mm f2.0, 56 f1.2 and 16 f1.4 for me. I feel that covers enough of the range and gives me everything I need at events. I would also shout out the 16-55 f2.8 if you only had to take one lens, that one's a beauty.

Absolutely love the 16mm f1.4 - I use it all the time for super close, more than my adapted macro lens. I have always loved the ambience it gives. Second would be the 90mm f2 - super lens for close up work - my favorite, much more than 58 f1.2. I don't mind standing back further! Recently saw some reviews on the 18mm... it might be next on the list. In my current bag, the final lens is the 35f1.4. I use it more than anything else for photo shoots. It just "works".

My 3 favorite lenses? I only have 3 so they are my top 3! 🙂 My favorite is the 23mm F2 - I just love the versatility of the focal length along with the super fast AF. I do mostly landscape/nature so it works well for that type of photography. But I also found it very useful for street photography and architecture. I was in Las Vegas a couple years ago and I spent the entire time in a casino or walking the Blvd. In all cases the 23mm F2 was all I needed. There's lots to take in inside casinos like the Venetian or Bellagio and the wide angle worked perfectly. Then on the street I used it to take in a full shots of the casinos (as cliche as that is it was a lot of fun to do). Then there's always something going on at the street level and this lens work well for capturing that. I spent several days in Las Vegas and all I needed was that one lens!

I think that, especially in fashion work, there's something daring about bringing the 56mm f1.2 to a job. The thrill of chasing the manual shot (bc that autofocus has me fucked up) makes me love the shots I nail. I think, given the tactile nature of the XT series, the "zeroing-in" on the lens makes a grab more rewarding even though the security of knowing that you got it is very low. That said, I definitely agree with your statements above. 23mm next pick up.

Great vid as always. 23mm 1.4 is my all-time fav prime lens. I ditched the 16mm 1.4 since I struggled with the focal length: not wide enough for wide and too wide for everything else, I thought. But you really make the 16mm work you; I think these pictures are standouts among what is already a great crop. I’m in awe.

The 16 1.4 is on the top of my list as well. I can't describe what it is. It's one of those lenses that you can just fall in love with after spending time with it. Personality? Character may be? Really can't explain it pretty much like when you met someone you wanted to spend your entire life with. 23 1.4 is a very good lens. However, I found myself reach over and grab the 35 1.4 more often for some reason. The 23 1.4 can be a nice walk around lens tho sort of like your sister that you love very much but you don't have to spend so much time with but you do get along. The 56 1.2 is my most reliable lens, when it can focus correctly. I said that because I haven't get any bad photos from this lens since I bought it 6 years ago. But it's one of those lenses that only work when you have time to focus. Don't expect the lens to just grab the subject in split second. If you just carefully focus on the subject, you're guaranteed to get a breathtaking photo. The 50 1.0 is nice but I don't know if I really need it. At least not now.

Great point about avoiding distortion on the 16mm 1.4. I try to keep from pointing the camera up or down and raise or lower the camera height instead. I am considering switching to the 18mm 1.4 so that I can back away a little.

Have all these lenses. The 56 is my favorite in quality, but it’s hardest to shoot with at that focal length. 16 is just amaaaazing but also can be too wide. 23 is my least favorite in optics, but stays on my camera now most of the time, it’s the best all around Fuji lens. Just really can’t go wrong with these 3 as a combo for all types of shooting. Great video.

First ist the 16mm 1.4 because its very versatile, i like the look of this focal lenght and in some situations it's challanging. But i like this. Second lens is the 35 1.4. Here i like the character and the look wide open. Third ist the 50mm f2. I don't own the 56 1.2 at the moment but i like this too. It's small, fast sharp enough for me and fit wr and good micro contrast. Today i got the viltrox 85 mm 1.8 MK2. First shots looking good. But i have to do do some practice with it. So it's possible, that is a good focal lenght for me in the future. 😉 Thanks for all your good and useful content. Great work. 😀👌

6:52 When you account for crop factor, and match fov + dof, you also match total light gathered. For example, the Fuji 56mm at f/1.2 has the same field of view, dof and light gathering as a ff 85mm at f/1.8.

@jamesjackson4264

That is not true. A 1.2 has the light gathering of a 1.2. Any lens with 1.2 or whatever the opening it will gather that same amount of light no matter what format camera you put it on.
@johansphoto
@johansphoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesjackson4264 Yes, light gathering will be 1.2. However, he is right about the rest Dof is equivalent to 85 f1.8 ff, and so will low light capability be taking into account that noise is introduced at lower iso on the smaller sensor. Then again I never saw the need for anything faster than this.
@jamesjackson4264

(1) XF 16 1.4 (just perfect), (2) XF 50 F2 (light, very sharper) with Old Helios 44-2 58mm (bokeh monster) (3)XF 16-80 for the 23mm to 35mm range ("Swiss Army Knife", sharper for this range). Completely agree regarding the hunting and missed focus of the 56. It might be my favorite lens for what it produces, but it’s burned me multiple times where it looked sharp on the LCD but in post I could see that it missed. I’m a big fan of the short tele range (85 ffe), and while I’m not ready to pony up for the 50mm, I am curious. Other two favorite lenses are the 16mm 1.4 and the 35mm f2. I’ve not picked up the 1.4, but the f2 has been so good for me that I’ve just not found the need yet.

Terrific video! My thought about 56mm f1.2: I attempt to gain the best of both worlds: using 56mm in bright static portrait shots, and switching to 50mm f2 in quicker-paced [regardless of light] or lower light-with-flash shots. 50mm f2.0 is incredible for such usage. Yeah - 50mm f1.0 could be amazing, but it's SIZE, WEIGHT, and COST are such that I simply won't even try it. Well done!

The 23 1.4 is my favourite lens for the same reasons you mentioned. I take about 70% of all wedding photos with that lens. I also really like the 56, which is fast enough for my taste. I really like the size compared to the giant 50 f1. For portraits the 35 1.4 is my favourite. Question to all the Fuji shooters out there: Does anyone have the 18 f2? What is your experience with it? I find its size very intriguing, but I am not sure whether the AF is too slow. It is also quite loud.

I have the 18mm f2 and like it, mainly for daily shot and travel-street. It’s a fun lens to use and the image quality is pretty nice and sharp. It focuses really well with my X-Pro3, but I don’t think I’m gonna use it for video because it’s quite loud. Now I’m thinking of getting the 23mm f1.4 for better image quality and wondering whether I should keep the 18mm or just sell it even though I love its size and weight.

All things considered, the 50/1 seems like a side-grade compared with the 56, I don't have any focus issues with the 56. The 50/1 may need a rental trial period for me to even consider - since every review seems to be really trying to justify the increase costs of the 50, and in my opinion, not really coming through. When it comes to business purchases, they must absolutely make sense and be worth ever dollar since it affects the profitability, it doesn't appear that the 50/1 really brings anything for about 1.5x to 3x the cost of the 56 (new to used). That cash could go toward many other expenses that have an immediate and direct impact. With that being said, especially for weddings, my #1 is 16-55/2.8. This lens convinced me it was okay to have a zoom - it has that intrinsic Fujifilm quality at that makes it just right, and especially for the documentary style, it offers flexibility and is absolutely 100% solid at f2.8. #2 and #3 are 56/1.2, and 35/1.4. 56 hits the sweet spot for portraits, 35/1.4 comes in for low light situations.

Even though I got the "holy trinity" zooms which is the classic set up for landscape, being inspired by you I'm considering even building a primes set up, for some reason I thing it could benefit my composition skills or maybe do it easier by having just 3 focal lengths in my mind. @@konstantin7354 Check chrisopher frost's review for a good idea. wide open the lens has good resolution and rather low contrast. I view sharpness as the ability to transfer information to the sensor. Other people think of sharpness as have more of a contrast-y look. As for the price consideration, I wouldn't compare this to an 85 1.4 FF third party lens, but rather and 85 FF primary manufacturer lens so look at the 85 1.4s from Canon Sony and Nikon for better idea of "what it should be worth" .... I think fuji build is actually nicer than the other manufacturers but to each their own.

The lens size doesn’t really bother me that much for the 50mm F1.0. FujiFilm always have smaller alternatives if you need something light weight, but you just need to be prepared for that F-stop penalty. As most my photography is in low light and without a flash, I usually stick to the bigger aperture lenses (f1.0, and f1.4).

I am a Fuji user for four years now and love my X-T2, I even bought a GFX 50R recently. But I got a little frustrated, especially in terms of value for money. Most of the Fuji lenses are simply outdated and to charge 600 $ for the 35 f1.4 are just brazen. When the 56 was released it was indeed a great lens but now, I think it is a pricy and sluggish glass. I think the viltrox alternatives are awesome, because the deliver great value for the money. They are indeed not perfect, but the price is sufficient for the quality you get. I even prefer the viltrox 33/1.4 over the 35/1.4, because of its sharpness. I am also disappointed by the GFX system. The lenses are far too expensive for the actual quality they deliver. If Fuji really want to compete with sony/canon/nikon, Fuji need much better autofocus and faster lenses at a reasonable price for their GFX system.

Additionally i own lots of vintage lenses (M42 and Minolta) and I use them along with respective adapters. Mostly I use the 33/35 focal length, because it is the most versatile, especially if you just want to bring one lense. Of course I love the images you get with the 56, but as you pointed out, the focus is not always on point and I simply expect more from such an expensive glass, Eventually it translates to a 85/1.8 and there are a lot of great options in the FF world. Am I better off with the Viltrox 56 1.4 and take a hit on the minor reduction in optical performance? this would be less noticeable than missing focus in the moment imho. I'm an amateur with only 2 Fuji lenses (10-24 & 16 F1.4) so my opinion isn't worth much, but my thoughts are similar to yours. :) I came to my conclusion by thinking about what I'd want to see when looking through my family photo album years from now, and I think I'd want to see most shots done with a 23mm ("the norm"), and the 16, 35, 50/56 being used to deviate from the norm. That 16 is definitely unforgiving, and sadly I get more hits with the 10-24 for now. xD Have you considered making a "how to" tutorial for the 16mm that goes over the dos-and-don'ts? Purchased the 56mm 1.2 but returned. Lens is fantastic optically for what it does, but it is a very niche lens and at the price point, you have to be intentionally and constantly shooting at the 85mm focal length to justify it, IMO. Definitely makes sense for your work, and the 50mm F1, even more. I am in search of the best all around prime lens for family and occasional portraits. I am considering the 16mm 2.8 and 35mm f2 as a pair. Weather sealing is a big plus where I live. Thoughts?

I have compared the two personally and I found the Viltrox lacking in a certain look and feel that the 56 1.2 has. Fuji 56 is sharper and has better bokeh, at 1.2 it handles light better as well. It is definitely personal preference though, the Viltrox is not a bad lens at all and has a much more comfortable price point.
