Photographing Yosemite with Cinestill 50D

Is anyone else using CineStill 50D a lot? I’d love to hear your thoughts on best practices and situations that lend itself to making this film really shine!

Your Rolleiflex isn't a 3.5F model. It's an earlier Automat version. You can tell because it takes Bay 1 filters and has a Tessar lens. Also the shutter lock is a catch that swings across like a latch. The 3.5F takes larger Bay 2 filters, has either a Planar or Xenotar lens and has a different shutter lock and self timer amongst other notable differences.

I saw one video of a guy shooting 50D at 400, developed at a lab normally (no pushing). And it looks very good, even better underexposed than overexposed.

No, you saw twelve 6x6 shots of the 50D, then I searched to Portra 160. I labeled the Portra photos so you can see. The colors are vastly different as well.

When did you arrive in Yosemite? During the wildfires - was there any smoke? Had entry tickets for Sept 1st but passed due to wildfire fears 😕

it was right before the fires, so we luckily didnt have any issues.

Hey thank you for this video. One question: what colour profile do you use to scan cinestill films?

I scan as flat as possible and add contrast in post. Either that or I’ll scan as a negative and use negative lab pro to convert.

Nice! That first shot is superb! I think you're right about that film needing a crap ton of light. It always ends up looking really bland when I use it in the cold, dark Norwegian winter/fall/spring/most of the year. It does really well with push processing, though. Pushing one or two stops gives it some extra punch. Works well with flash too, speaking of crap ton of light :-)

Does CineStill require any filters or special processing from the lab?

Great question! CineStill requires no special processing, just normal C41 like any other color negative film. If you’re shooting 800T in daylight, it’s a good idea do use an 85 filter to balance the blue.

The only info I have on that camera is that it is expensive. I recently got a Minolta Autocord which I guess you could call a poor man's version of the Rollei.

I’ll be the contrarian, I liked the photos, but not a fan of the emulsion. The halation in the highlights just sets me off (you can really see it in the car shot 4:29). I shot one roll 6x7 and got similar results to yours. Now once you switched over to Portra160... 👍😀

i think the porta160, while nice, looks smeary and less vibrant in comparison. I should have overexposed it anyway, but i dunno, I really love the emulsion of 50D. If the halation bugs you, you can simply neutralize it easily in post. However, taste is subjective so I can't fault you there. I personally barely notice it.
