Late to the party due to reasons but Yvonne, you're the best and these videos are so much more valuable than the immense, immense majority of KZbin and Photography KZbin content. Thanks so much for going there.

Sculptors do not rip drywall apart as part of the sculpting process. You also cannot hoist a cubic meter of marble into the air on your shoulder. This makes no sense as a "sculptor's studio" and yet it fits Gaza to the tee. So no, it wasn't an oversight, it was intentional. To be an oversight they need an excuse that explains ALL details in an alternative plausible way, and they were unable to provide one. Only one theory fits the facts. I don't think your Picasso one does either, not because it doesn't fit some things, but because THEY didn't say it. Why would they not have if that was their inspiration?

Based on your thoughtful language in the rest of the video I don’t think you intended to take a side in the conflict, and if that is the case I’d recommend tweaking your synopsis of the Palestinian genocide this year. The war has been going on since 1948 and Israel has attacked Palestine and kept its people under apartheid unprovoked for much of this time. The idea that the war started after October 7 is being used to justify Israel’s horrific and disproportionate response since then and encourage people not to examine Israel’s treatment of Palestinians over the last 75 years. Again I don’t think you intended to send this message but you should reupload this with a more detailed synopsis, or no synopsis at all because that idea about October 7 is harmful

I hear you. I initially had a whole synopsis included in the video, but I took it out as I wanted the focus of the video to be on the Zara campaign, and I found I was sounding a bit more preachy than I had hoped. I am a photography KZbin channel, and it's sometimes hard for me to know the boundaries of defining proper context for the things I discuss. That said, I strongly agree that Israel is clearly the oppressor, and in my view Hamas is a reaction to that oppression. I didn't include these thoughts in the video as I assumed some political literacy on part of my viewer. I do this often, since my viewership is primarily left leaning and typically already has background knowledge on some of the topics I touch on.

Well done. I don't know much about the fashion world, but you held my interest throughout the whole video.

High praise! I appreciate that- I find the fashion world is most interesting (and most fraught) in the places where it overlaps with the real world

Interesting video, nice work. So the shoot was in September and before the hamas attack on Oct 7th? Is that correct?
@YvonneHansonPhotography9 ай бұрын
That is what Zara says, and I believe them. There have been folks saying that fash fashion doesn't have that kind of timeline, but this campaign is part of Zara's attempt to depart from the fast fashion business model.

This video’s industrial and supply chain critiques are legit, but I think the visual comparisons between the Jacket campaign and the Hamas war is spurious at best. I also think fuming over Baron & Baron’s neoorientialist and Tin-type inspired campaigns is silly because the orientalist and colonial styles were even in their initial contexts a reflection of western/European values and gaze than any true or genuine appreciation of near eastern cultures anyway. I don’t think there’s a lot of meat left on the bone of critiquing what is obviously an intentional copy of a copy of a copy. I think one of the reasons these campaigns are so attractive and successful is because the designers are emphatically superficial and irreverent towards the campaigns’ aesthetic historical-material baggage. But all this is fair. At the end of the day, the critic’s job is to drag ideas through the weeds, and the designer’s job is to sell pretty clothes.

I pretty much agree with all of this, and maybe I should have done a better job stating my position in the video. I think over all, its just not that deep. The inspirations are not that deep, Baron & Baron's direction is not that deep. I do think the lack of depth is what precipitated the current controversy, but I don't think that its a particularly punishable offence on part of the agency. Rather, I think it is maybe an inevitable state of affairs when politically charged imagery is used in an a-political context.
