The description that the shutter speed is responsible for not being able to illuminate the entire sensor is incorrect. The correct explanation is that the sensor is only fully exposed up to the synchronization speed, which is the maximum speed at which the camera can close a curtain, after that exposure time the second curtain is necessary and the sensor is only partially exposed and by parts until completing the correct exposure.

Correct and as both 1st and 2nd curtains move through the image only a slit of the image is exposed at a time. in HSS the flash fires just before the 2nd curtain starts moving and then every time the 2nd curtain reaches the point where the 1st one was during last firing thus illuminating the image in horizontal bands.

So if you were buying a new strobe for 'all around" shoots, which would you buy TTL or HSS or the combo?

I think we need a sketch to really understand, with the time on the x-axis.

Eh? You saying the flash does the TTL calc? I don’t think so… the camera controls TTL based on flash light hitting camera sensors

He said that TTL allows the flash to measure the light reflected through the lens. He isn't wrong because that's how TTL works - by using your camera settings and the light reflected back into the lens *ON TO YOUR CAMERA'S SENSOR* to calculate the amount of light to spit out. That's what he meant. Your flash has to interpret the reflected light by measuring it to decide light output.

OMG, it must have been difficult to put so many inaccuracies into such a short video. To begin with, HSS and TTL are not related. They are completely different things. And even the explanation of “TTL” (such a simple concept) is wrong: Not having TTL does not mean that you have to adjust anything manual. Automatic flash exposure is much, much older than TTL: The flash itself had an “eye” to measure light reflected off your subject - and adjust the duration of the flash accordingly. Switching on TTL just means that you’re using a different “eye”: Instead of the one on the flash, you’re using the one inside of the camera, measuring Through The Lens. This usually is more accurate as it takes the focal length into consideration (things outside of your image frame can’t influence flash exposure)….

Nowadays it's either or. Nobody wants to talk about ancient flashes back in the Stone Age as it doesn't apply to photographers today. So he's right in saying if your flash - any standard flash/strobe in the past couple decades or so - doesn't have TTL the only other option you have is to adjust flash power manually. Also, he never said HSS and TTL were related.

Awful explanation. No visuals at all. Not worth your time. He kind of shoots his explanation down around 2:10 when he talks of a traditional flash lighting your whole sensor, when he just stated the opposite happens (and limits the usefulness of a regular flash, if the shutter speed is too brief). You can find better videos on this topic.
