Cropping - The purpose of cropping in the camera is that it acts as a guide to what you might visualize for the final photograph. Why limit yourself to the default aspect ratio of your camera? Depending on how you crop a picture, that crop will put visual weight or emphasize different aspects of a composition. For example, a 16x9 vertical or horizontal might emphasize the height or length of the subject, forcing the viewer to follow a subject in a particular way. Unfortunately, more people don't use this powerful tool within their cameras. It's also sad that Nikon eliminated all unused pixels in the cropped RAW file. I use the crop tool within my camera constantly, as cropping during or after making an image is essential to the creative process. JMHO

I have used a cotton carrier for years. Especially while hiking and strap my Nikon D850, Grip, and Sigma 60-600 to it all the time. It is secure and comfortable. When I know I am not going to need an additional lens it is great. I also have the added attachment and when I want to carry an extra lens, I will strap on a connector and snap it to my belt. Really enjoy the addition of the podcast. I have been a follower since the beginning and look forward to each post. Keep up the great work guys!!

The added benefit of the crop mode is to add that bit of extra reach as you would get from a cropped sensor against a full frame. Downside is loss of Megapixels, zooming in further not always an option.

Hi Mark. There is zero benefit in using a crop mode for the purpose you describe, as the exact same result can be achieved by cropping at the post production stage. In-camera cropping achieves nothing which post edit cropping can’t do.

I have talked to several photojournalists over the years. They love assignments like cultural and civic events were people are in a good mood and are very approachable. But they found having to document a tragedy not very easy as they have to get some good photos with people who are very upset or trying to sort the situation.

The 4 TB memory card would probably be used in 8k raw recording which takes up around 122GB per minute. An hour of 8k raw is if I remember correctly 7.29 TB so on a 4TB memory card it would be around 25 minutes or so.

Another great podcast. I shoot wildlife mainly so there have been times when I have used the crop to get the subject a little bigger in the frame (and it’s supposed to help the AF too). Sometimes in the heat of the moment you don’t have time to add an extender or get closer, if getting closer is even possible. Then I may use it. But 90% of the time I don’t bother with it.

I might just be the person for whom crop mode makes sense. As a pensioner with medical challenges, I settled on a Sony APS-C set-up some years ago, for size & weight reasons, amongst others. Now I need blackout free shooting, so perhaps an A9 or A1 using my existing lenses is a way forward?

Crop mode on a full frame camera does give you the option of using good crop sensor lenses on your FF body.

35:53 On the what's the point article, isn't in camera cropping the same thing as digital zoom on a low end compact/all in one camera? On a full frame or apsc SLR then there is absolutely no point what so ever, in my opinion any way! And as for 4TB card, I agree with Nick and James, absolutely pointless.

All you need to do nowadays is glue your lips together when out about, the worlds gone soft. Dont speak to me like that, dont look at me like that, dont do this dont do that, people are to easily offended by soft remarks, no sense of humour nowadays.
