Justin this is a BRILLIANT and intriquing video man and thank you for taking so much time to put such a well researched and narrated piece together. I am off now for part two - Sean

Very poorly researched and perpetuates myths. Google is not a substitute for actual research.

@1:06 I am an adult and I would be scared, as well. Poor kids, that Easter bunny is an abomination.

Posed photos after death is supposed to be a myth according to my research and historians even said it’s a myth.

Absolutely correct.

Oh, I SO wanted to like this. But , the little girl, standing with her family in a row, the girl on a pillow, aren't dead. People were never photographed standing up in memento mori. The girl on the pillow is handicapped. These are known photos , please feel free to source them. Otherwise, it's a great presentation.

Not sure about this. I understand a wooden device was used to hold up the dead person in a vertical position? I am certainly no expert on Victorian necrophotic (just invented that word) practices but I can well believe it. Anyway, my general point holds, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Still Life - Art lol, i understand, yes. A good story. Its just a pet peeve of mine. Youd be shocked at what people try yo pass off as memento mori.

@@stilllife-artandthephotogr3494 There is a lot of good information and I appreciate the fellow passion! However, there were a few photos in here that were not deceased people. The device that is used to prop up bodies was used to hold people still because exposure took up to a minute and a half and you had to keep perfectly still. Due to rigor mortis, and physics standing corpse photos are impossible. There are but three, that I know of, that are actually standing and it is due to a family member or two, behind them, covered in a sheet holding them up. (You can notice in these photos the hands sticking out from behind the sheets) Your comment " Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" prevents you from telling an excellent one. Especially when the true story really shows the lengths the Victorians went to to make post-mortem photography an art. That being said, It does make me happy that people are excited about this form of remembrance because memento mori is both fascinating and beautiful.

@@ej5538 had nothing to do with rigor mortis, which is gone in several hours. Had everything to do with being dead. At no point in time did the Victorians pose the dead standing or upright. Ever. You speak of "hidden mother" photos, in which case a person was covered over to help keep a small child calmed for a photo, so they could photograph the child solo. The background would be darkened after photo was taken, and once framed you couldn't tell mom was there. Hidden mothers were never used for pm photos. Pm photos were not as popular as the internet would like people to believe, and they are quite obvious with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin. Period.
@irisheyesofbelfast2 жыл бұрын
@@ej5538 do you even know why post mortem photos were taken? The Victorians were not obsessed with death, and were not morbid as many claim they were. Pm photography wasn't an art form that they were perfecting. Photography was new, and with few photographers initially, getting everyone together and to a studio wasn't exactly easy. If someone passed before they could have a photo taken, a post mortem photo was better than no photo. Family bathed and dressed the decedent then laid them in repose in a bed or coffin and the photographer came to the home and took a photo. Don't go around correcting people when you don't know what you are talking about. How can you claim your interest, passion when you don't even know what a hidden mother photo is? One minute you're claiming to know of 3 genuine standing corpse photos, the next minute you say it's impossible. It's like you took bits and pieces you've read here and there, added your own twist, then try to pass it off as facts. You were right about the stand, but that's about it.

This was very interesting. In Norway it's very uncommon to have photographs on the headstone, I don't think I've ever seen one.
