Although to us this practice seems macabre, to the people living in these times it made perfect sense. It’s also interesting to guess which people in the photos are dead - sometimes it’s not so easy to pick.

That's true. In some pics it's really hard to say which one is the deceased.

How times turn around! Not uncommon now to see photos of stillborn babes, named and dressed. Very sad!
