When the surface tension sucks them in, they have no way of escaping. That's what fruit fly traps use as a mechanism. Water + vinegar + a drop of dish soap. Surface tension is broken, as soon as the flies go to drink, they're sucked into the liquid and drown.

I have a separate studio just to film time lapses. When I'm done with a project, I disinfect the remains with bleach and I throw them in the trash. You'll see less and less insects in the future videos because they disappear during the winter, but when the weather is nice some of them always find the rotting stuff. Then their number start to grow exponentially.
