In this video, I look at the new update to the standard Adobe Photoshop 2024, now version 25.0 and I look at what is really possible with the Generative AI features, specifically the Generative Fill function, and I will show you what is really possible with these new tools. I will also complete a sky replacement.
If you would like to follow along you can find the original RAW image here :- drive.google.com/drive/folder... all I ask is that if you choose to share your version of this image to please respect my copyright and give credit to myself @jamiermathlin for the original photograph, thank you.

Another great tutorial...…the only thing is, Adobe has rolled this out too soon for full version of Photoshop. Why you ask? Although the definition of the Generative fill has increased to 2000 x 2000 pixels, it's not enough resolution to give clean sharp detail in defined areas you are replacing.. Probably small images for web and small prints it will be ok, but, for cameras using 25 - 40 megapixels the fill areas won't give the required definition on larger prints. It is still in it's infancy and should be used sparingly..

The use of generative fill is very impressive. However, the final picture seems somewhat not natural. The source of light is byond the buildings but there is light on the front of the buildings and especially the stairs. The street near the buildings should be naturally darker than the part of the street far from the buildings.

You have a keen eye 😀 and you are very correct in your observations, the image is more about the demonstration of the tools now available with Photoshop 2024. If I were producing an image for a client or a commission, I would very much pay attention to such details 😀

I really enjoy your videos and have learned much. I would note with the implementation generative credits it will only take a handful of images to use up the monthly allowance. Perhaps using the remove tool would work as well in many instances (like on the pole) and save the credits?

You may well be right, such a shame that everything these days becomes too expensive to use. I think examples like I have shown you here will not be possible due to the cost. 😞

At the risk of sounding critical, it looks like the light source is behind the buildings. Did you cover this and I missed it? I always learn so much from your tutorials. I look forward to your reply. Thanks.
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin Ай бұрын
no worries about being critical, it helps me learn and consider different viewpoints. Getting the light direction in an edit is really important to maintain believability of the image, if the direction is not right, it can be off-putting to the viewer, your observation are fair 😀

Thinking about it I think it would be hard to do any live event as I’m usually shooting at ISO 1250 I really can’t think what could be done
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 10 ай бұрын
The first thing to consider is the Lightroom 'Denoise tool', this gives about 4-5 stops of noise improvement, so you could safely shoot up to ISO6400, giving you a little more headroom for higher shutter speeds 😀

looking at this video I would be well happy with the results because when I remove a car it doesn't remove the shadow under the car and yes me too have had the same problems as Tom, remove a car and get a lorry in its place lol, where the hel did that come from I have no lorries in my photo haha.. maybe you paid more I dont know...
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 10 ай бұрын
Hi Andrew, I have noticed that the latest version of Generative Fill is not as good as the earlier versions, and you have to try different ways of making the initial selections to get what you are hoping for. If it stops working too well and it becomes too expensive, then we may just have to live with the clone stamp tool and remove tool 😀
@TomTowles

Really cool tips and edits. I have been having issues with generative fill recently. I do quite a bit of real estate and architectural shoots and for a while I was having great sucess using it to remove cars from in front of listings. Lately, it has been replacing the cars with other cars. One time it kept replacing the car with a row of hedges (when there was really no plant life in the area at all). I dont give any prompts but now its more miss than hit. Do you find some images where it just wont eliminate the car, but replaces it with something else?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 10 ай бұрын
Hi Tom, yes I have also noticed with the more recent versions of Generative Fill that the removal process has become more hit-and-miss, you will note in this video I had to create a workaround to deal with the lamp post, I think the best version was 24.7 of the Beta, but like everything these days they get 'muck updated' 🙂. I find that changing how much 'overhang' of the selection I have makes a big difference. I hope that it get better not worse with time. Particularly, now it looks like we will be charged for its use with tokens from the start of Nov 23 😞
@erik1836
@erik1836 10 ай бұрын
Jamie, If the goal is to make the area selected as small as possible around the lamppost, for instance, why not use the magnetic lasso and then reduce the size of the pole by several pixels and then do generative fill know you definitely got it all?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 10 ай бұрын
Very good question Erik, the answer is that you can use the magnetic lasso, however, this is currently not available in the new Photoshop 2024, it is available in the Beta version, but also you still must not exceed the 1024-pixel limit in any one direction, otherwise you will see a reduction of the resolution, hence why I demonstrated the 'splitting' of the lamp post to remove it, hope that helps 😀

Deleting objects while preserving optimum resolution ... How can you tell if you have removed too big a chunk to have resulted in lower resolution? Zoom in to see pixelation?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 10 ай бұрын
yes indeed, if you have taken to much in one go, when you zoom into 300or 400% you will see the lower resolution 😀

how do you know the amount of 1024 you are picking
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 10 ай бұрын
This is the render resolution of the Generative Al application as stated by Adobe, 1024 x 1024 pixels, if you try to render a larger area than this, it interpolates the pixels (lowers the resolution), we are all hoping for a higher resolution in the near future 😀

@jamiermathlin

Photoshop used to have a lighting tool, which was really useful, however for some reason Adobe removed it, so I started using Lightroom instead, and ever since I have perfected the masking process in Lightroom, so I no longer do it in Photoshop. 😀

Love your work, but on this one the shadows from the trees are so out of normal that it is all I see. Maybe a sky with a sun to the right and higher would match. Wrong shadows ruin sky replacements. But love your day to night work.
