Eyedropper has always been "I". Check on your Mac. It's not a change. It goes back even before CS. I get what you are talking about though. Those are alternate functions of other tools like brush, gradient, etc. The project as a whole is too ambitious for the iPad the way they are doing it. They are using the original core code to port over instead of writing for the device. Which is why other apps work so well with the iPad. The iPad is not a MacBook or Mac workstation. They need to either match specs or keep the tablet a tablet. This is only going to anger consumers in the long run and cause a schism in the community as there are those that simply won't accept facts for facts and still think it's the greatest most powerful can do anything device.

Clip Studio Paint managed to port the full desktop software onto the iPad and it can be used with or without a keyboard. I don’t understand how Adobe can’t do the same or at least port the essential functionality over.

Honestly, I've been using PS for about 10 years, and in the last 5, Adobe's done nothing but systematically convince me to find other programs to use. Even after this much time, I'd rather learn an entirely new program than get shafted by Adobe anymore. I'm trying Clip Studio now, and I'm not really missing PS at all... (I am on PC though).

I'm in the same situation as you. Been trying out Clip Studio & Krita and so far I really like both. I've been using Krita mainly bc of it's stabilizer, compatibility with GMIC & plug-ins, & the brushes I got for it. Tbh I wanted something "lighter" than PS to do personal work at home. PS also has a lot of lag even when I'm using a gaming PC with monster specs that can run anything. I'm happy to use PS when I'm in studio but it doesn't make sense for me to pay for a personal license

But since I'm fairly comfortable using photoshop at this point, I'd rather have Krita as a my main secondary app since it is free, so I'm less likely to run into the "I no longer can use this program" issue. I make sure to finish a few big pieces with it to get a workflow in place.

That you can't select the Eyedropper with Alt/Opt on the keyboard is lame and hopefully they fix it, but you can trigger it when holding the onscreen modifier button and pulling out on it. It will be a damned if you do, damned if you don't for Adobe trying to balance a touch UI and what ppl are used to on the desktop. Don't think this first release was meant to appease artists (that’s why they released Fresco), but for basic compositing while they add features periodically because they made a promise to have it out “sometime this year", tho nowhere near what was promised.

I'm seeing the price in Japanese Yen in Tokyo which is 6,100 yen each (Approx $55 - $60 USD) for Mac OR Windows...and 2,440 JPY ($20-ish)for the iPad versions of Photo and Design. @knp015 жыл бұрын
Ok, yeah, but "I" was always an eyedropper shortcut. What you're looking for is Alt as a quick swap of tool. When you press I in PS it picks eyedropper and stays eyedropper too. Also- all real artist know not to touch your surface with a palm, it's called painter's grip for a reason.
@perpetuallin5 жыл бұрын
I can't find anything about the painter's grip online. How come you shouldn't rest your palm on the surface when drawing digitally or on paper?
@knp015 жыл бұрын
@@perpetuallin because that way you restrict movement of your elbow and arm joint on top of using way more brute force to draw a line than you would otherwise if you keep your palm up. It's something to get used to, but the hand is less stressed and it'w way less painful to have long sessions overall. Generally look up how painters always have loose grip at the end of paintbrush and only grip it closer to hair when doing slow details at the end. It has little to do with wet paint and a lot with ergonomy of you whole arm. On top of that you are able to draw longer and more stable lines when drawing from arm or elbow with unmoving wrist. It's literally first thing they teach in good art classes. how to grip tools properly.
@perpetuallin5 жыл бұрын
knejt01 I see. I get how that could be used when painting on a canvas or painting in general, but when drawing with a pen of some sort, as long as you aren't relaxing on your elbow but only gently with your palm, I feel like there shouldn't be much of a difference. Unless I'm completely off with all this.
@knp015 жыл бұрын
@@perpetuallin if doing tiny strokes- not much, but in doing long swipes and longer work- a lot. It relaxes whole arm and naturally stabilizes lines you draw. It's called "painter's grip", but I've learnt it while taking primarily pencil/ink lessons for technical drawings. It's actually great for charcoal or pencil, because it allows to quickly change from point to side without changing position of whole arm, just the wrist. It is different from normal writing grip and gets a lot of to get used to it, but the precision is much better and more comfortable in the long run.

Well, if you were really waiting for Photoshop then don’t worry - honestly between Procreate and Artstudio - you’re pretty set. This whole buildup to Photoshop isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. However - I’d definitely TRY out the iPad for drawing. It does not compare in terms of feel and fluidity to a desktop experience with any app, but for the same reasons that the companion didn’t - SIZE matters with drawing. It’s however excellent for ideation, sketching, planning, referencing etc.. Preparing a piece is great on a smaller device, but I definitely prefer the size for more serious work.

Between this app and Fresco (which... doesn't seem to hold a candle against ProCreate, especially for its essentially infinitly more expensive price tag), I don't know what's Adobe doing anymore. It might not be today, but with the constantly-evolving competitors (like the Affinity Suite on PC), I think they might just lose their monopoly in a few years. Changing the industry standards will take a really long time, if they do change, but it seems to me they're no longer "the best" in lots of areas, and that's why they used to be the standard at first, right? Just a few weeks ago, I had a need to get back into design for publishing; so I needed to renew my licence for inDesign. And compared to Affinity publisher, which was like a one time $50, I just didn't get *why* inDesign was so expensive in comparison. Thanksfully for them, they had *one* feature I absolutely couldn't do without (support for jp text, only available in the jp ver. of inDesign, not even the western inDesign, another one of my complaint but w/e), so I had to give in. BUT the more time goes on, the less I feel like Adobe deserves support. Again, Fresco and this iPad Photoshop both sound terrible, and terribly expensive, for what they are: less than their competitors.

Works well for me. I seldom have anything with any more than a few layers though. It’s anew app, and I suspect that there will be many, many updates to come as the engineers find all new ways to accomplish things in the iOS environment with its restrictions. I also find that using the iPad Pencil allows me to go much faster than using the keyboard or the mouse.

Adobe is consistently shooting themselves in the foot. I'm really liking my iPad/Macbook workflow, but Adobe just doesn't give me what I need. I gave up even trying, and paying. These tools work infinitely better for me, maybe some food for thought. My alternative recommendations: MAC Photoshop - Affinity Photo Illustrator - Affinity Designer Indesign - Affinity Publisher *These work flawlessly, especially while using sidecar with a Mac and iPad, OMG, butter. Premiere - Final Cut Pro X After Effects - Motion (I don't use often at all) Lightroom - Capture One *Still getting used to this one, but saving me money nonetheless. iPad Photoshop - Affinity Photo Illustrator - Affinity Designer Indesign - X (Waiting for Publisher?) Premiere - Lumafusion (Nothing serious/intensive on mobile anyways) After Effects - X (Don't really need it on iPad) Lightroom - Darkroom All these offer me top notch results, no client complaints, and I've saved over $300 already, and $70 every month here on out. Opinions or other suggestions?

I own all of the above and agree entirely with your list - have you tried Infinite Painter for the iPad? I just discovered it and I’m completely smitten - it’s incredible - only issue (which is surprisingly minor) is that you can’t yet load Psd files with layers intact - but it’s otherwise stellar all the way through (and 10$ Canadian)

I would really love to know what Adobe is thinking. It doesn't make sense for them to state boldly that a full version of Photoshop was coming to iPad. I said all along that it was unrealistic. But what was Adobe thinking? Now they've added more negativity on top of that caused by the release of Fresco.

Excellent video. I just tried it out a few days ago on my original iPad Pro and am disturbed by the lack of features on it. Even worse that some of the filters and FX were not even available for this version which shocked me. I actually have to think that both Apple and Adobe are to be blamed. Apple is at fault for proclaiming iPad Pro as a full fledged computer which must've add immense pressure on Adobe to get it out the door and to compete with Affinity. As an artist myself, I swear by CSP, Procreate, Concepts and a few others. However, Photoshop on the desktop is always reliable when I need it although I have plans to switch to the Affinity apps. It's a shame because the UI for Adobe Fresco was not that bad or Photoshop Sketch as well. I deleted Photoshop from my iPad yesterday because they have a lot of work to catch up on to make it better. If Belsky thinks that they can't do a full version of Photoshop and has to do it slowly by keeping things spartan by design, then this proves Apple's message of the iPad Pro as a desktop class machine doesn't work at all.

I am the FARTHEST thing from a professional, but I too was very disappointed with the release of this Photoshop. I Understand your frustration, when something should just work, it should just work. The double tap zoom on the Apple Pencil was driving me crazy, until I figured out that’s what was causing it. Of course I have to actively avoid double tapping. Palm rejection is not good, and the lack of a pen tool seems like an amateur problem, not an adobe problem. Just my opinion, from somebody who does very minor photo adjustments. Obviously, there are ways to work around some of it, and being an amateur, it is easier for me to do that. Still love Pixelmator, and the new Pixelmator photo that came out seems decent.

@PixiePrincess5015 жыл бұрын
That's disappointing. I was planning to get Creative Cloud to be able to use Photoshop and Fresco, since I need to learn the ropes for my studies, but this is a huge step back. The worst part is, Adobe now wants us to pay for subscription instead of a one-time pay for their programs, and this is just not worth it. I'll stick to Procreate for now. I do need to learn Photoshop, but I guess I'll wait till I have the money to get a new PC and learn it there. Thank you for the review, we really needed it. Just saved potential wasted time.
@frostreaper16075 жыл бұрын
Depends on you need to learn really. Is it just drawing ? Then you hardly need to 'learn' Photoshop and you'd be just as well off using other apps that have the same features now but do it better (Krita, Clip, Procreate, Art Studio ecetra) Or do you specifically need to learn its layout ? Then just learn it on the job, it takes like a day or something. For 2D artist, Adobe is a waste of money.
@Fightdemon5 жыл бұрын
You're totally right... Photoshop is a great great program, it never crashes and you never tend to have any kind of bizarre problem (try cubase... it's a pain!) but I've always had the feeling that Adobe is still thinking that photoshop is only for photography. It's 2019 and we hadn't a proper brush manager yet. My thoughts are that Adobe needs to change the way they perceive photoshop or another companies will own the market in the next 5 years

Thanks for your honest opinion and although you’re really embarrassed, I had a real good time watching your video. You’ve exacty expressed what the flaws are in PS for iPad. I’m not an illustrator but a photographer and first things first when I opened the app: Where’s Camera Raw? Okay, no chance for development of photos. Next, trying to make a selection, so where’s the Pen Tool? Ah, not implemented yet, only the damn lasso. Two must-have features for every photographer did’n make it into PS and Adobe has been developing the app for more than a year? That’s the joke of the century! Instantly solved the problem as you did: deleted the app and fired up Affinity Photo. Raw developer: integrated. Pen Tool: works perfectly since version 1 of their app launch.

the i keyboard shortcut isn't just in the app, they changed it for the default setup for Photoshop CC 2020...who tf is using i for color picker???
@AdamDuffArt5 жыл бұрын
Really! Well I didn’t get a chance to test out 2020 in depth, because the brushes are broken due to that stupid recurring “windows ink” bug. You either have a loading ring when you press and hold the pen and alt (which messes up with colour picking) OR when you disable windows ink, it disables the pen sensitivity entirely. So just like last year, I resorted back to the 2018 version and everything works fine. However, in Photoshop desktop, you should be able to change the colour picker back to alt so it’s not the end of the world.
