I got Infinite Painter based off your videos and I love it. Procreate is great, but I agree, it's all about the brushes. Procreate's brushes are cumbersome in comparison and still don't give the natural or painterly feeling Infinite Painter's does. It feels like Procreate is aiming to be like Photoshop with it's brushes, which is a shame, because Photoshop's brushes have NEVER been great. OpenCanvas 1.1, a free paint program, about 20 years old, the whole program less than half a megabyte in size: still beats today's Photoshop brushes in terms of smoothness and color blending abilities.

I feel so far in the other direction imo. I mean one of the lead concept artists on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Nicholas Kole) did all his work on ipad in procreate, so it can absolutely be used for modern professional work. I have photoshop on PC, and I've used many different apps on pc and ipad but I've yet to find a single piece of software as intuitive as procreate, with yes, a few control settings adjusted for preference. It's sped my workflow up tremendously; and the updates it's gotten since its launch have improved it greatly. I think Infinite painter has a better brush engine, but I prefer procreate in all other things (especially controls, I HATE IP's controls).

I had the bamboo touch and pen tablet, hated it so weird looking up while drawing. Got the xp pen drawing tablet draws on screen. SOOOO much better. Photoshop on this is so wonderful. Digital work to ME is so much better, crisp, high detail quality. Can print them out multiple times for people for gifts or for sale. Definitely the way to go man. Just remember, if it's for print ALWAYS put the DPI to 300 Better to draw on a large 3000 x 3000 DPI 300 and then scale DOWN to a smaller canvas. If you scale up, it gets pixelated and blurry. Good luck to you man you'll do great in digital artwork.

@@AdamDuffArt Disagree with the Blizzard statement. WoW expansions are broken, glitched and rushed to market because they're on a 2-year cycle. SC2 Legacy of the void was so rushed they didn't realize how broken some units were, and then there is Diablo 3. Trace Blizz launches since Activision and they're all rushed and not finished products that require a tonne of patches to fix and make playable.

I'm also coming from Photoshop and found Artstudio Pro a much better experience. The brush import works great and the brushes can be used pretty much straight away. The whole menu system isn't the quickest, but at least you know where to look when you need something. I agree, the color picker should be dockable. Some people also want a Warp tool, which I admit would be nice. Although the Liquify tool works very well in Artstudio Pro as well. I love the option to change the brush size and flow by just moving the thumb (wish the direction would be switched though, so that up/down changes the size). But all that aside. Prefer Artstudio as well. Too bad they haven't got as big a community as Procreate.

I’m surprised you find Procreate so frustrating. I’ve been using it since it was launched on the OG iPad in 2010 or something. So I’ve kind of grown with the app. I buy all the apps like you do, and think there are a lot of great ones. You can practically buy all of them for less of the price than an Apple Pencil. I kind of agree with you on Affinity photo, but Affinity designer is what you need. You can do a full raster painting drawing, or start raster and go vector. I would give a special mention to Zenbrush 2 on the iPhone. I sketch on that when I commute to a job, and it’s a lot of fun. Especially with 3D Touch, which my 11 pro doesn’t have :(

Thanks for giving us your informed opinion on these apps. I wonder which apps and programs (any platform) would be best suited for the following art styles. I have some ideas but I don't know everything that's out there. That might be a helpful video for many people, for you or someone to do. Maybe it should be a collaborative video since each artist has their own experience....? 1. Manga; black and white (I'm guessing Clip Studio) 2. Comic book line work (probably Clip Studio also?) 3. Comic book coloring 4. Bob Ross style painting 5. John Singer Sargent style painting 6. Stanley Lau (ArtGerm) style digital painting 7. Digital Pencil and charcoal portraits and drawing 8. Rembrandt and other classical painters; Vermeer, Eugene Delacroix, etc. 9. Wildlife painting; realistic like Daniel Smith, Carl Brenders, et. al 10. Categories; concept art, impressionism, abstract, watercolors like James Gurney,.... etc. Let me add that, there's a professional artist, Tom Bjorkland, who does real, pro work for scientific endeavors, specifically ancient man and he uses a limited palette in the $50 (at the time I asked him a couple or so years ago) Art Rage program. And it looks fantastic. So, I suppose that a person just needs to decide what type of art they want to do and find those who are already doing that and find out what program they use but I still would like to see a list since I like to dabble in different types of art. thanks a bunch for any consideration of this suggestion. :)

If I could combine the intuitiveness and transparency of Procreate, with the brushes in Infinity, and add workable vector, without the Adobe tax, then that would be ideal. I think that I’m clutching at straws here, but that’s where we are. Maybe Apple could build a creative hub, where all these apps are accessible from, so you aren’t moving things from app to app. There is a writing app called Drafts, where you can do a lot of processing and editing, etc, for writing, and perhaps something like this for visual arts would be ideal.

Thanks for this vid as well, loved the deeper dive into Infinity Painter recently, which is one I picked up ages ago and set aside because Procreate was (and still is) my main drawing app and with the 5th iteration, more or less all I need with the brush arsenal I've amassed. But Infinity painter has some -really- nice features that serve some really important Quallity of Life functions in a drawing app. Things like a pen tool, extensive warp options, etc etc. Procreate is writing the book on how to approach minimalism in a fully touch interface overall I think but, they're slow to release tools (which I understand sits well with the long time users and adheres to their arguably intuitive design philosophy and approach - cant beat that really easy to talk to support team too) Paint Storm Pro, yeah, it's a yikes when you first open that thing. I could never get the lower left hand buttons to disappear when toggled, and scaling the UI elements made them jump to odd places etc etc, seemed more of a hassle than anything else. Thanks for these vids, also enjoying the artbook reviews!

Really surprised Clip Studio Paint is not on here. Six month free trial if you haven't tried it yet. More expensive, yes but it blows all these apps out of the water, in my opinion. You talk about an app being customizable, you will not find an app that is more customizable than this, probably ever, seriously. Check Daub Brushes for Clip Studio, well worth the investment. I could go and on, but as I said 6 month free trial, KZbin Clip Studio Ipad Customize to customize the UI how you want. Some tips from me, you can create your own tool groups, duplicate them first just incase, and put them in a new group, customize the settings, save as default. Every single tool you want to do this with, you can do it to. You want a certain font, size, edge to be default, done, move tool that duplicates, done, symmetry 2x 3x 4x done, etc. The command bar at the top is equally customizable. When you make a selection, which I do constantly, even that bar is customizable, allowing you to add to it. Theres a sub view feature that takes pictures you have saved, including your own work, and shows it when you click on it, allowing you to COLOR PICK from it! Ive set up a bunch of different color palettes from the net, saved them in a single file, or create your own, zoom in, out etc. I'm quite OCD, so I've really customized the UI, even changing the icons for the tools, brushes etc that i use, to these grungy looking icons, it looks sweet. All that being said, I really do miss Photoshop's layer styles, and I do prefer Procreates liquify over CSP, even though that is mostly for making really random looking "abstract" art. I know this was long, but dude, once you know how to use this app, it'll be well worth the read lol, goodluck.

Scrobin Ja Clip Studio might be good but I will never, ever pay a subscription to use an app. What if they decide to remove the service or raise the price? An app is like an instrument, you invest time learning how to use it, why would you put it in someone else’s control as to whether you can use it or not? It would also have to be sooooo much better when Infinite Painter, Procreate, Art Studio, Affinity are £10 and Clip Studio is £20-£56 PER YEAR! Just no.

I tried all these apps, and though I like Procreate, Artstudio Pro & Infinite Painter for illustration, I mostly end up in Clip Studio Paint, which is my favorite because it complete, even if it takes some getting used to. I especially don't like the very restrictive UI of most of the apps I mentioned, especially procreate. Having to click to open a menu, select a brush, tap next to it to close, open a menu, pick a color, close again ad infinitum... It really breaks the flow. Clip Studio UI is so flexible so I can set up the app exactly as I want it. I hope you will review it once.

Idk man for me it doesn’t get more complicated than PS. You should give Clip Studio a try. They have a 6 month free trial.

I agree with you on procreate - i try to like it, but just can't get myself to like the brushes. My personal favorite (i have all that you mentioned) is clip studio paint - nothing else feels right to me, and it's incredibly powerful and extremely stable (3 ft by 2 ft painting at 300 DPI on an ipad with many layers? Yes in CSP - completed commissions with it).

Dockable Color wheel? Really? How? I know how dock colours on Android, but on iPad I can not find that feature. What I do not like in Infinite Painter is lack of Autosave. Also there is lagging and distortion when working with brushes on large resolution files. In Procreate on every possible resolution brushes are working smoothly. For me Procreate interface is more natural and handy than Infinite Painter.

I work exclusively in Procreate and I completely agree regarding the complexity of the brush engine, especially in version 5. I'm sure you're already aware but Max Ulichney is the gold standard for Procreate brushes and I would highly recommend giving them a go for some nice, premade brushes so you never have to attempt to make a Procreate brush yourself.

Affinity Photo isn’t the most expensive since it’s a one-time purchase. Not that it’s the best or anything, but $20 and you’re done. Photoshop is an ongoing subscription like Clip Studio.

i don't like procreate too. because of that streamline brush feature.

My biggest gripe of them all is the canvas size. Is there one app that allows a canvas of 24x36 with a DPI of 300? Wait...with unlimited layers. What if I wanted to design a subway poster (40x60)? In order to compete 100% with desktops programs, that is the proverbial elephant in the room.

I hate procreate for not providing custom key shortcuts and a mode where theres no limit on layers I don’t mind a bit of lag , but have to give it to the ui designer, its an perfect example of apple mindset
@sanakiyamam19873 жыл бұрын
what i don't like about Procreate is some things are way too complicated. you have to do it very simple for designers because time is also important for a designer. for example i draw something and want to pick it up and change the position or multiply it with the other drawing on the screen you have have to choose a menu than go to the other menu and than swipe with the fingers and choose again. mannn sooo many steps it's annoyiny. why can't i just hold and tip with my apple pencil 2nd generation on drawing and just slide it where ever i want to move the drawing and that's it. i thing affinity designer is like that. i have seen tuturial videos and how you use it looks alittle bit better for me. Like Picsart maybe you know Picsart you don't have to open so many manues. i will also install affinity designer for the next step and than maybe other designer apps.

Affinity Photo & Designer are my favorites, but Procreate & Infinite Painter are a close 2nd because they’re so simple. The rest aren’t user friendly to me.

Kinda agree with you about procreate, never quite gotten to a comfortable brush. The new update improves it a bit but it's still not like Photoshop. Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it. About Artstudio, it works better but the color swatches on the right is really uncomfortable, sometimes my palm hits them. I wish you could turn it off. Another problem with a lot of these apps is that many options are all over the interface, for example when making a selection, the options are way on the bottom.
@AdamDuffArt5 жыл бұрын
I can definitely empathize with your annoyance with the colour swatches in Artstudio - one thing that might help is to flip the UI into left or right handed mode - that flips everything to the opposite side. (that's what I had to do)
@EyalDegabli5 жыл бұрын
@@AdamDuffArt Thanks, I'll try it, though it might make the other buttons less convenient. I've sent them an email about it, let's hope they'll add this feature :)

EyalDegabli Have you tried working with Click the Right side top menu “Square “ icon to flip the Color swatch off almost full screen mode,and then pick it on the Left side menu ,I use drag finger for resizing Brush.

@@scp_art Yeah I've noticed this feature, I'll check it out, I need to see if it hides too many options being fullscreen. Thanks! :)
