Matt, these videos are gold! There are so many videos out there that are so confusing. I think simply from the fact that a lot of people can't explain the process very well even though they may be good at it. Just wanted to thank you and keep up the awesome work. I was wondering where that defringe button went lol

One thing you might notice (if you are sharp eyed), is in the photo of the banjo player. Even though you said that only the monitor screen was selected, in fact the Apple logo just below the screen was selected as well.

Matt so how about example with soft lines (I know we need contrast but sometimes it just isnt there) or extremely busy stuff like tree branches? And, thanks. I've been watching and reading you for years and learned sooo much
@MattKloskowski6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jody - Thanks for the kind words :-) Soft lines won't produce selections unfortunately. Soft doesn't translate to a selection edge for the most part, and there's no tool out there that'll do that. In order to have a selection you need an edge and contrast. As for tree branches and things, those don't sound like "subjects" to me - honestly it sounds like you know the type of photo you're looking for so give it a try. Select Subject doesn't have any settings. It's a one-click button so you'll know pretty quickly if it selected what you wanted or not. But just remember, it's only a starting place. Good luck!

This was really helpful. I use PS 2018.Re: the girl in the turq jacket. I followed all the steps up to drag and drop onto another file (Like the girl in the turq jacket) I dragged the image off and up to the file but it won't drop on it. I haven't been able to figure out why. It worked so easily and quickly for you in your video...Sigh!
@cynthiawolf1886 жыл бұрын
and I did output the image to a new layer mask. all worked fine. Then my image wouldn't drop...I could drag it up, it just didn't appear on the new file.

I still fine the old refine mask works best. Was just playing with a few images and best results were with the old method over all. What do you think?
@MattKloskowski7 жыл бұрын
carey riddell Hi. The Refine tools are where you go after you’ve made the base selection. I demo it halfway through this video. Select Subject really will never get you a complex selection. It’s just there to help get started faster.

That 3rd photo was indeed really hard for AI. check quick mask (press Q). You see it actually selected more that the display border. It also did the small bear and some other parts. But with Quick Mask you can paint these out super fast.

This new tool Select Subject does not work well on complicated images like a city skyline with tall building against a bright cloudless sky. More development from Adobe required here.
