Hmm. Field blur is greyed out for me. Edit: turns out, if the layer isn't a Smart Object, Field blur shows up. Yes, I'm using CS6.

Well, creating a gradient over the layer mask should do it. 99% of the time, problems like this are due to one minor user error, however, one would have to inspect your file to find which one it is. The gradient layer mask is essentially masking out the bright areas of the light, thereby revealing the layer under that has no light. Think of layer masks as stencils - white reveals the layer next to it, while black conceals it.
