I've been working with Photoshop since the last year and I must say that thanks to this video, you changed my vision from "Sh*t, I have to select trees again!" to "I cannot wait to select trees again to apply this method". That part when you use gaussian blur to get rid of the defined color in the background is really clever and just blew my mind. Kudos for this!

The main question is how to replace a "no color sky" or gray sky, and make a tree or other objects look natural after applying a mask. It is quite different from this tutorial, where one blue sky is replaced with another blue sky or sunset sky. The subject was left without a complete answer. It is easy to replace one "blue" with another "blue".

@shailynn51955 жыл бұрын
You can also accomplish the same effect using a color overlay effect (set to screen) taking a sample off the mid tone blue color that was cutout, then add the gradient set to screen as well. Add the curves adjustment layer to match the light and dark. I found this works just as effective as the process you explained. Great videos! you have taught me a lot over the last year! Thanks!

super tuto. why didn't you put sky on top of tree and use multiply on sky ? perhaps blendif under and protect shadows near white level would have helped too ? sometimes a 5000px size big brush 1 clic on mask helps a lot on branches to feather the mask and hide halos.
@emmaeklund90672 жыл бұрын
Between 4-5 minutes in, why do you do the masking in 2 separate times and not take the color eyedropper tool plus for both the blue sky up high and the whiter sky down low, and select the whole area? What am I missing? What gap do I have in my Photoshop knowledge, or can one do it all in one step? Thank you for a fantastic tut as always!

The problem of fringing occurs because of the wave properties of light and the diffraction that happens when light bends around edges. If light photons behaved only as particles, shadows would be hard and there would be no fringing, but photons also behave as waves and waves bend around solid objects, like branches of a tree. Any efforts to remove these fringes actually shrinks the size of the object, as can be seen in this tutorial when the fuzziness is increased. In scientific applications, such as astronomy, complex mathematical algorithms are used to reconstruct the object “underneath” the diffraction. Diffraction limits the resolving power of magnification of microscopes, telescopes, and very long telephoto lenses. In the end, there is no free lunch.
@fragiquerence2 жыл бұрын
"wave properties of the light". More like ambient occlusion. The light outside is pretty much all reflected, this is why objects are usually lit from all sides.

I appreciate the techniques in this tutorial, but you're not showing removal of fringes as much as you're showing how to disguise or hide them. If you're not trying to match to a specific photo plate and want to create reusable assets that can be dropped into any scene, these two techniques don't help at all. Actual removal requires a totally different process after utilizing Select Color Range and obtaining a mask.
