013 - Free Energy Capture and Storage
Paul Andersen details the processes of photosynthesis and respiration in this video on free energy capture and storage. Autotrophs use the light reactions and the Calvin cycle to convert energy from the Sun into sugars. Autotrophs and heterotrophs use cellular respiration to convert this sugar into ATP. Both chemosynthesis and fermentation are discussed. The evolution of photosynthesis is also discussed.

That was incredibly helpful! We study the processes in so much detail in class that I can't understand the basic thing. We're expected to memorize the names of all the different kinds of molecules (including the proteins) involved in the steps of photosynthesis and respiration, so that sucks out all our interest. This gave me a clearer picture! Thank you! :)

9:40 Convention suggests the energy from the light is stored in ATP and NADPH but the bulk of the light energy is used to break the strong H-O-H and O=C=O bonds and replace them with the weak O=O bonds. It is the rejected oxygen that actually 'stores' most of the energy from the light.

11:42 remember that it is the oxygen, not the glucose that 'stores' the energy. Glucose is a strongly bonded stable molecule - it is oxygen that is the unstable reactive one. But you won't find this in text books, YET. But there is a group of us who are trying to make the role of oxygen clearer. After all it is the oxygen, rejoining the carbon in fossil fuels that has filled our atmosphere with carbon dioxide and causing climate change.
