Photosynthesis can be a hard topic to demonstrate in the classroom, especially in winter. Join superstar science teacher, Alom Shaha, as he talks us through a range of experiments and protocals for investigating photosynthesis and respiration using algal balls.
This fun and reliable practical makes investigating photosynthesis easy, with a technique that can be used with students from KS3 through to GCSE and post-16 / A-Level biology, and offering quantifiable and replicable results.

IB students watching this cus you missed an ISC lesson. I shall give you the answers my child. Materials - Algae enrichment medium - Algae - Water - Volumetric flask - Bright light - Air pump - Stirrer - Beaker - Sodium alginate - Distilled water - Syringe - Calcium chloride Methods - Place Algae and Algae enrichment medium in a volumetric flask filled with water - Swirl for a couple of seconds - Leave be with a bright light shining directly at the flask - Simultaneously pump air into the solution while the light is on - Leave exactly like this for 3 weeks - After 3 weeks, turn off the air pump and let settle for an hour - The alginate must be made the day before. - Place a beaker filled with distilled water on a stirrer and add the sodium alginate - Leave overnight to dissolve - To make algal ball, equal quantities of both algae and alginate are mixed then dripped through a syringe into a mixture of calcium chloride - Separate the solution and the algal balls by placing a sieve over a beaker and pouring the mixture through. Rinse the algal ball once more with distilled water. Explain the photosynthesis experiment conducted in the video: - What is the independent variable of the investigation? The algal balls - What is the dependent variable? The amount of pH that changes in each vial - Name three controlled variables. The light concentration The distance between each vial of algal balls The time given for each tube to photosynthesize - What is the hypothesis of the experiment? The vials closest to the light should photosynthesis faster, this is indicated by the indicator used in the vials. The more purple/blue the indicator, the higher the pH - Briefly summarize the results of the investigation. Explain the results with biological theory. - The vials closest to the compact fluorescent light source, the higher the pH value the indicator shows. This concludes the investigation and shows that the more exposed the algal balls are to a light source the faster they will photosynthesize. These probably aren't correct but at least i tried to help. GL bros

Hello, this video inspired me to do an experiment on algae photosynthesis. I would like to follow the method mentioned in the video however I couldn't find the content of the algae enrichment medium. When I search for algae growth medium different recipes with way more reagents come up. What is in the algae enrichment medium that is used in 02.30?
