One of these days, equipment permitting, you should do a generational comparison. A "How did they age?" type series. Like the Mighty 4k vs the 14k. The Mars 1 vs Mars 4, etc. Dial them in to the best of your abilities, and compare the prints, while also comparing their differing quality of life features. I think it would serve to highlight how far the industry has or has not progressed.

4:45 "there are some people that put prints directly on the base plate expecting dimensional accuracy, even though the base layers will be over cured and bloated anyway... I just don't get why" I do a fair amount of direct printing. I use very long base wait times, applied with UV tools allowing base layers to actually get to the right height which then allows for far lower base exposures, with most resins I can do 2-3x normal exposure on just 2 base layers for almost no warping or elephants foot, I can even print complex things like fine chain mail directly, even on my old saturn 1! And it's super useful for just making parts and printing them like you would with FDM rather than worrying about print angles and supports

I preordered the REVO and just wanted to comment on my findings, there is a switch in the options menu that will keep the printer heater running throughout the print. I confirmed with Phrozen support that this was the case and they told me it was. (this seems to be an update pushed after the first review copies shipped) My observations of my own printer chamber temp so far with this setting on have confirmed it as well. you can also turn off the setting for residue detection if you feel its flagging you a false positive and it will print just fine.... you make good reviews keep it up, just wanted to raise these points from my own findings with the printer so far.

I think what upsets me by reading this. Is that I was on the phone with phrozen 2 weeks ago and I was told none of this. I’d still say the resin detection is useless, so a pointless feature. I’d probably also say that whilst you can keep the heater on. It looses heat through the gaps. I need to test these in cold environments to be sure. But unfortunately. It is now summer… But if they’d told me these features were coming and could be changed. I’d have amended my review to reflect the improvement and would have praised them for showing a huge improvement regarding responsive firmware updates. Something they are not known for typically!

Plus, you help break it down to the average person as well keeping it fun and entertaining with your sense of humor and sketches. Hey Ross, Generally speaking I love your videos. I love how you promote resin 3D printing and tell us (the audience) what's out there and what's available. Seriously: thank you for that. I really appreciate it. There is one point of criticism that I have though. You tend to go on a rant about how bad ACF film is. You say it obscures fine details on modern high detail printers, but you also say (sometimes in the *same* video) that modern 14k and 12k printers are not much better that the older 8k printers (24 micron vs 28.5 micron) because you can't see those details anyway (especially when you prime the model for painting). There is one thing about ACF film that maybe you've never realised, or at least you've never mentioned: ACF improves reliability of prints!!! Because ACF lowers peel forces, the chances of a failed print drop significantly. Now if you know what you're doing (which I assume you do) or if you just increase your exposure a little to guarantee print success (negating the ACF detail argument), the odds of a print failure won't be much of an issue for you. However for those of us who print from widely varying sources, with varying pre-support quality, having a liner which gives me a higher chance of a successful print anyway is priceless. (I don't increase the printing speed, I want more reliable prints) I have an Anycubic Photon D2 and use anti-aliasing, and I have now installed ACF with fantastic results. I have had only one print failure across many different prints using different resins and STLs from different sources. Now I do realise that with DLP the detail blur effect of ACF is mitigated, but if you use anti-aliasing you will have the same effect as ACF on your prints anyway. So it makes little to no difference. This increase in reliability has been so profound that I now recommend that *everyone* who does not have a tilting vat resin printer, as least consider installing ACF as their default. Not having to worry about print failures is IMO so much more important that the finest details you can only see using a magnifying glass. Cheers and happy printing.

I need a heating solution but also want the no-leveling / vat tilting features. Is there anything with all of those features combined?
@FauxHammer
@FauxHammer 6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much. I just font get the value if having a sharp printer to then reduce the quality of that sharpness with ACf. If you see the benefit sure. But if using it. Why buy a super sharp expensive printer and reduce quality… just buy an old 2k printer and get the best of both worlds. But I don’t mention it because I’m not now doing videos on old printers. Appreciate the comment though, you aren’t wrong. I also see the benefit of it in big printers roo

About the heater and potential issues (I got a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and got into thermal stuff for my Master’s at one point, but I’m yet to get a 3D printer so I’m very much looking at this as an outsider getting ready for their first printer even though I have some technical know-how): You are right that these are potential issues. Here’s the catch: how drastically does this affect the final product? I believe your experience, believe me, but I need some numbers about the thermal performance, and I’m gonna ask some questions that seem dumb but if answered can help explain why Phrozen went with this solution instead of more direct heating solutions. How big a temp difference is the top of the enclosure vs. by the resin vat? Are there fans circulating air inside the enclosure, aside from the extractor area? Does the heater click on if a temperature sensor detects a drop in temperature below a certain point? Where’s the sensor location, if it has one? If it doesn’t have an sensor, some engineer probably did some thermal calculations and figured out “It should on average cool X degrees in Y minutes, so heater should click back on at Z minute intervals to maintain temperature.” Yes, as long as the data used to calculate this result is accurate, an engineer can figure out something that esoteric. Some thoughts running through my head that can be checked/verified/explained by you if you know the answers to these: Yeah that seems like a hefty difference in temperature between the top and bottom, but you have to check the numbers. Is it a 2 degree difference, a 15 degree difference, etc.? The colors of the thermal camera alone are not enough, you have to check the legend of what temps are associated with which color, then see the difference in temps between the vat and the top of the enclosure. If it’s only a 2-3 degree C difference in temperature, as long as the resin is within 2-3 degrees of the target temperature things should work out. While I understand feeling sketch about it, in your experience can resin easily handle a difference of 2-3 degrees C from your desired temperature set point without significant changes in its desired material properties, I.e. is the temp change enough to screw with the final product noticeably? Naturally if the temperature difference is WAY bigger, then of course this is a more serious issue to address. Also, does the manuals explicitly call this a pre-heater? Do the instructions say if the heater ever clicks on after a bit to maintain temperatures where you want to set them? Have you seen it clicking back on after it cools a little? If it does click on again, then that would solve the concerns about the unit cooling off: the heater would click back on to reheat the air to get the vat to the desired temperature. Honestly the biggest heat loss would be through the gaps you mentioned and the exhaust port, but it depends on how much air leaks out those gaps vs. how long the vat needs to stay at your desired temperature. And the extractor hose port placement would be a bigger deal if the heater was running constantly. When the heater isn’t running, the extractor fan would pull from the cooler air in the bottom of the enclosure, encouraging the hot air to come down mechanically and circulate above the resin (and transfer its heat), if only by a small amount. Honestly, Phrozen probably don’t run the heater constantly because that burns continuous energy just to get air to X temperature, which doesn’t look good when trying to determine environmental impact of thousands of 3D printers across the country running at once. It might be a difference of only a few continuous watts of electricity vs. a quick burst of 30 watts for only a few minutes at a time, but it adds up over time and over thousands of units in residential homes. If you keep an air heater running all the time, you’re gonna hit a point where you’re just wasting energy keeping the darn thing on. Big bonus to the air heater though: the tech is extremely well understood and dirt cheap to implement accurately, probably way cheaper than a direct conduction vat heater. Vat heaters have to be in contact with the vat, and continuously running, in order to be effective, I assume, unless the vat heater is like the Uniformation GKTwo where there’s an air chamber underneath that heats the vat like an electric range lol. Either way, it might be more expensive in the long run to have a direct vat heater mod as it would be on more often for longer periods of time, and the heat has to penetrate the vat walls before it can heat the resin. Given enough time I’m sure they are both effective, but the more material is between the resin and the heater the less efficient that heater would become. Perhaps Phrozen had an intern do some heat transfer calc comparisons and found the heat transfer from hot air to resin was more effective than heat transfer from direct vat heater to vat wall to resin, and that’s why they did things this way? Won’t know unless they speak up about it! As always, direct experience is meant to validate the theory and maths. I appreciate it for reading through my engineering nerd-out, and I defer to your direct experience over my armchair conjecture! Cheers mate, your channel has been very helpful!

I’ve owned the mini 8k and the mini 8ks but I have been soured on the brand from the experience. The 8k died prematurely from a dead USB port. The 8ks has too many resin compatibility issues so I switched to the Mars 4 Ultra. The Phrozen light source delivers subpar performance with some non Phrozen resins. I had weird issues with weak and crumbly prints with resins that print perfectly on other machines. I also question whether anyone who understands 3d printing is involved with the design of these machines or if their marketing teams just slap together popular features from other brands without understanding why those features are desirable.

Another great video. I hope you don't see too much push back. I am a Phrozen fan since the original sonic mini (2k, old school) and I had a lot of the same criticisms when the Revo was about to launch. the 14k is just to stay 'competitive' with the market and nothing more. It kinda felt like they wanted to tick all the 'wanted' boxes but bolted them on instead of building them in, if that makes sense. In the end they made a machine that had more features than last gen but wasn't any /smarter/ than last gen, which is what I'm starting to look for in new machines. Maybe it is just the cheap part of me but I would have much rather seen them release a Might 8K S machine this year and put out a smarter more innovative mid sized machine next year. Thanks again for the video, very informative as always!

Later a friend of mine who is a jeweler called me and we talked about this printer for 2 hours. After our conversation I was speechless and your review was the "nail in the coffin". I bought the MARS 5 Ultra for $300. I immediately thought that all these ill-considered additions to the Revo were an act of hysteria towards cheap Chinese printers, whose build quality blew me away.

As someone with a budding interest in resin 3D printing (GW left me behind with price increases in the middle of a recession) I watched some content and believed that the newer forays into printers with elegoo for example were trying to raise their reputation and the quality of the 3D printing space with growth such as the tilting vat. I would love a video comparing brands at different price points because most other reviews seem to be mostly positive for every printer and maybe that means there isn't much of a difference other than price? I struggled this past winter getting prints to succeed with a GK2 in a garage, and I can tell you that having ambient temps inside the enclosure be too high or fluctuate (since the heater turns on and off) means the print and the build plate will change shape at different rates, which will cause heavy prints to detach and fall into your vat. I think this is probably the most destructive and catastrophic failure you can have in terms of damage to your vat, screen, and release membrane barring some homer simpson bullshit

just an FYI, you can turn off all the smart features, so even if the smart detection feature doesn't work well or is too sensitive, you can turn it off so it doesn't give you issues until they maybe find a software fix for it. I agree it should just work properly from the get-go, but I feel like in a review this should be mentioned instead of making it seem like you can't get around this issue.

Led lights will cure resin over time, this is more of a problem if you have residue, it will make Hader to clean off the vat and splashes, using a LED that doesn't do this is basically a dim red LED so it's not optimal. As for chamber heaters, its better if the heater has a fan only mode if the tempatures are above normal so it circulates the air around the chamber to make it more even.

@FauxHammer alternative resin cleaning. Unrelated comment but wanted to mention the option in case you or someone else benefits from this. For washing resins propylene glycol is amazing. Results similar to IPA, wayyyy less toxic as a washing medium, it doesn't even release much resin chemicals, it's non flammable and it even lasts longer than IPA. How to use PPG? Instead of a wash station use an ultrasonic cleaner and when the fluid is dirty you get it cold around - 2 Celsius (freezer or outside weather permitting) and the resin separates out of the fluid and you can separate it easily. Last caveat I have heard it doesn't work well with sunlu resins. Hope that helps someone!

As a consumer (and fan) I find reviews that are fan boys telling me I'm a moron for not loving "xxx" printer useless. To me showing me why something isn't desirable is more valuable than people that keep going "14k! Best printz ever!". If you say something sucks...not helpful either but something like this video in your format is perfect. "It does or does not have this, and that effects this"...that's what I want from reviews. Thank you for this.

Great review: honest, constructive and entertaining. You don’t happen to have a video about printing at different layer heights or a practical guide on how to achieve the best detail / model accuracy for larger prints. Print orientation, supports, layer heights that sort of thing. I am struggling with printing a tank in two parts without corners lifting or surfaces warping. Straight flat surfaces are looking wavy :(

Good review, I do not own this printer, but do own the markedly worse, but significantly less expensive anycubic m5s pro. I have owned it for 2 weeks now. I knew going in I wasn't going to see 14k but as I was upgrading from my original mono 2k printer I expected a step up in quality. I also enjoy the larger print area. I think the anycubic printer with its scab on double side tape heater has a slight advantage over the Phrozen one in that it runs the whole time, as I run my printer in the garage in an area that can sometimes drop into negative temps that is appreciated because it just keeps the air warm inside, however it is not ideal, it should be in integrated part of the printer. I still heat my resin before I print using an external heater then let the temp controlled air and printer running take care of the rest. Also I am not a fan of whomever decided to go with rectangular pixel shape. Generally though as someone who is just printing dnd minis it is more than enough for what I need. Eventually it would be nice if any of the big 3 got their act together enough to create something seamlessly engineered.

I had m3 premuim that i loved and worked great they i parted ways with cus i did not want to have to deal with no screen replacements being available. I saw this previewed and was going to go with this but then saw the 1k price tag and thought nope and this review makes me glad i did. i bought the m5 pro and had so many issued with it in first week i just returned it. So I have a question, if Anycubic and Phrozen made price and design choices that are easy for the ELEGOO to trump with the Sat 4,then have those other companies always been trying to shovel in money by overpricing printers or did ELEGOO take a bit of a loss on the Sat 4? Seems crazy that ELEGOO hit the golden price point vs features and everyone else missed the target.

Maybe Elagoo front the money they made from the Neptune series and used it to fund the Saturn 4 at a cheaper price point. But it's crazy that the 4 Ultra has almost MORE features for less money, as long as a heater isn't a concern, and from the video Frozens heater isn't exactly great
@Venturestien

@@doombringer4519 I like this theory. If the strategy is to be the leader in the market this would be a good strategy. if the next Saturn is the leader again at a competitive price my mind is going to be blown. Lol. Honestly, I think, and this is just a guess, Elegoo have so much revenue share from the incredible performance of their last 2 generations, that they have bought so much product in bulk, that they can afford to do it at this price. But I think they undercut themselves this time around. They could have easily charged $100 more if not $150
@Venturestien
@Venturestien 6 ай бұрын
@@FauxHammer that’s kinda what I’m thinking too. I feel like they took a loss, maybe not in profit but profit at a lower bracket. Their next gen may try and compete with the GKtwo, if they do I feel like that’s good for consumers :). Actually let’s hope all the other brands follow these upgrade features as screen res may be maxed out and they can market better screens anymore at that price point. Just my thoughts.

what im curious about is where the printer is taking its temp reading from? did phrozen put in additional temp probs or is it just taking a temp from the pcb and the processor. does that make much sense? (ideally you would want a temp reading from the vat right?)
@FauxHammer
@FauxHammer 6 ай бұрын
@@TheChadwokieyeah that makes sense, and I have no idea where the temp probe is located. But I tested my thermal can with objects using other if temp readers and turning things like my heating on along with fdm printer bed temps to see if it is accurate, imo it was close enough that this is telling. But you can still see the temperature “difference” and that more heat is towards the top of the machine That told me enough

I also appreciate the honesty, like the other viewers. Makes me actually reconsider getting it, since i need a reliable heating solution for my new living situation. You know, I'm sure there are many resin printer enthusiasts who live close to the equator. The rest of us, however, live in places where the weather changes. I print more in the winter because I have much more time for my hobby during the winter doldrums in Wisconsin. For me, heating the chamber is useless, and a heater that shuts off during the printing is less than useless. So, I need to add a fermentation belt and either run the printer with the top off, or cut a hole in the cover, which is totally pointless when I’m expected to pay extra for the snazzy flip top. This would have been a great printer when I was a noob. But, you know what? I could never have afforded this printer as a noob, and at this printer's price point, and at my current experience level, I expect much more. Sorry, for droning on, I understand this is FauxHamer's review, not mine.

Ease of use I’d imagine would be the most important criteria, quality of the print just needs to be ‘pretty damn good’, build plate just needs to be satisfactory size for personally use (able to print whatever I want, but volume isn’t an issue because I’m not running a farm).
