Your "throwaway" comment about light wave impedance matching made this click for me. I guess you were talking about anti-reflective coatings. One way to stop something reflecting is just to make it out of black material like your dashpot. But that's not so great. It makes sense now why impedance matching using that multilayered approach only works for certain frequencies - the same way that anti-reflective coatings work for certain wavelengths of light. Thinking of characteristic impedance as refractive index has meant I can now use all the tools, intuition, and understanding I have from optics and build on them to understand AC electronics. Brilliant, thank you!
