For convenience and space, I buy e-books and audio books these days. However, I have a bookcase of books that I would not part with. These were either given to me by loved ones, bought on rambles through vintage book shops, bought on vacation, or hold memories of school. Those are precious and I would have to be starving to even think of parting with them. Books can hold emotional connections. I still have the book my father was reading the day he died. The bookmark is still in the same place as he closed that book for the last time. How can one not be attached to such an item.

I began reading in the late 70's. The classic time for SF and fiction. I remember sitting outside while I read to get away from the noise in the house. By reading in that environment the experience brought in the physical world whether it was warm and sunny, overcast and rainy or somewhere in between and added to the experience. With the smell of the books and the feel of the paper it helped imprint that enjoyment in my mind. When I pick up a book and feel the pages and smell that odor it links me to that earlier time when my mind was unconcerned with adult issue. E-readers don't do that for me. If you read enough to need multiple books while on the go e-readers cannot be beat but they will never replace the memories that physical books keep for me.

I like physical books. I like ebooks. I like audiobooks. I like books…. I haves stacks of physical books all over the place, including on their bed next to me. I can carry entire libraries around with me as ebooks, and I’m out of space at home anyway. And audiobooks are just great; I enjoy a great narrator telling a good story, and I can listen to them in my car and just about anywhere. 😊

Personally I use audiobooks only in two scenarios: reread when the narrator is exceptionally good or if I am stuck with a book and want to finish it yet I am dreading it (I am completionist, but recovering lol). Fortunately the latter has happened only handful of times.

When I lived up near the Sacramento area during my 4-7th grade years I used to watch Creature Features ALL of the time, but with host Bob Wilkins! I never saw any of the John "Paul" Stanley era of the show (we had been stationed away from northern CA by then). Bob was absolutely fantastic though. No costumes or gimmicks, just him and his cigar in an old rocking chair being straight-up knowledgeable, entertaining, and with a great dry sense of humor. Loved that man. I looked forward to watching him every week. He was a big part of my childhood nostalgia and early horror movie education. My introductory to horror comics were the DC ones from the 70's, with titles like House of Mystery, House of Secrets, The Witching Hour, etc. The first ones I ever got was an issue of Tales of the Unexpected and Weird War Tales I found at a yard sale for 25 cents each when I was like, age 10. I devoured those books and wanted more. I didn't discover the EC ones until a decade or so later via reprints. Physical books are comforting and warm old friends. There is no warmth with an eBook. The same goes with comics as well.

Almost everything I read is via ebook and I deeply regret not having much of a personal library. Books are vaults, safekeeping magic across generations. Best of all, no key or secret combination is needed to unlock the treasure. Pretty cool things, these books on the shelf.

I'm glad this is a longer video, too; these special copies have their own stories behind them, and they deserve to be told and honored!

Well, Michael, this video naturally sent me to my bookshelves which are full of books I’ve collected since my childhood. I am reminded that a favorite of mine is a mass market paperback (of course) of _The Guinness Book of World Records,_ April 1964 revision. The series started in 1956, and as of 1964 people were not yet performing stunts just to get into the book, and that makes it all the more interesting than later editions.

I was reading The Sword of Shannara and remember the experience that Shea and his team faced while in the journey to Paramon. I must say that books have much emersive experience than any movie can offer. You can feel the slant light of dawn, the mist of morning, the warmth of afternoon, drizzle in the evening forest, dampness of swamps, gloom of the night and what not. You become part of the character's journey and stand next to him in every plots. I was not a reader few years ago, but I think reading (especially fiction) has made me a much different person now. Thanks Michael to take this culture forward.

Thank you so much for doing this and I loved it. I don’t have anything against e-readers either and get why people use them, I just thought my points hadn’t really been made in the debate and people put the affection for physical books down to just nostalgia, and while that plays a part as you say, it’s an ongoing relationship and the first one I mentioned is one I was still reading (and finished yesterday). That was a recent relationship. Sometimes books are linked to a therapeutic thing too, like when I reread I Am Legend while I was recuperating from my time in hospital 2 years ago. Awesome video and I appreciate you taking the time to talking about your books here. We bought my daughter the manuscript version of Frankenstein. It’s her all time favourite book.

Poe's Tales of Mystery & Imagination.. a huge old heavy hardback with a wraparound painted sleeve I would read in the library, frequently borrowed over several years. The cover and internal plates painted by Arthur Rackham, atmospheric feverish detailed crazy pictures to go with those dark stories. I found the book once more by accident after it had relocated to another library, years later I saw the 1986 facsimile edition by Octopuss Press and snapped it up, only a portion of the wraparound cover was used on the facsimile cover but everything else is replicated perfectly. I still have it, read it again this year, I still adore that book.. it bewitched me as a child and still has that hold on me, one of my favourite books.

I had that edition of Creature Features, but sadly i read through it so often it literally fell to pieces - which is the only drawback of owning physical books, but then even e-readers break down eventually leaving you without your whole library. I still have the original UK edition of R. Campbell's Demons by Daylight, which has survived several international moves in its time. Great topic, Michael.

When I finish a book I take it and look it over, flip through it, reread some passages and run my hands over it almost as a caress because I feel like I've accomplished something. Sometimes I'll even smell it. I just don't get that experience from my kindle because it's too impersonal. You also can't see the excitement on someone's face when they unwrap a book you've given them as a present and wrote a personal note to them inside wishing them a merry Christmas or happy birthday. I still have books my parents and grandparents received as children with inscriptions inside by long dead family and friends by which they can again live briefly in my memory and by which I hope to be remembered by my grandchildren someday when I'm gone. There's also a craftsmanship to some physical books that doesn't exist in eReaders. But having said that I'm not optimistic about the future of print. I believe a day will come when physical books will be a novelty and most books will never be published on paper. Sorry for all the edits but physical books are something I'm passionate about because there is so much more to them that ebooks just don't have

I value and treasure books both physical and electronic, but mostly the physical. Thanks for the insights about the ones that matter so much to yourself; I could very much relate to a number of your titles. In 1975, when I was a lad of 9 years, I walked into a local bookstore to discover an oversize paperbacked volume by Richard J. Anobile, featuring photos and narrative from the 1931 movie, "Frankenstein". The cover is a shiny silver and black, just beautiful. My dad generously indulged my desire to own it; I have kept it with me throughout the decades, always treasuring it. As a teenager I became interested in California history, and was engrossed by the legend of bandit Joaquin Murrieta. From our local library I checked out a 1938 library bound book titled, "The Truth About Murietta", by J.C. Cunningham. Fell in love with this title. When I went in to pay overdue fees years later that I assumed I'd be owing, the library had evidently lost track, as they found no record of it in their catalog. So I got to keep it, this great, rare edition; it's another one that I treasure. There's others, but I won't bore you; you probably get the gist. I was pleasantly surprised that among your stack of loves is John Stanley's "Creature Features" book. John is still among us (and you've probably seen his recent appearances on KZbin). Back in 2008 John came to Santa Cruz for a reprise of his Creature Features show at the Del Mar Theater, and was nice enough to inscribe a couple of his books for me. John was (and still is) a great horror host as was his colleague and predecessor on the Creature Features show, the late Bob Wilkins. Another movie book I love and recommend is Michael Weldon's "Psychotronic Movie Guide", which came out around 1983. Thank you for your channel, Mr. Vaughan. Your humor, unique delivery, and insights into books make it a delight and a pleasure to watch and to learn from.

I'm five days behind in watching your videos Michael, please don't send Roger after me! So often, the first text through which we encounter a literary work is the one we come to love and so it will always be special for us. That's not so true of ebooks of course but the ebook has become the Gutenberg printing press of the digital age which, as you pointed out, allows access to so many works (not just fiction) to so many people. Ellison was never backward in coming forward about how right he was on most things. My colleague's brother was friends with Ellison and dined with him on many occasions; he often said that you went for the dinner but stayed for the Ellison Live Show. That Frankenstein book with Shelley's drafts is amazing, what a treasure trove of material. And for me, receiving something hand-written like a letter links you to the person in a more personal way, which is how I would feel if I read Shelley's novel in her own handwriting. What a wonderful video Michael; you've touched on the practical, the philosophical, the personal..... on what makes reading and writing such a vital part of being human.

Ebooks will never be the same as a physical book, but finding the time for physical books is so much harder than sneaking in pages here and there on say the kindle app on my phone. I struggle to get time to finish 4 physical books a month but I can easily read 8 on my phone if I stumble on a good series. There’s also so many self/indie published books that I can’t find or can’t afford physically but are part of a cheap subscription as an ebook.

As for handwriting, I am making a commonplace book with notes from the books that I have mentioned in my previous comment for notes on literal techniques used in them with examples of them in the text. Plus notes in general. Also, I record myself reading out loud into a voice recorder app on my phone. I find that the Clash of Kings book is easier to read out loud compared to the Star Wars books. But I do both methods of reading, to be honest with the commonplace book method that I have mentioned.

What a heartfelt personal journey! It give me a little better insight (perhaps) on why you make videos. What a wonderful record of the emotional presence of the ephemeral you, Cherish the books you love and let this be a record to those who would come after! I feel this way about a number of my books - sometimes it feels like only one cover can be "The Right One". Of course I understand *your* Right one will be different. ;) Like my Tolkien Box was the one prior to yours with the Tolkien art on the covers. Kull will always involve Severin art (even though I'm thinking of the book!) And for all my knowledge of genre art I *still* think of the Whelan mural covers first when someone says "Lovecraft." Somehow, for me, picking the right cover, or edition enhances the reading of the book. Thanks for the personal journey on this one: It kinda makes me want to leave some sorta video record to leave behind me. . .

I have a paperback copy of Gone With the Wind that I've reread countless times since 8th grade. I kept reading that same copy even when it began falling apart and had to be held together by a rubber band. It was only in more recent years that I finally bought a new copy. But I still have that one. It lives in a plastic bag on my bookshelf. I'm not even sure I could still read the small print. But I can't bear to part with it. Same with my cheapie paperback of Jane Eyre. I had never read it, so I got a cheap copy in case I hated it. I ended up LOVING it! Unfortunately, I got caught umbrella-less in an unexpected rainstorm. I remember running into the home where I was going to babysit and spreading it out on paper towels on the kitchen table in my desperate effort to save it. It looks awful. But I can't bring myself to throw it out. Not only does it have all the little tabs of my favorite bits, but it has those memories of the rainstorm and my friends' apartment and their kids, as well. I read it again recently on my Kindle. Was it the same exact words? Yes. Did I love it on a second reading? Yes. Was it quite the same? No. Can I explain exactly why? Not really. And that's the beauty of it.

Michael, you make my life hard. I've been rereading a set of three horror novels which were dubbed the Halloween trifecta of horror back in the early eighties from a now defunct publisher (leisure). Three standalones, released every halloween, with cool pumpkin/ghoul/skull laden covers, small towns, thin characters, terrible dialogs, fun but cheesy action sequences. Terrible writing, fun but silly, and loads of good feeling nostagia from a simpler time for me. Youthful small town memories, lousy writing, and too many dog deaths (deal killer for me now). The question being......do I keep them for the nostalgia, or unhaul for the lousy writing? They are obviously out of print now (David Robbins). Ughh!!! What to do?

I was looking at the 1946 edition of "Best Ghost Stories" by James, on Ebay. It looks like a very durable HC book, and I really want a collection of M.R. James because I liked the movie adaptations produced by the BBC in the 1970s of a number of these tales. But I opted to buy [both volumes of] James' stories published by Penguin Classics in 2005-2006, only because they're edited and with notes by S.T. Joshi...and I'm sort of a completist. (I had bought the three volumes of Lovecraft's stories-also with notes by Mr. Joshi-and really love them.Very good scholarship, which I value). Nevertheless, I probably will still buy the "Best Ghost Stories" volume, as it's easy on the ol' eyes, and has loads of character.

My Star Book Edition (1980 reprint UK paperback) of DEMONS BY DAYLIGHT has the same stories as your hardback first edition - I had to freeze frame the brief look you revealed of the contents page. It also has what looks like dried blood on a couple of the pages. *GULP?!*

I wonder if it was just the American edition that was different. And Roger says dried blood on books is not unusual.

The collection does feature a Lovecraft character 'Errol Undercliffe'. Maybe the Lovecraft/Arkham House estate made Campell change it for a while there in the 1970s. Just guessing. @@michaelk.vaughan8617

Hi, Michael. Your video is excellent. Michael, is that Grant edition of The Hour of the Dragon, an unedited text edition? Is it the same as the Berkley Putnam text, unedited as stated by Karl Edward Wagner? The illustrations look amazing. Are there black and white illustrations too?

That edition is based on the original Weird Tales text. Mostly color illustrations.

I was hoping you would make this video. People were making videos about e-readers which I don’t have. I prefer physical books. I really like paperback books.

I dont like e books. I want the ability to give the books I read to others. It's a wonderful thing to bless someone with a book. What if it breaks down? Your screwed.
