What’s really interesting about physical media sales is that they’ve only been growing over the last 20 years. The percentage of a games sales is smaller physically, but the actual number of units a game sells physically has been increasing. The industry just wants to kill it off so they can maximize profits
@tabbofii

That sounds contradictory. Explain?

Well, of course physical media sales have been growing over the last 20 years since the number of gamers have increased over the past 20 years.....
@ganymedehedgehog371

You say that’s “interesting” when it’s extremely basic scaling. More gamers = more games sold which will mean more physical copies are sold. If they ended physical games today it would likely only marginally affect revenue because of the larger amount of gamers.

I got fed up , rebought a 360 and PS3 last year as Christmas presents to myself. Really enjoying them more than my current ps5. I'm 37 now , I've realized fun comes in a console that hasn't been sold in over 9 years.

I'm playing and collecting for 360 as well. The prices of games for them are going up and I have a suspicion this in no small part is people getting fed up with modern games and turning back a generation or two. 7th gen games really do still feel fresh and fun.

This is why preservation and cracking games is important, without it games can be completely lost forever thanks to companies would rather destroy the game then let people continue playing it. Absolutely encourage making backups of physical games too in case something happens to them.

Given that at release many games are basically unfinished, and how many updates a game usually receives over several years, sometimes completely overhauling mechanics, having access to the physical release is virtually pointless.

@justfaceit0005 It's not just about bugs and glitches, it's about ajustments over time in abilities, balance between classes, difficulty, qol additions, etc. Yes, if there was a greater emphasis on getting those aspects 'right' upon release the updates wouldn't be crucial to playing a well functioning game, but as it stands I wouldn't want to play the launch version of a modern game after some months or years have passed. That's not to say I think the ability to update games is bad, far from it. Once a game was released in the past you were pretty much stuck with that version, game breaking bugs and all. Now at least we have the tools to fix and even polish a game to enhance the experience for the player.

I went back to old hardware for this reason. Bought physical games, Bought a PSVita, The Nintendo switch is also a pretty good platform for physical (for the most part, especially first party titles since they often release revisions of their cartridges with updates included. It is however exhausting to have chase and collect the latest version of the cartridges. As most retailers and sellers are even unaware there is a revision code on the back of the cartridge to see what version you have). I still own a ps5. But I’ll research a game before buying it. I’ll try and finish the game with Wifi turned OFF. If I find out it doesn’t run from a disc or it leaves out too many features, I will go back to the store and get a refund. I wish I could have games like Hogwarts Legacy or Jedi Survivor in my collection. Great games, but knowing I don’t own them just ruins the experience for me. And I know for a lot of people it’s exactly the same. Great Video. Good on you to make more people aware.

@justfaceit0005 Because I bought the game, I paid money for it, I liked it, and it doesn’t have to be an ephemeral experience. This isn’t about hoarding every video game ever made and never playing them, most people probably couldn’t list more than 50 that they love and always want to be able to play, and why shouldn’t they be able to? Pre-WWII silent movies have better preservation than video games. I’m tired of this nihilistic attitude about the things I like, I'm human, it's human to care and it’s human to have big emotions about these things.

Sadly I am thinking I am about break from gaming. The last two games I've bought (Physical) were Broken as hell, EVEN AFTER GIANT PATCHES. Currently I'm playing games on my backlog and I don't think I'll get a new game unless I really want it. The prices are also turning me off, with 70 dollar games, unfinished, with quality of 60 dollar games, and most of the time worth way less.

As time goes on it becomes increasingly obvious to me that we must return to physical, for the simple fact that if you buy digital, you didn't really "buy" anything. You paid for the license to play the game, but you don't "own" it. At any time the company could decide to just pull it and give you a middle finger. Even though your purchased the game. Ethically and logically speaking, you deserve to keep access to something you own as long as you want to keep owning it. With physical, you will always have that copy as long as you don't lose it or you decide to sell it

I have gotten lazy in recent years and gotten digital games because the deals can be proper enticing, but I've made a pact with myself not to do that if it exists physically. Physical libraries are the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. If digital listed for a different price I would be more lenient but they don't. This means that once I buy a game digitally, i don't actually own it and the game itself has no value. If I needed to, I could sell off the entirety or parts of my physical collection if I needed the money. For smaller budget indie titles it makes complete sense and I don't really have a gripe with those, especially since if they do well they get the limited printing treatment.

Damn its been so long! I completely agree with everything said in this video, Consumerism is such a big killer for the gaming industry as a whole. One of the worst examples of a modern release being unfinished in my opinion was Pokemon bdsp, they didn't even have finished music. That and bdsp was just a carbon copy of Diamond and Pearl. It even had the speed issues that the originals had and that Platinum had fixed back in the day.

Digital vs Physical is a meaningless Reddit-tier debate. What matters is DRM-free games (games which you actually OWN) like GOG, and games with DRM (which you merely have the permission to play). If a game is Truly DRM-free, like GOG installers, you can burn your own physical media for it. Physical media dies, DRM servers die, the only thing that is eternal is the ability to make your own backups. DRM and anti-piracy IS cancer on the industry and should be outlawed. This is why piracy is morally good, if a game contains DRM, the publisher has said "we do not respect our customers" and so it deserves to be pirated. anyway nice video 👍🏻

Yes but no. DRM free is paramount, but it also has to be physical. If it's digital you're still getting the short end of the deal since you pay the price of an actual game but don't get anything unless you print everything yourself, therefore making it cost more to have the real thing. Remember, if you are forced to download the game, why even pay?
@happygofishing
@happygofishing 8 ай бұрын
@@SPTX. But if its DRM free you can make your own physical media. For example, I could buy a DVD with Ubuntu burned on it, or I could download the ISO and burn one myself, these are functionally identical products, despite one being "unofficial".

@MrExplorer1989 8 ай бұрын
Exactly. Most files on any computer are DRM-free and you can copy them any number of times you want and transfer them to any other device you want and run them on that other device. Nobody care that actually it's just an electronic file. If you make a budget for your home, don't tell me you print it ; you just have it electronically on your computer, and it's fine. We wanna be able to do that with games, movies and musics.

Like, most stores I know barely have any PC games and even 10 years ago when I put on the disc into the computer, steam just downloaded all of the stuff instead of installing it off disc anyways. I still have a small collection of boxes from the 2000s and early 2010s but it hasn't seen a new box in ages.

I like to buy Collector's Editions for some games when they offer a steelbook or figurine or something like that. In reality, if I own all games as a rom it's much more secure than a physical disc or cartridge. My digital games and saves are backed up on my own personal cloud, way more secure than a physical version and nobody can take them from me. I'd rather dump my own Switch games and play the rom on PC, saves and roms are backed up on my own cloud, they look and run much better on PC too! Same with movies, I rip all my DVDs to computer and stream them to my devices

I hope one day physical PC games come back one day since i miss them. There is a clear difference between a physical copy of something you bought ,you can see on the shelf and a digital copy you can only see you own for now, until they decide they want to take it down or remove it. Also i would like to see some kind of rule where if a mobile game shuts down that has a lot of story content you have an option to play it offline when it shuts down. MEGA MAN X DiVE Offline is a good example and i would pray that more mobile games end up being like this so it's preserved instead of being lost media like the Tales of Luminaria game. You can watch the anime promotional material but if you want to play the game itself, you can't.

I’ve had my ps4 for almost ten years and there’s only a handful of games i played and im getting sick of having to delete installation for newer games. Physical game editions - if even available - nowadays have the big drawback of being mostly half broken and can't really be played without the usual series of patches. One of the worst developer out there currently is Owlcat (Pathfinder 1+2, Warhammer, each of them has 50+ patches to fix broken scripts of quests and balancing). The only real viable way of storing bought games is to download the latest (hopefully fixed version) and get a no-cd crack to play it without the online store checks (steam, ubi launcher and so on). Luckily most games are cracked in a few days, months and only a handful are uncracked so far.

But i do want physical media to continue, solely for the sake of giving people options. Plus i doubt when physical media ever fully goes away that game publishers will finally lower the price of digital games, like they used to make excuses that retailers forced them to keep digital prices same. A counter-argument to supporting online / digital sales is paying for hosting and support for all titles forever. It may not be profitable for Ubisoft to do it it (and EA already shut down, so they decided the can't), but even 3rd party hosting like Apple, Steam, Google, etc. also charge. This is the Pokemon dilemma. Have all Pokemon in every Pokemon game or only spend the time creating new models and content with a sizable portion of the lot. My point is, the group of games being supported shifts as publishers can only provide hosting and support for them. You can even equate this to console generations. Little by little publishers decide not to release games on a console till at some point, they transition their focus fully to the next-now-current-gen console. Even consumers are this way. They can't play every game at all time. Supporting gamers who want access to every game at all times is financially perilous to a company.

Worst yet, for Spyro Trilogy [edit - switch version], only a small portion of each game is on the disc. Then when you reach the balloon guy in Spyro 1 for instance, you are prompted to download the rest of the game. For me, if Spyro 1 was completely on the disc, I would of bought it since it is the only one I care about. This stupity is nonsense.
@jpward01
@jpward01 8 ай бұрын
I remember playing it once and it did block my progress in Spyro 1, but I think that might have been due to the update being partially done at the time? I don't know for certain, but it doesn't do that from a fresh install on a PS4/5 while disconnected from the internet for me.. Switch version doesn't have the full first game on the cart, though, sadly. 😔

And this is why piracy is completely justified and GOG is the only online storethat does it right. For every game i bought, i have a copy on my NAS that don't require anything online.

This idea that we ever 'owned' a game is a misnomer - no, we owned installation media ONLY - use of such media is governed by a LICENSE that outlines conditions of use. THAT is what we 'owned'. :P It always WAS a 'glorified rental' experience. They were ALWAYS going to end servers for older games - ALWAYS. Gaming companies have been LYING to consumers from the very beginning. Yeap even way back to cartridges. :P

Final fantasy VIII, and IX have four discs, on the original PS1 they need to quit being so damn cheap nowadays, and put the games on the disks! I didn't buy a physical game to pay for digital renting BS! Where they can take it away in a few months, because for whatever stupid reason, because I don't actually own it! Ps1, and Ps2, and the Original Xbox had no downloadable junk thats why they are the best to me. The Metalgear trilogy, and Bioshock trilogy on Ps4 are Huge rip offs, they don't even give you Metal gear solid you get nes Metal gear with some extras, and have to download the rest.

Just want to ask I've ordered the p3p and persona 4 golden physical editions and haven't gotten them yet. As someone who uses LRG do deliveries vary between people? I don't support the practice that I had supported.
@jpward01
@jpward01 8 ай бұрын
If you pre-ordered one of the collector's editions, they'll take much longer to produce than the standard copies did. Also, if there are multiple items in an LRG order the whole thing is shipped when the last item finishes being produced. If it's neither you might have to contact their support. 🤷‍♂️

@@jpward01 it's neither. I bought the card board box to house them both? That might be it. But I'll contact support if I don't get it within the next 2 weeks. Thanks 👍

Then if it is the future the company’s shouldn’t take stuff you purchase digitally away which has been happening with multiple products Like you can like digital you can like physical but if you want to buy digital the company can take it away off there service whenever they want so it’s a potential waste of money

its your own fault if you buy a new game. if you wait until there are fixes and patches later on, then it might be improved. also, if you wait long enough, you can get games cheaper. i never understand why people pre-order, or buy games when they are released. maybe if i was really interested i might get it sooner, but usually i wait for reviews, and months or even a year later. later | || | | | | ne gative 1
