What’s really interesting about physical media sales is that they’ve only been growing over the last 20 years. The percentage of a games sales is smaller physically, but the actual number of units a game sells physically has been increasing. The industry just wants to kill it off so they can maximize profits
@tabbofii8 ай бұрын
That sounds contradictory. Explain?
@human222658 ай бұрын
Well, of course physical media sales have been growing over the last 20 years since the number of gamers have increased over the past 20 years.....
@ganymedehedgehog3718 ай бұрын
You say that’s “interesting” when it’s extremely basic scaling. More gamers = more games sold which will mean more physical copies are sold. If they ended physical games today it would likely only marginally affect revenue because of the larger amount of gamers.

@justfaceit0005 It's not just about bugs and glitches, it's about ajustments over time in abilities, balance between classes, difficulty, qol additions, etc. Yes, if there was a greater emphasis on getting those aspects 'right' upon release the updates wouldn't be crucial to playing a well functioning game, but as it stands I wouldn't want to play the launch version of a modern game after some months or years have passed. That's not to say I think the ability to update games is bad, far from it. Once a game was released in the past you were pretty much stuck with that version, game breaking bugs and all. Now at least we have the tools to fix and even polish a game to enhance the experience for the player.

I went back to old hardware for this reason. Bought physical games, Bought a PSVita, The Nintendo switch is also a pretty good platform for physical (for the most part, especially first party titles since they often release revisions of their cartridges with updates included. It is however exhausting to have chase and collect the latest version of the cartridges. As most retailers and sellers are even unaware there is a revision code on the back of the cartridge to see what version you have). I still own a ps5. But I’ll research a game before buying it. I’ll try and finish the game with Wifi turned OFF. If I find out it doesn’t run from a disc or it leaves out too many features, I will go back to the store and get a refund. I wish I could have games like Hogwarts Legacy or Jedi Survivor in my collection. Great games, but knowing I don’t own them just ruins the experience for me. As time goes on it becomes increasingly obvious to me that we must return to physical, for the simple fact that if you buy digital, you didn't really "buy" anything. You paid for the license to play the game, but you don't "own" it. At any time the company could decide to just pull it and give you a middle finger. Even though your purchased the game. Ethically and logically speaking, you deserve to keep access to something you own as long as you want to keep owning it. With physical, you will always have that copy as long as you don't lose it or you decide to sell it

Physical libraries are the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. If digital listed for a different price I would be more lenient but they don't. This means that once I buy a game digitally, i don't actually own it and the game itself has no value. If I needed to, I could sell off the entirety or parts of my physical collection if I needed the money. For smaller budget indie titles it makes complete sense and I don't really have a gripe with those, especially since if they do well they get the limited printing treatment.

Digital vs Physical is a meaningless Reddit-tier debate. What matters is DRM-free games (games which you actually OWN) like GOG, and games with DRM (which you merely have the permission to play). If a game is Truly DRM-free, like GOG installers, you can burn your own physical media for it. Physical media dies, DRM servers die, the only thing that is eternal is the ability to make your own backups. DRM and anti-piracy IS cancer on the industry and should be outlawed. This is why piracy is morally good, if a game contains DRM, the publisher has said "we do not respect our customers" and so it deserves to be pirated. anyway nice video 👍🏻

Yes but no. DRM free is paramount, but it also has to be physical. If it's digital you're still getting the short end of the deal since you pay the price of an actual game but don't get anything unless you print everything yourself, therefore making it cost more to have the real thing. Remember, if you are forced to download the game, why even pay?
@happygofishing8 ай бұрын
@@SPTX. But if its DRM free you can make your own physical media. For example, I could buy a DVD with Ubuntu burned on it, or I could download the ISO and burn one myself, these are functionally identical products, despite one being "unofficial".

Exactly. Most files on any computer are DRM-free and you can copy them any number of times you want and transfer them to any other device you want and run them on that other device. Nobody care that actually it's just an electronic file. If you make a budget for your home, don't tell me you print it ; you just have it electronically on your computer, and it's fine. We wanna be able to do that with games, movies and musics.

There is a clear difference between a physical copy of something you bought ,you can see on the shelf and a digital copy you can only see you own for now, until they decide they want to take it down or remove it. Also i would like to see some kind of rule where if a mobile game shuts down that has a lot of story content you have an option to play it offline when it shuts down. MEGA MAN X DiVE Offline is a good example and i would pray that more mobile games end up being like this so it's preserved instead of being lost media like the Tales of Luminaria game. Physical game editions - if even available - nowadays have the big drawback of being mostly half broken and can't really be played without the usual series of patches. One of the worst developer out there currently is Owlcat (Pathfinder 1+2, Warhammer, each of them has 50+ patches to fix broken scripts of quests and balancing). The only real viable way of storing bought games is to download the latest (hopefully fixed version) and get a no-cd crack to play it without the online store checks (steam, ubi launcher and so on). Luckily most games are cracked in a few days, months and only a handful are uncracked so far.

A counter-argument to supporting online / digital sales is paying for hosting and support for all titles forever. It may not be profitable for Ubisoft to do it it (and EA already shut down, so they decided the can't), but even 3rd party hosting like Apple, Steam, Google, etc. also charge. This is the Pokemon dilemma. Have all Pokemon in every Pokemon game or only spend the time creating new models and content with a sizable portion of the lot. My point is, the group of games being supported shifts as publishers can only provide hosting and support for them. You can even equate this to console generations. Little by little publishers decide not to release games on a console till at some point, they transition their focus fully to the next-now-current-gen console. Even consumers are this way. They can't play every game at all time. Supporting gamers who want access to every game at all times is financially perilous to a company.

Just want to ask I've ordered the p3p and persona 4 golden physical editions and haven't gotten them yet. As someone who uses LRG do deliveries vary between people? I don't support the practice that I had supported.
@jpward018 ай бұрын
If you pre-ordered one of the collector's editions, they'll take much longer to produce than the standard copies did. Also, if there are multiple items in an LRG order the whole thing is shipped when the last item finishes being produced. If it's neither you might have to contact their support. 🤷♂️
@hotchilli73178 ай бұрын
@@jpward01 it's neither. I bought the card board box to house them both? That might be it. But I'll contact support if I don't get it within the next 2 weeks. Thanks 👍

Digital is the future as space to put stuff becomes more expensive haha
@thewhovianwithasmallcollec73198 ай бұрын
Then if it is the future the company’s shouldn’t take stuff you purchase digitally away which has been happening with multiple products Like you can like digital you can like physical but if you want to buy digital the company can take it away off there service whenever they want so it’s a potential waste of money

its your own fault if you buy a new game. if you wait until there are fixes and patches later on, then it might be improved. also, if you wait long enough, you can get games cheaper. i never understand why people pre-order, or buy games when they are released. maybe if i was really interested i might get it sooner, but usually i wait for reviews, and months or even a year later. later | || | | | | ne gative 1

Or hear me out… the developers finish the game before it releases so the consumer is buying a finished product and not a janky mess

Digital games are great if they are DRM Free
@djr-crowe8 ай бұрын
I simply don't play console games that don't have a physical edition where the entire game is on the cart. Online only? Nope. DRM? Piss off. Broken on Launch? hahaha no. I have so many games, I can do without the greed-fueled shit. GOG wherever possible for PC games.
