I'm sticking with the blue cases for aesthetic reasons. I like the look of a full library. It makes me feel like I'm in a video store. Also, when I look for a movie I read the spines. I love how the Kino/Lorber spines all look the same or how the Arrow logos are in perfect alignment. I'm not thumbing my nose at that kind of storage. There's no wrong way to create a library, the important thing is buying physical media.

This is exactly what I feel. I love the unity and the alignment. I would never sleeve. Or maybe not never, never is a long time. 😂 But to me I want the grand feeling of my collection. Sleeving would make me feel like they are burned / copy.

Yup, that's how I feel too. He did say he doesn;t sleeve "collector" type stuff, but I really like the look of shelves of DVD and bluray spies and as you say, some studies deliberately kept their covers/spines a unified design, specifically to appeal to collectors.

I adopted this after watching a previous video, and it's been game-changing. I sleeve the average releases now and save my shelf space for my special collection and favorite movies. It's the best of both worlds, and if a disc ever crosses over into the favorite category, it's super easy to put it back in a traditional case and on the shelf. I had quit collecting for a while when I ran out of space and this helped get me back into the hobby.

Just cut out streaming except Disney+ (for new release shows) and free apps like Tubi about 6 months ago and started collecting physical media after stumbling upon this channel. The collection is still pretty small at around 1,000 titles with a lot of space to grow in a spare bedroom, but this is great for down the line when shelves need to be curated. Thank you 🙌🏼

I have started this process since I seen your last few videos at the end of last year. I have over 5,500 Blu-ray's and DVD's. I have currently sleeved 3,000+ movies so far. It's a work in progress but also so fun and satisfying to see how much space it saves. I called a few venues to donate the plastic cases with no luck so I recycle them to the local recycle center. I also put the discs in those simple disc paper sleeves to help keep them in good condition while in the plastic sleeve. Then I put them in these fabric storage cases that holds a good number of sleeves organizing them alphabetically. It's perfect and easier to find and sort movies. I have done my video game collection as well with the PS4 sleeves. PS3/XBOX ONE games fit perfect in Blu-ray sleeves, PS4/PS5 in their video game sleeves they sell, Nintendo 3DS/DS games fit in the CD sleeves, and the basic XBOX/PS2 games fit in the DVD sleeves. The only thing is how expensive it can get but with discounts and specials they sometimes have can help alleviate the cost but makes it a fun project to do in moderation thru the months. Thanks so much for your videos on this subject as it has truly been a game changer and makes collecting fun and exciting once again. 👍👍

As someone storing thousands of discs using a basically similar method, I might suggest that you stick something in the back of those pull-out shelving units that props up the discs straight upright (maybe a little block of wood or some folded cardboard or crumpled paper bag). I would be concerned with potential malformation of the discs occurring over time with them resting against each other at an angle. I have no scientific proof of this being a problem, but I've always been very cautious about any potential storage anomalies.

I havent bought into the sleeves.....Yet. I'm at the brink where I'm just about to run out of space. If I were to sleeve only my DVD's, not blu's or 4k's it would probably buy me a good 3 - 5 years of blu//4k space. I'm a limited budget per month for movies so sleeving 400 odd DVD's would keep my wall happy, my wife happy, and declutter for awhile. I probably got less than a year of shelf space left at my rate of collecting, so I will have to star this video and come back to it. Great video Heath...

I use DiscSox. They can do the Warner snapper cases with no cutting. you pull the cover out of the plastic frame and it fits in their sleeve. Great design. Blu and DVD sizes and multi disc set inserts that are padded. Like you Heath, I only sleeve the titles that I don't anticipate multiple views from. This leaves more room for the titles I want to display. This way I can keep so many more disks in the space I have. Having a vast selection is what makes a great library and sleeves make this possible for most people.

I have so much mire room and also much more control and oversight over my collection now... everything is nicely sorted in genres and alphabetical, and is readily available right at my fingertip! I gave away most of my snapper-cases and found "sleevable" alternatives (DVD oder BD) for them... also I'm just using the DVD-sleeves... because they are cheapest and can house all formats... DVD, BD-Slim and regular, Criterion BDs... everything... and it looks (at least to my eye) better in the shelf if all sleeves have the same hight.

I’ve been kicking this idea for over two years since my DVD and Blu-ray collection has become more of a pain than a pleasure since I ran out of room to store them, which they’re all over my house since the one spare bedroom use to store my collection, in bookcases that covered two of the walls, was overflowing with media. I pulled the trigger last March and went with Tarifold sleeves and felt pouches. First I did about 100 and slept on it for a few days BEFORE committing to this process. Well, after a week, I felt good and committed to doing this to process since you keep all the artwork… I do not save or collect slip covers, so most of them get trashed anyway. To date, I’ve did about 1400 DVDs and about 600 Blu-ray discs at this point, with another 100 of each that will go into sleeves within the next few weeks. My plan is to keep 500-ish DVDs and 500-ish Blu-ray discs on display in that spare bedroom, which will allow it to be used once again as a guest overnight room since it has a sleeper couch. This gives me a more satisfying feeling with my collection since “I’m” now in control, instead of it being in charge. Also, I have been purging my collection of DVDs that I’ve upgraded to Blu-rays over the years. I sell them back to a local music shop for store credit and the ones they do not want, they go to Goodwill or Salvation Army. I have over 3500 CDs and once I’m done sleeving my movies, I’ll sleeve about 1800 CDs as well. I’m storing them in clear plastic media storage bins from the Container Store and they can be stored much easier in a closet and/or under a bed… Six bins will fit under a queen size bed with ease. Honestly, this method is worth it, especially if you have thousands of discs and you haven’t converted your whole basement into a media library…. If “I” had a basement, I would have done that, so this was my only real option that would work for me.

An elegant solution for a more civilized age. My only issue is what what I do with my cases? Granted, you can just put them in boxes and store them but I don't even have closet space at this point. I think the ultimate problem is wanting everything when we really should be curating our collections. I'm probably 300+ in my backlog right now and keep adding to it. It's a problem.

My Blu-rays / 4Ks are still under 2000 total so I just use the cases and shelves. I have done these for my DVDs. Put the studio DVDs in sleeves and then the box like you and then all of my Warner Archive DVDs (found at pawn/thrift shops for under $1 each) in a binder with the sleeves with the hole punches. That binder can then go on my bottom shelf for easy access. The other DVDs are just in a closet tucked away. For my snapper cases -- I had about a dozen, I just ended up finding the standard DVD release artwork online and printing it to put in the sleeve. That way my snapper case is unaltered if I ever upgrade and decide to donate, sell, give away the DVD.

Normal Dvd and Bluray covers are not creased or folded. They are bent around the side of the case yes but if you remove the paper and set it on something flat it has no folds or crease. It does take the shape of the case but not damaged. These sleaves make you put that crease or fold in the art work paper.

Some might not care about folding the paper but I have to agree with you. I'd only consider storing the disc and paper insert separately if it didn't cause any damage.

I wouldn't say people don't care, I'd say most of us don't consider folding along the bend to be damage.

Heath, as some people have mentioned that docs could be damaged in the sleeves due to contact with the paper of the cover, what is your opinion on that? Any experience? My attempt would be not to stack sleeves in boxes super tight but with room to flip through.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight Ай бұрын
My opinion and my experience is that such concerns are unfounded. I've had some of my discs in paper sleeves since the late 1990s. I haven't tried to play them all, but the ones I have are fine. Here's the reality: discs fail. I've had discs fail just sitting on my shelf in their proper cases. I've had off-gassing from those cases permanently bond to some of my discs. Our discs are never truly safe, and they're not going to last forever. Some will last 5 years. Some may last 20. Some may last 50, but none of them are going to last our whole lifetimes, I believe. I used to think they would, but I don't anymore. Every format is corruptible, but at least with this method of storage, I can get my living space back.

@@CerealAtMidnight thanks Heath, I agree and would add to the discussion that many CDs are put in environmentally friendly paper cases by record companies so they are permanently touched by a thick paper. It is hard to get these discs out in some cases as well. I guess many have the 4K Star Wars complete set with the Death Star design. These discs are also packed in paper. This should have the same concern for those. As long as the plastic of the sleeves is not toxic to discs I am fine with them.

I remove the snapper case from its rails and tuck the artwork flat in a comic book bag. The disc goes into a paper sleeve in the same bag and I store them with my Laserdiscs.

I've been looking into these sleeves recently for my (quite small) collection of around 250 releases. A combination of DVD, Blu Rays and 4K. Had a gap in buying physical media as I moved to digital, purely for space saving reasons, but you just can't beat physical media, so I've started buying more again. The downside is I have nowhere to keep/display them. They're all in boxes in a small storage cupboard. These sleeves would make my collection a lot more accessible. I was looking at the binders, but the carry cases seem a lot more efficient, in terms of space and accessibility. I could likely fit 3 of those in my TV unit. I'm even thinking of downgrading some of my steelbooks for standard cases, just so I can sleeve them. My only concern is card slipcovers. I have a lot of these and would prefer not to throw them. Do you know if these would also fit in the sleeves alongside the case artwork?

Definitely a great way to save space, and I do need to do that. However, I will hold on to about 30 each of DVD, CD, and Blu-Ray empty cases for when I decide to sell/giveaway a title. There's no way I could sell them in just a sleeve like these.

After your first one on this I started using Tarifold binders for dvds...for blu rays I use Atlantic sleeves as they have 2 pockets on one sleeve plus a cover sleeve for the art. FYI, check your municipality to see if the cases are recyclable...some places they aren't. If your Library loans dvds check to see if they need some cases.

I tried to repurpose them so they didn't end up in a landfill, so I sold some and I gave some away, but in the end, there's not really much interest in used Blu-ray cases so I threw most of them away.

There was a whole thing a while back about CDs reacting with chemicals in the cardboard over time when they were packaged in cardboard sleeves Don't know if that was ever proven to be a real problem, but if there's any truth in it then at least the conventional cases keep the disc playing surface suspended away from other materials, although felt sounds harmless enough

Thanks for sharing another video on this space saving product! Quick question: Do you also recycle all the unused cases, or do you keep some in a different place for later usage? I only ask cause I can see the benefit of having some extra cases that you can swap out when others become damaged.

The only negative so far is that some people are saying that the single dvd sleeves start to split along the seams after taking the disc out only a few times. Have you or anyone who has them experienced this?

@@CerealAtMidnight the really cheap DVDr's have scratched easily on me, even with careful handling. Mill Creek 50-movie collection value packs - yes I'm looking at them. My parents limit how much space I'm allowed, I tried the value packs at first, but after two viewings of the same movie, they start to freeze and pixelate. This is why I have so many DVD's now. I think I have almost all of the Shudder horror movies on DVD, every single Shriek Show DVD (they put out the best jungle flicks), blue underground, anchor bay, and all the movies highly recommended by Joe Bob Briggs. I started with the history of horror all the classics, moved on to collecting all the banned video nasties, and spiraled out from there. Jess Franco and Jean Rollin has made a ton of movies easy on the eyes.

I have well over 1000 discs and need to move to a much smaller place. This works for me. (Anyone have useful advice on how to find a new home for all those empty cases?) But why are the blu-ray sleeves twice as expensive as the DVD size? They of course fit the cover better but it's like I'm getting half as much for the same price.

You'll likely have no luck finding a new home for those cases. Some facilities will accept them for recycling, but not many. Truly, nobody wants them--not even for free. That's a good question about the Blu-ray sleeves and one that I don't have an answer to. I figure it's supply and demand.
