Yes actually movies used to come in such sleeves here and the shop keepers used to put them in plastic boxes , also such sleeves were used to cover plastic boxes to prevent them from getting dirty or scratched . There were three sizes 5 , 9 and 12 mm or sleeves for DVDs

This hack has been a lifesaver for sure. I started with CDs and DVDs (and the kids' Blu-rays), and I'm definitely going to start on my Blu-rays as soon as the sleeves are back in stock. It helps that the majority of my Blu-rays don't have slipcovers, whereas my UHD collection generally does.

Thank you for this. These sleeves were a life changer for reducing the shelf space of my DVD collection. FYI, for anyone looking for the PERFECT boxes to put these in on a shelf, Target stores are selling small wood stackable boxes that seem like they were designed specifically for these. They are called Pillowfort Small Stackable Open Front Bin. I already bought 8 of them, which should hold well over 1000 DVD's in these sleeves.

Back in my DJ days in the early 2000s, many of us in that business put all of our CDs into those slim sleeves allowing us to carry around so much more music. I still had the insert and back art so I always knew the contents. I haven’t really considered doing this for my movies but as space starts to shrink, and it’s shrinking, this is a terrific idea. So consider me trigger free from this video 😂

This solution to space limitation issues isn’t for me, but for people who don’t mind it, I’m happy for you. I’m too much of a sucker for keeping things in their original form as they were when brand new. I’m probably OCD in that regard. I’d also fear discs getting cracked or scratched (yeah, I know-care goes a long way, but you don’t know my luck with this kind of thing). I also wonder if ringwear could eventually become an issue. I don’t mind curating my collection, getting rid of/selling duplicates on lesser formats, if need be. And even becoming more selective, only buying what I know I will watch is something I’ve been more conscientious of lately in order to keep my collection from growing too crazily.

I can see a limited use for the sleeves, if you need to store the cases/packaging in a separate space and keep the actual discs somewhere else for easy access (where you presumably have limited space). But for me, yeah, there's no way I'd be throwing anything away - there goes much of the value if you ever need or want to sell some of them - so for me this would just be having to find extra space somewhere else, which would also preferably be somewhere not subject to temperature extremes, especially here in a humid climate.

I converted about 700 of my CDs to sleeves in 2008. I am just about finished putting them back into jewel cases. I was noticing ring impressions on some of my tray cards and booklets. I was also doing my DVD/Blurays but my wife was complaining that it is not easy to browse movies this way. So back into case they went too. We just moved into a larger house a couple of months ago so this helps for space.

I'm also buying those sleeves from Denmark. They really are great! I don't have a lot of space to begin with, and I'm also collecting video games. So I'm displaying the games and putting my movies and music into sleeves. It's a never ending project as I'm also upgrading DVD's to BR/4K when possible. But I'm sure when it's all done, it's gonna be awesome! I've also begun thinking about putting games in sleeves, just because I've been feeling that I don't want any bookcases anymore. But we'll see. The cases of music CD's I have just throwed away, and some I gave away. But movie cases I'm keeping. Just putting them into boxes and storing down in the basement's storeroom.

I recently began the daunting task of sleeving all 2,000 of my DVDs, and I really am having a good time revisiting some of the discs. It even refreshes the look by getting them out of the dirty old cases. Ultimately I plan on repurposing a dresser drawer, turning it into a card catalog of sorts. A lot of work, but I figure it’s the most attractive and practical solution over all. Everything consolidated into one unit and made to look like another piece of furniture. Thanks again for the suggestion!

I did this exact thing back in 2010 when I was moving back to the US from abroad... I eventually went back to the cases for a couple of important reasons... I couldn't find specific movies very quickly. Also, resale is almost impossible when you do this. So don't do it unless you don't care about the resale value of your collection. I did start cutting a few of the snapper cases, but it got messy ugly. So, I ended up not doing the rest.

Yeah this is reminding me of the mid 2000s when we all held our CDs and DVDs in those zip up binders, but around 2014 I found it was easier and better to just transfer all my discs back into their original hard cases for storage, packing, resale, and nostalgia. I understand the storage space dilemma, but I don’t want to go through the inevitable “ah I just want to put these all back in the original cases” in a few years again.

I've been doing this for a few years now, it was either reduce the size by removing the cases or getting rid off a lot of my collection. Once I have them in the plastic sleeves I then put them in large plastic storage containers which lock shut and I put a few silica gel packets in the large boxes for a little extra protection. In the large plastic containers I can flick through the movies and pick something out to watch

I'd like to see a hard slim case that holds the art like those sleeves with a spindle. Essentially like CD singles cases so it's rigid, & doesn't scratch the disc like the plastic & paper sleeves do. Yeah I want deep jewel cases, but that suits me & my scratch paranoia more.

I have a huge collection over 3000+ titles. I have 11 big Billy bookcases which could hold them all but I finally ran out of wall space for more shelves. My walls are covered with IKEA. Initially I was very much against sleeves but 3 months ago I decided to give it a shot - I really had no other option if I wanted to keep collecting and still maintain my movie shelves somewhat organized. So far it has worked out absolutely fabulous. If you use your imagination you can make your shelves look really awesome with sleeves. The key point is: you don't have to sleeve everything! For example I would never sleeve my Criterion Collection (which I own over 150 titles), but that doesn't mean I can't sleeve something else! Have some slipcover blurays here, some regular case blurays there, some special boxes between and then place sleeve boxes besides them - imo with imagination you can make your shelves look as good as any movie collection and you can save so much valuable shelf space at the same time. But the bad news is: if you are like me, constantly buying more and more, even sleeving won't save you forever. I guess at that point I really have to start thinking about curating :D

Been doing this now after getting stressed with my collection and all the movies piling up. I have a smaller curated shelf of movies I actually really like and then these sleeves in the tarifold box underneath for anything else. The box is a bit pricey for what it is, but seems to hold up really well and looks great and fits these exactly. Have 2 boxes now. Also was able to swap out cheap blue cases for the nicer clear ones on my shelf for any boutique release that got sleeved. Slip cases/rigid boxes are in storage if they came with the release so not losing out. Flipping through the box feels just like flipping through records in a crate. Also made custom sleeve inserts for the Bond collection as the cases that came in broke easily and barely held the discs in place and provided no info on the movies.

The best ones are the double disc versions from T3L. Its the same as the quadruple one you show but has only two pockets so it works for storing single disc or double disc, and you get more in a pack It does save a hell of a lot of room and you don't need to fold the covers over. Even if you do, they don't get that hard crease that you're giving them for the single disc sleeves. Having said that, I do mostly use them for regular standard blurays or DVDs to make room for all the collector's editions I now get.

After your first video I decided to go this route and I love it! I have two long bins that sit right next to my 7" records and now I can flip through my movie collection just like I do when I'm picking out a record to listen to. The boutique releases get to stay on the shelf, but everything else gets a sleeve. The space that physical releases take up are a big reason why so many people immediately ditched their collections when streaming took off (myself included), and now its basically a non issue. It seems like so many people in this niche base their entire personality around what is displayed on their shelf.

I dove into Tarifolds (DVDs and Blus) over the summer, along with some internal protective sleeves. I've really loved this for sleeving up my "burner" discs - anything that's got two or fewer discs, is not on something that looks like a boutique. So, anything from Criterion to Kino to Warner Archive still stays in the boxes for now. Same with all the 4Ks for now, even the bland, empty boxes. I also don't de-sleeve Warner snapper cases - and oddly enough, that makes these things (always the bane of my storage, going back twenty years) kind of a fetishized, collectible thing? I never thought I'd look at my Big Red One or Night Shift DVDs with the same eye I give to, like, Vinegar Syndrome or Impact. All of this might change in the future, of course, but for now it's helped me declutter about 1200 discs into cases. I have a Container Store near me and over the summer I picked up about five of these "media boxes" -- I like them fine, though the lids don't fit all that great. What's great is that they are rigid, stackable, and store about 300 or so (Tarifolded) discs per box. As I'm very much out of room, the stackability is preferred over the flexible/fabric and plastic crates for me. Here's a link: www.containerstore.com/s/office/craft-hobby/iris-media-storage-box/12d?productId=10009241

I live in a studio so I've very limited space. My VHS collection is in the closet but my discs are outside. I use those 336 discs carrying cases for most of my collection especially DVDs. Most of the boxed sets get to stay intact. I give away the cases, put the sleeves apart in a box and the discs in the carrying cases. This has freed up a lot of space. Your method looks great too and you keep the sleeves out to see. Good project and cool video Heath!👉😃👈

When CD/DVD/Blu-rays/4k Discs are purchased they are housed in a protective environment (Cases) for a reason: when seated in the center hub proper, the bottom of the disc is touching nothing - there is 1/16" or less of space between the disc bottom and the case for absolute no touching on anything, the top too, for those older 2-sided DVD discs. Slim/Ultra-Slim DVD cases or CD cases also offer the same protection, while saving more horizontal space. It will work! It will work!

You probably also know that discs are stacked one on top of the other, dozens tall, when they're manufactured. The idea that nothing touches the playing surface isn't real. They're touched the moment they're made, and then frequently touched during packaging as well. This method is safe and saves more space than slim cases while also preserving the artwork, for those that care about such things.

@@CerealAtMidnight Good point. However when we receive the discs, they are smudge, finger-print, and scratch free in their safe and secure cases, artwork with side sleeve or booklet. Your viewers may prefer the alternate choice of 5mm wide ultra-slim cases which fit all discs. (Advertised as 4mm, but closer to 5mm). That's about 3 cases to 1, standard is 14mm wide. They also have literature clips on left panel to hold inserts. Purchased from LDBMart on Ebay. For the snapper Warner Brothers cases, I keep them as is because I like them, easier to open.

The hack that i use that has been helpful has been double or triple blu-ray cases. If you have 2 films say for example dead snow 1 and 2 you take the 2nd film and flip the artwork inside out and put it inside the case facing the opposite way from the other films artwork. So you can house 2 films in 1 bluray case.

I sleeved all of my DVDs over the last couple years. Like you Heath my collection had invaded most of the house and something had to be done but I didn't want to get rid of any films. With streaming becoming the dominant viewing option who knows what titles are going to be available to watch in the future. I actually bought three 4-drawer cabinets from Ikea and put in some plexiglass dividers so I have four rows of sleeved DVDs in each drawer. I went from having walls and walls of DVDs to having everything (literally thousands of DVDs) currently in 4 drawers with another 4 to expand into. As for those Warner snappers I cut some and hated it afterwards and have been trying to replace them. I have kept all of those on a shelf together because as you said they don't fit in the sleeves. You can find many of them in newer non-snapper releases if you want to replace them but I'd advise not cutting because I lost some text and whatnot trimming them to fit. I too get that this isn't for everyone but this is really for the people who have truly run out of room. If you aren't out of room then don't worry about this but for those whose home and life was/is being overrun by physical media we needed a viable option and this really is it.

For now I'm keeping them in a banker's box, which I've used as storage for a while, but I'm open to other/better options. I'm not sure I'm to the point of using them on any Blu-rays or 4Ks though. I definitely wouldn't damage the artwork/special packaging on anything. I'd just compromise, and keep the space on my shelves for those.

I went with this idea for my CDs years ago, as I simply despise the plastic jewel cases. So I bought a vinyl sleeve brand that I cannot recall, getting a large quantity of, and I felt they were good protection, fitting the artwork and disc. I found the most practical way to store them was buying the Really Useful Box product, which was just the right dimension to fit them in, plus they are very sturdy and stackable. But, as with the same scenario with DVDs and Blu-rays, I would suggest using index cards with tabs, that are alphabetized, as you will need some such way to more easily access them, as you have no spine of which to view the titles. I have done this, and would consider trying a similar arrangement with my Blu-rays (I no longer have DVDs) and Tarifold looks to be the right product to do that. I think organizing them in binders might be another good way to find your titles easier to find.

I have the same problem but the solution I took for the past 15-20 years was to store my media in 7mm blu ray and dvd cases as opposed to the normal 14mm so I get 2-for-1 space wise. I shun the hi-swag collectibles and try to keep my collection content as disc-based as possible. I tried sleeves but the thing I didn't like about sleeves was that they're not readable from the spine. Just like you I don't have a solution for snapper-cases yet so I just leave them be for now.

I already did this with all of my CDs and DVDs (except the bigger box-sets and WB snapper cases). I don't think I'll open up/fold the snapper cases, it's just too bulky as it is and won't work well in the sleeves IMO. You don't really save any extra space with the bulky box-sets (or much at all) so I won't do that for bigger box sets. I'm doing it with Blu-ray releases now and plan to order a lot more of the sleeves. I'm out of space, too. I'd rather have my limited editions/collectors editions on display and just sleeve the standard editions like this because of how much storage space I have. These really are a great solution, I find myself now flipping through them like the sleeves are records - using the bins designed for these.

While it's gonna trigger some - unless you are blessed with free space in your home (that your SO is willing to give up) - sleeves are my go to option. Nowadays if I find a blu ray release that isn't special, I just sleeve 'em. Currently have at least 50% of my blu rays in sleeves (collection over 2,000 at this point), to the point where I feel I have control over my collection now.

Its not for me, but I do think alot of people could benefit from these sleeves. Basically, I got rid of most of my DVDs by buying expanded Blu-Ray/4K cases so I could fit the DVD disc in with the Blu-ray/4K discs. As to the DVD Cover/Insert/slip?? I kept them of course. Gallon bags from Wal-Mart work well. Just stuck them in drawers after bagging them. Not sure I really need to keep the DVD art, but for now I will.

Appreciate the idea. This will help me consolidate the old DVD collection that is taking up space. Looks like Amazon is still cheaper even with the 15%, but I get that not everybody has Amazon. And it's only like a $2-3 difference. Tarifold seems pretty cool, my only complaint is they are charging $21 for a 10x6 "handmade" cardboard tray...lol...but a simple solution is just not buying it.

With the snapper cases from the late 90's, all you need to do is remove the plastic. Then place the disc inside a disc sleeve and place that disc sleeve back into the snapper (which is now just cardboard).

I like the idea. Need to think about it more at least for the movies. I think the cd sleeves would be better in my eyes if you did not have to flip down the back tray sides. Maybe they will make them a tad wider to make the back paper lay flat instead of folding the sides down.

I'm really NOT a fan of putting in sleeves but preserving the covers like this is so much better than everything else I've seen... going to give it a try for my DVDs. It seems T3L won't export to the UK which is annoying but at least (after some problems) I've found them on AmazonUK

I know im late to the game but you can remove the cardbord from the snapper cases undamaged. Looking at the back of the DVD, "snap" the top trim up, and the "snap" bottom trim down. It looks weird because of the holes that hold it to the plastic but it is all in one piece w/o cutting.

Yes, you can take the cases apart, but the cardboard portion is still too large for any sleeve on the market.

I found the cheaper sleeves that seem not as great as the tarifold brand are bigger and can hold these snapper case cardboard covers perfectly and have held up well for me. They still do the job and they have an adhesive on the top ends to fold and hold in securely. But I only use these for the snapper covers.

I have to wonder - and if Tarifold is reading these comments it would be nice to hear from them - why does a blu-ray sleeve cost more than a DVD sleeve? It is the same material, presumably, and blu-ray cases are actually smaller so they should be cheaper to produce. I won't hold my breath on an answer, especially seeing how they can't keep them in stock apparently. But I would be curious to hear how they justify that price difference.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight Жыл бұрын
I've wondered the same thing. I figure it's because Blu-ray is more niche and they probably sell less of them. Maybe we can get an answer, though to your point, that's not something I expect them to address.

But what about the empty cases? general recycling facility's/curbside won't take type 6 plastic, so unless you can find a specialized company that takes then what are you doing? just wondering

I used to work in Blockbuster years ago and due to some new hair-brained company rule, we had to ditch hundreds (if not thousands) of the black DVD cases! The manager was all for ditching them with the normal rubbish collection but I suggested that we donate them to the many Charity Shops in the town to avoid sending them all to landfill. I took hundreds of them round to the all the Charity Shops and most were happy to receive them saying that they would bundle them up in tens and sell them for a quid or something. They thought they'd be ideal for people with broken cases and the like, so it was a win/win situation - the best of all situations, I think you'll agree! Ah, the happy memories of 'Blockbuster Days' come flooding back...

Since your first video 9 months ago, i searched something that worked for me. I found that Magazine backing board with bag (just like the comics) works great as i can lay flat the dvd insert and i buy a cheap cd comfort holder for the discs. They go into a magazine box that you can stack. Bulkier yes, but cheap and convenient for me :)

Do you know what type of plastic the sleeve is made from? As an LP collector I know some plastics can off gas and damage discs over time. I assume it may be the same with DVDs & blu-rays.

I don't, but it's worth pointing out that off-gassing with DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K cases is already a huge problem. A lot of these movies are shipping straight from the distributor with greasy discs.

I've been prioritizing cases without slipcovers first, but I'll probably be starting on those soon. The slipcovers will probably go in a box because they don't fit inside the sleeves and the sleeves are too large to fit in the slipcovers. Maybe I should sell some of them so they're bringing some joy to people.

It's funny, I'm not a stickler about a lot of things most collectors are sticklers about...but I just can't behind doing this with my collection. I won't knock it. It's a logical solution to space saving, but for me if my stuff in just slipped into a sheet of plastic and stored in a box, what's the point? While the most important part of collecting physical media is the, duh, media itself. For me a big part of it is the display of said media. When a portion of it is stuffed into a box, that defeats the point. By that point I may need to consider getting rid of some of my collection. I think this a genuinely good idea for people who don't want to part with some of their collection but need to clear up some space, but for me it ain't it, lol.
