Anyone reading this with similar back issues (disk herniation in L4-L5 and L5-S1) keep working at it. The adjustments from a chiropractor make it less painful to excersize and strengthening the core is key. I've started taking supplements to promote disk health which I believe have also helped. It's been 7 months for me since my injury so it takes time and PAITENCE but don't give up! Every morning do your excersizes even if they hurt, stay active and don't let depression drag you down because it will try. Take 15 minutes every hour and just walk as much as you can, try to stretch out and don't let your back get stiff. Stay hydrated! That's one change I've made in the last month that has helped a ton. I hope someone gets something out of this comment. Good luck yall and don't give up

@jasonsommers3020
@jasonsommers3020 2 жыл бұрын
@@neihgnot8320 stretches that worked well for me and that my physical therapist told me to do are simple yoga stretches, I'll post some links in a separate response. Excersizes that seemed to help the most were planks, side planks, (these took time to build up to) push ups, lunges, squats and walking as far as I could every day. The big thing is to pay close attention to your body and have complete control during the excersizes so you don't make the problem worse by poor posture which is what I did in the beginning. Surgery is an absolute last resort.. I would suggest finding a good chiropractor who will coordinate with a good physical therapist to instruct you on exactly how to do these excersizes. Chiropractor will make the pain manageable while a physical therapist will help you build up the support your spine needs to let the disks heal. If you can only afford one (I could only afford one most of the time) I personally advise the physical therapist.

BEST thing to do is get in with a physical therapist that understands body bio-mechanics and IMBALANCE issues. My hips were so tight I was literally tearing apart my new S-1 and L-5 fusion just by merely walking because of my are hips so tight. I would twist at the L-5 area when I walked. I got that corrected via PT and the leg pain caused by the L-5 twisting vanished over 3-4 weeks.

PLEASEEEE HELP MEEE. I’m on the verge of giving up and losing my life. I’m 23 I’ve had a left hip replacement at the age of 18 because I’ve suffered no hip growth since the age of 6. My entire life I’ve had an unbalanced body and I’ve always limped to my left side due to shortening which may explain my l5-s1 disc buldge. Everyone that sees to have this problem is seems to have some form of motion. I physically can’t walk. I’ve been bed bound since the start of lockdown in February it’s almost been 10 months going to a year. No healthcare has been helpful and half the time they couldn’t see me such a bad time. I’ve been to a and e over 50 times and had many stays they’ve done everything and said there’s no symptoms of everything I’ve had to fly to a different country to get this diagnose which was extremely painfully impossible. When I have pain I can’t move an inch, shift, sleep turn let alone stand or walk. Lost complete mobility over my left leg and I try so hard when I’m not in pain to move or do any exercise that might help my hospital has given me over 10 addictive medication for the past eight months avoided to take as much as I can but I’m very dependent on this includes morphine diazepam pregbalin Oralmorph. My health is deteriorating. My pain is a sharpppp stabbing spazzing pain that goes to my groin especially and down my thigh hip and butt. Writing on here and begging for help is the last thing I thought I’d do. But seen some comments and how long people have actually suffered scares me because I really hoped there was a solution. Can someone please let me know if any advice or help or anything they’ve done or used or tried that helped. My email is ab2021mo@outlook.com I’d be grateful.

These are the same symptoms that I have equally on both sides. Had l4/l5 fusion a year and a half ago but never fully healed. Original problem is gone but had these new symptoms progress. Started having problems urinating before surgery and after surgery. I think it started when they put me on pain meds but it’s gotten worse. Just started physical therapy and I’m gonna do these at home also. If this don’t work, they’re gonna fuse l5/S1, like they were going to originally but insurance company didn’t agree to it at the time. Now gonna have to do surgery all over again. Makes you wonder why even have insurance. I’d still be working if they would’ve done right the first time.

I got some MRI Results: Physiologic lordosis of the lumbar spine. Normal signal of the vertebrae and discs with the exception for desiccation of the disc L5/S1. Mild disc height loss at L5/S1. Small anular tear at the disc L5/S1. At the L5/S1 level there is a left paracentral disc herniation leading to comression of the left S1 nerve root in the lateral recess. Normal width of the lumbar spinal canal. No evidence for recent or remote vertebral fractures. No significant facet joint arthropathic change visible. What if the disc herniation is pressing on the S1 nerve (L5-S1). I can't stand on my left tip toes but I can on my right side. I also walk with a slight limp on my left side. All the pain associated with it from 2 months ago is gone. Just this weakness is happening. getting the testing and seeing the doctor is becoming a very lengthy process. Thinking of doing an EMG. The first and the second set of exercises seem like they contradict each other since they bend your spine in opposite directions. If you have a bulging disc that bulges outward, wouldn't the first set of exercises compress your spine in that direction even more and cause more pressure on either side of the bulge? What's the reasoning behind the first set?
@MarkTulloch
@MarkTulloch Жыл бұрын
Correct. Think about it. It closes the gap and reduces the bulge. If you go the other way, the bulge comes out more. Counter intuitive, but the MacKenzie method as it is known works.

I have tried the exercises and I have a couple of questions: 1- The exercise at 4:00 gives me pain in my lower back (exactly where the issue is, L5 S1) what kind of indication is that? am I doing it wrong, or is it supposed to hurt in some cases? 2- The exercise at 3:22 gives me a pain in my knee, I was able to do it for a week but after that my knee joint started to hurt, so I stopped it. Is it possible I was doing it wrong or I was pressuring too much. I have tried the core exercise at the end of the video and it was useful. Thanks.

@@freestylebully4849 Yes, mine is the same - no leg pain either. Same type of problem with a herniated disc and the reason I found this video for exercises. I was getting really bad pinching in the lower back, which was very painful and debilitating to the point I couldn't even walk for a few minutes. This has now stopped as a result of the first exercise in this video. I wouldn't recommend doing sit ups or twisting type exercises, as it will just aggravate the injury more. I also wouldn't recommend the other exercises in this video though, as I personally found they aggravated my hips, but that's just my personal experience with them. I was doing lots of sit ups to keep really fit and I think this was what made it really bad. So, the arching back extension as mentioned, seems to be the best for this type of injury. As my disks are worn it won't completely heal, but I can now manage the pain. Hope this helps.

I have a 1cm broad based right side bulge. The hell I have been in for 6 months. I have done everything, meds, physio, ice, heat, chiropractor, massage, dry needling, cupping I even bought an inversion table. When it was at its worst I couldn’t sit for even 5 seconds I would sleep on my floor for 2 hours a night. All I could do way lay on the floor all day. I got extremely depressed and almost got hooked on OxyContin because of the pain. All I had to look forward to was my next pill. I couldn’t go out be with my wife or play with my daughter, I had no life. I’m probably %80 better now i take 6km walks everyday now. I still can’t sit sit pain free and have to use a roll I’m my car or it’s torture. Unfortunately I’m a field tech and I drive 80,000km per year. I go back to work in 3 weeks I have no choice I’m out of money. I feel like I’ll never get that last 20% back I want to get back to my active life again lifting weights and running. I’m so scared I’ll blow it out again. The pain was so bad the first 4 weeks I really thought about ending my life. The extreme pain I was in day in and day out and the 5 pills I was on really depressed me and screwed with my mind. I would just start to cry and ask way nobody could help me. The medical system was useless the only thing that helped was time. I hope I get the last 20 back I’m 44 and refuse to live like this the rest of my life.

@@freestylebully4849 don't be hopeless I know it hurts so bad you feel it will be like that forever but believe me it heals!!! I have L5 S1 bulge on the right side, had pain in my hip and right leg with NEVER ENDING electric shock waves and numbness down to my toes to the point I could not walk, then that passed and pain remained only in my back. Well now it's been 4 months and I can stand for a few hours and walk without pain for a few km. After the 3rd month it started getting better, the first 3 months were a nightmare. I took every day tumeric organic pills and omega 3, also took aspirin, vit C, vit D and did massages with arnica oil mixed with essential oil of Gaultherie. I stopped the sugar coffee and black tea as much as possible. At the beginning I was listening to everyone and trying to do excercises and stretching, and it got worse every time. My own experience advice is to REST and let your body heal at least for 2-3 months, if you keep forcing and exercising all the time it will make the healing process longer. I tried walking 500m after 2 months when i thought i was feeling a little better and the pain got back worse than before, took me another month to recover. Just walk normally and do small activities inside the house if you are not able to do more. I was not able even to walk to the elevator. And avoid any movement that causes you pain, if you can only lay down, then only lay down and wait, the body is more intelligent than us, it heals by itself with rest. Be strong, I know it's awful and depressing! If you need any other information don't hesitate🙂. May God bless you and heal you

For the Piriformis stretch, what is your recommendation for obese patients/clients who cannot reach far enough to get their hands behind the hamstrings/around the knees to perform the stretches performed on the table? Simply to do only the seated stretches? Also, for all of the exercises/stretches demonstrated in this video which involve using the shoulders, if the patient/client has bilateral shoulder pain and limited ROM rendering those exercises/stretches very difficult or even impossible, what would be your recommendations for alternative exercises/stretches? Thank you!
@Bobskeez
@Bobskeez 2 жыл бұрын
For the piriformis stretch , I use a belt , bath towel, or resistance instead of reaching with my hands. The seated ones are very painful for me at the moment so I find laying down much more comfortable. As for shoulder pain with the press ups , face a wall perpendicular and put both elbows on the wall. Then slowly dip your stomach toward the wall relaxing your lower back , almost letting it sink into the wall until you find a good stretch and not pain. Hold that for about 3-5 seconds for about 5-10 repetitions. Learned that one in PT and it is nice for me as I’m someone who’s had shoulder surgeries. Hoped that help !
