watching on your website, going through all the magnetism videos, wish I had known about your site when the semester started, not so late in the semester .... better late than never :)

Thanks for this. If one section of the loop is fixed as a hinge, can you comment on what the torque of the loop around that hinge would be. I understand that F=mu×B=IABsintheta gives the torque of a free loop as here, but was just wondering if that would be the same torque around a section fixed as a hinge. I suspect not. Can you confirm this. The reason I ask is I'm doing a problem that asks to get an expression for such a torque (due to an unknown B field) around a fixed section as a hinge . And then asks to equate this expression to the torque due to the weight of the loop around that hinge. So we can find the target variable B. If you comment on this, I would really appreciate it.

Would there be torque on this circuit as long as the magnetic field is at an angle? Meaning the movement would be harmonic with damping until the circuit settles parallel to the plane, right?
@MichelvanBiezen

There will be a torque on the loop as long as the normal to the loop is not parallel to the magnetic field. I would not associate this with "damping".

will the torque make the loop turn?
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen Жыл бұрын
That is essentially what an electric motor is. (there are off course some design features needed to make it turn) but yes that is what makes it turn.

Sir the direction of torque due to both the forces would be in same direction?
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen 7 жыл бұрын
That is correct. The current loop is not in mechanical equilibrium.
