Pi is taking an hour from us! Let's get mad, then maybe drift off to soothing music to give ourselves that hour back.
Thank you to this tweet by @darrenglass and via @tweetsauce which not only reminded me that Pi Day was coming up and I should probably make a video, but from which I 100% stole the title and intro: / 1367978449864974337
This video is sponsored by Patreon Patrons like you! Special thanks to Ray Sidney, Pat Devlin, David Perryman, Andew Romaner, Andrea Bi Biagio, Jodi Vezzetti, Yana Chernobilsky, and David Smith, plus an extra thanks from my piano to Caleb Wright.
More thanks are here: vihart.com/thanks/
Happy Pi Day, everyone. I know it's been not just a long while but also a weird while, and I'm glad to see you're still here with me.

Hi David! I've gotten a lot of mileage out of your teachings, thank you :) (I still don't practice my scales or technique though, which you can probably tell... sorry!) I don't know why I thought that digit should be a 1 but it felt right at the time. I only remember the digits by the sound of their melody and since that's the last one I guess I just assumed. I think it's probably Pi that is wrong.

@@Vihart It's funny, when I memorized it, it was completely through the sound of the words of the numbers and the feeling of saying them, almost more kinetic/physical. It's really cool that you memorized them as a kind of solfege. Ha, you are doing just fine, don't worry about the scales, I am incredibly proud to have been your teacher. This was one of the first KZbin channels I found in middle school near 10 years ago now. Cool math stuff and internet nerd culture were key to who I thought I was. Years later and I’m a musician, living in that world, exploring solo vibraphone performance particularly right now. I’m trying to reconcile my current life and passions with those of my past, feeling they are very far from each other, the people they lead me to very different. It’s been a tension in me and I guess just this video was really nice as a combination of elements of my past and my present.

I've been playing piano for 9 years, found vihart about 6 years ago, struggling with who I am and what I want to be. I've wanted to code for my entire life but I'm unable to attend school because of mental heath issues. I picked up music composition about 8 months ago and I've been trying to compose songs since. just finished a new song hours before this video came out. I'm hoping I can get back into the swing of things and pull my life up off the floor and get on with things like everyone else.

Finding Vi in middle school was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Her videos have not only helped me get through boring math classes, but have helped me appreciate the beauty of math. I look back on middle school and high school math classes and the simplicity of them in retrospect, and I remember Vi’s videos bringing me joy and a new perspective on so many topics, and the explicit impact she’s had on my creative and scientific perspectives. Now I’m in college studying engineering and whenever I question if I really can do this, I rewatch her videos and I’m always reminded of the reason I love science and math, and the creativity that is inherently a part of both. Thank you Vi, from the bottom of my heart (Hart?), for inspiring me years ago, still inspiring me today, and inspiring me for years to come.

In fact I’m sure my mother must have shone her stuff to me. My mother who is dead now and has been for years, so I don’t think there’s anyone I could ask if I wanted to confirm it. And as I’ve gone though high school I realized that the jokes that she made about how much parabolas suck were starting to make sense. Because when I first heard that joke I don’t think I even knew what negative numbers were yet. It’s been nice to see this thing from my childhood continue to take on new meaning. Thanks, Vihart

I can't remember the exact one, but in one of your videos you made a quick comment about how being overtly anxious and preoccupied with your appearance and behavior in public settings could actually be social anxiety, which is a real thing and it's treatable. And in turn, you, knowingly or not, put a name to something that had been torturing my everyday existence. Something that i didn't know other people experienced and that i didn't know was a thing and that it could be countered successfully with professional help. I immediately began doing my own research, relieved to have finally found hope. Hope that this thing that cursed me for years and years could be defeated. It began a journey for me of learning about myself, mental health, and eventually seeking help, through therapy and medication, uncovering also the depression that it had evolved into after years of being untreated, and even a completely ignored ADD. And over time, i became better. It was tough, but each day I found I could be my better self, when i took care of my mental and physical health, and surrounded myself with a solid support system. The guy who used to contemplate driving off the side of the road is now the guy who would never dare to, because he knows he has so much to live for. And i can't help but think that perhaps if I hadn't sought help and trained myself in self care, if I hadn't sought treatment for my depression and anxiety, I might not have been able to survive this unprecedented assault on our entire generation's mental and physical health that we call a pandemic. I'm so happy to say that I'm still here. I know it's probably not accurate to say that you alone saved my life, Vi. But every so often, i still remember the exact moment i heard you mention social anxiety, and I'm so grateful for it. Because that moment started my journey in self-improvement and self care, and being nice to myself. Your thoughtfulness and creativity have been a catalyst in my life to become a better person. I absentmindedly play all your doodle games all over my notebooks. And I'll often even put your videos to go sleep, so much so that i have some bits memorized lol. I guess I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being exactly who you are supposed to be. Hope you had a lovely pi day. I don't know that you will ever comprehend how impactful your content truly is, how much it has enriched the life of millions, and what an incredible force for positive change that it is for this planet.

During my first three years of college, even though I wasn't intending to become a mathematician, I've just sort of... accidentally taken enough math courses to get a math degree? I didn't realize it until now because it never felt like work - it was something I'd grown to enjoy, mostly because of my amazing middle/high school math teacher and because of Vi. Anyway, long story short, I'm now majoring in electroacoustic music and math, and I'm hoping someday I'll be able to inspire people and help awaken their creativity and inquisitiveness in the same way Vi did for me. Thanks for a great pi day! Edit: listening to the soothing sounds of Pi, I was just reminded of one of my fondest memories from childhood. I'd spent a couple days watching and rewatching all your hexaflexagon videos, and decided to become a flexagation scientist. After hours of toil, I finally managed to invent the MIGHTY Dodecaflexagon. It was smaller than a dime because I had to fold the paper so many times, but I had invented a brand new flexagon and I felt like the Archimedes of twelve-year-old homeschooled math nerds.

Vi hart, you have always been the person I struggled and strived to be. I first found you 7-9 years ago and I always loved how you were a mixture of both math and arts. When i was younger I thought those were two completely separate worlds but you brought them together so easily. I think even now that is a lesson I keep forgetting as I still don't know how to integrate both sides harmoniously. But even though I am having those troubles, you have taught me so many things. And helped me tremendously. Like hexaflexagons has helped me be less socially awkward. I use them a lot as a way to start conversation with people pre-covid days. So as I write for these 30 minutes I just wanted to say how grateful I am to you. I think you are one of the reasons why my humour is as it is now. You made me love and appreciate math. You made me fall in love with a snail through 3 songs that I still listen to. You were a small corner of the internet that was not afraid to show who you are. "This world is of a single piece; yet, we invent nets to trap it for our inspection. Then we mistake our nets for the reality of the piece. In these nets we catch the fishes of the intellect but the sea of wholeness forever eludes our grasp. So, we forget our original intent and then mistake the nets for the sea. Three of these nets we have named Nature, Mathematics, and Art. We conclude they are different because we call them by different names. Thus, they are apt to remain forever separated with nothing bonding them together. It is not the nets that are at fault but rather our misunderstanding of their function as nets. They do catch the fishes but never the sea, and it is the sea that we ultimately desire." Universal Patterns (The Golden Relationship: Art, Math & Nature, Book 1), Martha Boles

@@pvic6959 objective theory driven take ahead, no bully - that music had less to do with pi than you (or the reader) might think. it had several 3, 4 or 5 note motifs whose shapes were indeed borrowed from pi's decimal expansion, but were then fitted into the c major scale. had she picked a different number base (not lower than 6 as to not reduce the number of notes) it would have sounded very similar. had she picked a totally different irrational number, like some square root, or e, or phi or so on, again in any base, it would have sounded very similar as well. it's just the sound of any major scale (didn't even have to be c). moreover most of the character of the song is given by the bass, which is improvised and as far as i can tell has literally nothing to do with pi. if on the other hand you had kept decimal pi and fitted it into a say phrygian scale you'd get a different song. blues scale - different song. pick the chromatic or whole tone scale - totally different song, and not nearly as pleasant. change the type of bass melody as well and you can craft any kind of sound you like, using pi just as a source of notes. having a lot of repetition and some bass certainly helps the song feel deliberate, because it is, but there are other "transcriptions" of pi online who just state the digits one by one using the same major scale conversion and they still sound "nice". again, that's just the sound of the major scale with random notes in it, there's almost nothing linking it to what pi actually means. which is absolutely fine as long as people understand it. to conclude, there certainly is art to this piece in my opinion as well, in its cvasi-mathematical construction, in its meaning and presentation, and in its partially improvised performance. and it does sound nice, although it's not quite my type. but it's vi doing the heavylifting, not pi.

i’m not even 5 minutes in and you have me almost in tears already. Vi, i’ve been a fan of yours since my 4th grade year. You’ve been my outlet when i was upset, my comic relief. You really don’t know how much just one of your videos has changed my life. youve helped me so much. through this quarantine i’ve returned to your videos day after day. when my cat passed and i needed a real smile through all the pain, i turned to you. Your videos have gotten me through so many bad times in my life. And so many boring math classes. I’m always drawing wind on my papers and reciting 20 digits of tau for my friends. You made math interesting. It’s now my favorite subject. I’d just like you to know that you’ve touched so many people far and wide. -a kid in alaska. *edit: i’d like to bring up the fact that i’ve taught most of my friends how to make haxaflexagons from you template and i made my whole family (12 people) mini flexagons for stocking stuffers this year. thank you so much vi for saving me with power of math and music.

I discovered this channel in 2015 during an honors math class I took during college. My professor asked us to watch some of your videos and do further research on a topic that hit us. After all these years, I can't remember which video made me fall in love with you and your channel, but I can remember laying in bed, smothered in the depths of my worst depression, and watching your videos. I often thought about changing my major to math because you made things make sense in a time where I honestly couldn't see the sense of what was coming in a hours time. It's been almost 6 years now and I didn't change my major too far; instead of going from Criminal Justice to Mathematics, I went from Criminal Justice to Victim Studies. What didn't change was the small love you put in my heart for math and its theory. Thank you for this video, in a way it's put a lot of this past year in perspective for me, especially since quarantine didn't really hit my area until March 14th and 15th. Thank you for all of this

Hi Vi! Was taking high school Calculus when I first saw your videos way back when and I always questioned why we never learned math in creative, almost allegorical ways. I loved the ways your colourful, playful language described concepts. These days, I'm a high school math teacher teaching Calculus and despite pressures to teach one way or another, you inspired me to approach my own teaching with that same playful and curious tone. I still sometimes go to your website and search up your improv piano. I've played it in my classroom before too! On a personal level, your microwave videos will always stick with me too. I input times like 1:99 all the time just to see what kind of modular arithmetic my friend's and family's microwaves feel like doing. These days I'm feeling a lot like the microwaves in those videos, with one minute that seems to just go on and on and on. Thanks for always providing another fresh angle on things, whether math, social justice, or our perception of time. Hope you're doing well.

Thank you Vihart for inspiring me once again. I never knew how much you affected me until I saw the shift in me finding the beauty of music and art in things seemingly unrelated. Now, I am studying to become an aerospace engineer and I am actually building spacecraft. Just 10 years ago, I remember watching your videos and that’s where my dreams were created. I saw someone who didn’t just talk about women being interested in STEM but someone who showed why it was interesting. I just got hired recently for my first internship, and I also became the student director of my satellite laboratory. I always wanted to be a vocalist, and you helped me realize that music connects to much more than my career. I hope you are doing well, and thank you.

I first saw your videos in middle school. At that time, I wanted to be a mathematician -- I was always good at working with numbers and problem solving, so I thought that was the path I was supposed to follow. Your videos helped me see a different side to math: one that is beautiful, and creative, and fun. I'm no longer on the path to be a mathematician; in fact, it's debatable whether I'm on any path at all, but I still love the side of math, and of the world, that you show off. I remember finding this channel almost 7 years ago, back when i was 10. I had started losing my love for maths, having had a "is this it?" moment when i realised what we learned was repetitive, boring, lackluster. I remember first stumbling across your channel and being amazed at how maths can not only be used for more than just the basic operations and some algebra, but also how *beautiful* it can look (and sound!) when applied. My interest was rekindled and I now currently study a levels in maths and further maths while hoping to take mathematics as a minor in university. My passion for all things maths is now stronger than ever and I love learning newer, more obscure concepts and finding that they too are interesting and beautiful in their own way. This channel will always have a huge part in my heart because while it was the catalyst that took me to where I am now, every video, old and new, has never failed to be different, be interesting, be *vihart*. Happy Pi Day ViHart! Thank you for this video. Since some commenters are opening up a bit here, I guess I will too. I discovered your videos in high school, and would watch alongside all the other educational KZbinrs at the time (Vsauce, Numberphile, etc.) I was never that inspired or interested in math, but your videos definitely peaked my interest and allowed me to appreciate mathematics more than I had before. The real bulk of me getting into your videos though was my freshmen year of college. Im a writer, and the subjects you'd talk about and how you speak in your videos (your cadence / rhythm/ pacing, etc) inspired some poetry around that time, but especially inspired the voice of a character in a short story I was working on then, that desperately needed a strong voice to drive the narrative. The short story is shelved for now and ive moved on to other projects, but your videos were a big inspiration for that character, to the point where whenever I get the work finished / published, I want to dedicate it to you. So, thank you for not only being an inspiration to all the future mathematicians and musicians out there, but one to a silly writer like me, too :)

Thank you for coming back. I've missed your brain. Have you considered a sequel your 12 tones video for microtones... I would love to hear what you can do with 22 notes per octave or 24 or 31 :) love this video. Thanks again.

This has me in tears. Thank you vihart for reminding us that math, and by extension this universe is beautiful. I have been watching this on a loop and I will continue to do so because it gives me peace. Thank you
