Hyperbola eccentricity = c/a > 1 (c always greater than a for hyperbola) Circle eccentricity = 0 Parabola eccentricity = 1 0 < Ellipse eccentricity = c/a < 1 (c is always less than a for ellipse) Therefore, hyperbolas are the furthest you can be from being a circle while still being a conic section
@sebastianw1980
@sebastianw1980 Жыл бұрын
You are all fools. The circle, in its perfect homogeneity, contains only itself. It is a failure of a shape, unable to comprehend or even imply anything else. This is why Ptolemy and Copernicus were fools. Uniform circular motion? I say: bah, humbug. The ellipse has two foci to the circle's pathetic one, meaning the ellipse implies two circles. This is better, but still ineffective to truly begin to hear the music of the celestial spheres. Next, take the parabola. It is similar to the ellipse in that it has two foci, but one of them lies at an infinite distance. This implies two circles of infinite radius, greater than any circles inscribed in merely finite place. This is reminiscent of the sphere of the fixed stars, long held as the finest example of "circular" motion like the idiotic Aristotle. If the parabola is more symbolic of the sphere of the fixed stars, then it must comprehend more of what we call circularity than the circle. Finally, ee can move onto the hyperbola. What is farther than infinity? For the second focus of the hyperbola rests at both infinity and negative infinity. This must be our truest understanding of circularity, for not only do the circles comprehend the motion of the fixed stars, but the selfsame focus represents the shape of the earth, which is a perfect reflection of the sphere of the fixed stars, ordered by the demiurge to give us hints as to the true nature of the universe. To argue this point is to reject the will of the demiurge, and labels you a common man not worth even the dirt you tread on.

I'm not sure if I'm interpreting the metaphor here correctly, but it seems as though this might be the end of the Pi Day series. Which is, on the one hand, scary; something which I quite literally grew up with is disappearing. But on the other hand, it's oddly reassuring. This series has done for me (and millions of others) everything that it could. Its work is - against all odds - complete. Maybe someday I'll make my own such series, and know that someday it too might achieve its goals. Thank you for everything, Vi.

@@plushloler - That's an odd take. You make it sound like Pi Day was constraining Vi, rather than it simply being an incentive for Vi. What makes you think it's the former and not the latter? As far as I'm aware, and I admit this involves some amount of conjecture, Vi is happy not making a living on KZbin and simply makes videos when inspired. Pi Day was once an inspiration and perhaps now it's not. Why would that suggest a new inspiration?

13 years... dang... This series is one of the longest things I've continually watched (on or off KZbin). This might not be the proper forum to express this, but I feel like a lot of my formative years were shaped by your videos. When I was in middle school, your pi videos inspired me to learn more about pi (and tau) which fostered a really persistent love of both math and science that carried through my high school years. In my junior year of high school, you released On Gender, which was probably the first major step in me realizing I was non-binary. Realizing both the ways in which my experience matched yours - as well as the places where our experiences differed - led me to question things about myself that I had taken for granted my whole life. There's not really any good way to properly thank someone for that kind of indirect action - you don't know me, and obviously I know those videos weren't made for me specifically. But they still had a big effect on me and I truly appreciate it.
@AnonyMous-pi9zm
@AnonyMous-pi9zm Жыл бұрын
On Gender was really the thing that opened my brain to the notion that other people can have a different experience than myself. With gender, with race, with liking or not liking mathematics or art or whatever. Sure, I knew that people were different, but I didn't have a framework for understanding those differences and how it impacts people. Vi implored me be empathetic to other people in a way that my upbringing never really fostered.

I think 4:44 implies that the reason the measurements come out to 12 digits is because, rather than the universe adjusting itself, Triangle's somehow been "eating" the tiny missing piece of pi out of the universe cone-style each time the Sciences make a measurement to mess with their results (and also to help themself become a circle to fulfil their own side of the bet, although that part doesn't work out).

What is the significance of 12 digits? According to google, which we all know to be infallible, It would take 39 digits of pi to measure the circumference of the observable universe to within the width of a hydrogen atom, and 63 digits to measure it to within 1 Planck length. Edit: ok, nvm. From the title it's obvious that's they are just saying that 12 videos is enough in this series, and that they don't want to keep making these videos.

Been a hard night, always nice for Vi to give us her yearly Pi-ramblings. Though, the real reason those pesky scientists always measured 12 digits is that they didn't use precise enough measurements, and they needed to keep their sigfigs in order! Also 5:40 Triangle has at _least_ 3 eyes

You know, I literally JUST found out about your channel about 30 minutes ago, and I came here to say: The timlessness of how your content was 10 to 12 years ago (as youtube reccomendations showed me as my introduction to you) all the way to today makes you an incredibly rare find in youtube nowadays and someone I really respect. It's gotten me enamored with your channel already. Now I'm arriving here at what appears to be the end of a series that has spanned for 13 years that some people here claim they grew up with and I can't help but feel some vague sort of "damn, I missed out" feeling. I mean, I'm 18 and I've been interested in math for forever, I WISH I knew about this channel that long ago. But oh well, can't live in the past I guess. I just wanted to say that, whatever it is that starts and ends, I'm living proof that what you built can blow people's minds even after it's over. So, whatever you do in the future, be yourself, and you'll always shine. It feels weird saying this as I've *just* discovered your existance, but thank you for being yourself.

I know it's meant to be a metaphor, but asserting that pi has 12 digits in the real world and that you have the science and evidence to back it up, and anyone who disagrees is like the annoying circle, especially in what i thought was an educational video super bothers me

Wait, is it really true that in the physical world, pi can't be measured beyond the 12th digit?

It only has 12 digits, how could you measure more things than there are?

it's true to some amount of digits that there's a limit to the precision of pi's measurable value, but I think vihart only chose 12 because she's done 12 (now 13) pi day videos

I’m going to say no, though 12 digits would be an insanely precise calculation. Let’s say we have a perfect circle, with a crystalline structure accurate to the atom. Atoms are about 100 picometers wide, so they are our limit to accuracy. There are 1E10 of those in a meter, so 10 digits of pi. To measure 13 digits of pi, we would need an additional 3 orders of magnitude, so our circle would need to be over 1000 meters around with precision down to the atom. However, we can measure pi indirectly through the physical constants, which we have extremely precise measurements of.

I also wonder if it’s a puzzle, as in: what system of mathematics is there where Pi isn’t irrational? And that would be a “universe” that uses a different definition of distance, something closer to a Manhattan distance
@TheBasikShow
@TheBasikShow Жыл бұрын
To accurately measure the circumference of the observable universe in Planck lengths, you need about 62 digits of pi. So, that’s an upper limit to the amount of pi that could even be measured in principle. To accurately measure the circumference of the earth in millimeters, a much more reasonable value, you only need about ten or eleven digits of pi. Twelve is more than enough. If using a high-tech laboratory with electron microscopy, accurately measuring a meter-wide circle will also need ten or eleven digits. So yeah, 12 digits is a reasonable limit for how measured a circle could be on Earth. Keep in mind, though, that the actual difficult part of measuring a circle in the real world is creating a perfect circle in the first place. All of this business about how much precision would be needed if we did have a perfect circle is just silly fun.

hi vihart, i just wanna say a few things 1. literally before i turned on this video, i found the pi that i bought for my birthday on the 11th and began to eat it (it's half of a pie so it's just one pi) i thought that that was a great coincidence 2. what the HEI-HEI is this video? of course i turn it on at nearly 3 am (PST) and it messes with my brain too much 3. I wanna also give you some appreciation. your fibonacci videos really stuck out to me as a way too curious and too smart 7 year old and they stuck with me for years until i somehow stumbled upon your channel again in early-2022 but got way into it in late 2022. being a silly little guy (and also very autistic), i soon binged a fair few number of your videos over the span of a couple of weeks, and started getting way too into fibonacci inspired drawings. from December 22-january 3 (2022/2023), i was in a mental hospital for another attempt, and drawing your pinecone thingies was waaay too much fun, especially when i went from 3-54 curves. eventually, i ended up going to-to-toe with a guy working there about your three utility problem (his solution was to have multiple lines running exactly parallel to each other) and discussing fibonacci and other stuff with the staff that i eventually put up seven pieces of paper for a beginner's guide to fibonacci for the staff to read. you would not BELIEVE the amount of adults who asked me if i figured out all the the maths (i was 17 at the time) 4. you're literally so cool!! reading your wiki page and finding out about your gender beliefs made me so happy about the representation (and the fact that they wrote your wiki page in they/them pronouns), and learning about the fact that you're considered a mathematician despite having a music degree makes me think maybe one day i can be awesome and cool like that even if i can't have the degree i desire 5. love your music videos :D doodle music and a song about a circle constant are my all-time favourites, and I've been able to teach several people about tau just by turning on your song. a lot of people are impressed with how you put the digits of tau into a scale so that the higher the number, the higher you sang youre amazing ❤❤❤
