Most rpi projects can be easily achieved with 1GB ram. That's why they don't release it, this way they can force people and even enterprises to buy a more expensive model
@EugeniaLoli4 ай бұрын
You need a minimum of 4 GBs these days to browse the internet, and 2 GBs to run a server, like Emby or Jellyfin. So it makes no sense to sell 1 or 2 GB versions anymore.

I don't understand why Raspberry Pi Foundation can't do similar to other tech companies and lower price on older pis. rather than release a Pi5 1GB model why not cheapen the Pi4 2GB model to take the place as an entry level full pi or how about for the 1GB pi5 take off what makes it cost more like the pcie port and maybe some other things and repackage it as a Pi5 A+ board

fwupd is a daemon for Linux distros to manage and update firmware in hardware devices. It's generic for all hardware, RaspberryPi OS has a specific tool for the RPi's, and what it means is that basic support has been added so that in the future generic ARM64 distros can install on the RPi and manage the firmware without Raspberry Pi's specific tools for the hardware.
@terrydaktyllus13204 ай бұрын
Firmware should never be updated automatically through some kind of daemon. Firmware is usually proprietary in nature and can be the difference between a piece of hardware working or just failing completely. It should be manually installed and tested first. Just because something does exist does not mean it should exist.
@ricardoaugusto23334 ай бұрын
@@terrydaktyllus1320, the fact that fwupd exists does not at all mean that firmware will be updated automatically. It means that there is an open source independent utility that can be used to update firmware removing the dependency on proprietary tools from the vendor.

During the Spring I stopped by a store we have around here meant for farmers, hunters, and anything a rural person might need, so naturally they have a gun shop. I went there to buy a pistol and the guy told me to go to this screen, mouse, and keyboard set up behind me and answer all the questions on it while he runs my background check and all that good stuff. When I went up to it I was pretty curious what was running it bc at first it did just look like nothing but peripherals like I mentioned earlier, but then I noticed behind the monitor a black, plastic case with the Raspberry Pi logo on it and realized that's what I was using. The Orange Pi Zero 2W has a 4GB version for just for a few dollars more than a Raspberry Pi 2W - it's a great little SBC, but not an option for most people in the Raspberry Pi ecosystem because they only know how to do stuff if someone makes them a step-by-step video. Stick an Orange Pi in front of most of them and say "put Linux on it" and they wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I've got a OrangePi5+, some Atomic PIs and BTT CB1s here. The OPi5+ is pretty good, AtomicPis easy since it's X86, but the problem is that the graphics drivers for nonRPis are typically not good in Linux. Made all the more infuriating by the fact that you put Android on them and they can do 4K60 video flawlessly while struggling to do 1080p30 in a browser in Linux. The Panfrost drivers for the RK chips works well if you can get it to actually work, but even then, getting browser video acceleration is a dice roll. What's good about the RPis is that they do the work and make the software work very well. OrangePi has typically 'made it work' and tossed it over the fence to let the community deal with the rest while they move on to the next shiny SoC. That's seemingly slowed down as the release of new high end SoCs has slowed down, but they don't seem to be putting in much more effort once the hardware is released.

fwupd is something that is part of Linux itself, the pi firmware updater was it's own 3rd party utility. Having raspberry pi support native on the Linux kernel vs having a 3rd party utility that runs on top alleviates heavy lifting for ARM64 itself. The Pi Foundation could stop developing the firmware updater tomorrow and now use fwupd and streamline updates to the pi regardless of your distribution. You could be running a custom version of Gentoo and as long as the kernel is new enough, you wouldn't need to switch to pi-os to receive firmware updates.

The tablet is rugged, with bright screen, works so well in bright sunlight, SIM card works too on Zorin. I paid for Zorin OS Pro and happy to reward a great company with their efforts. I also run Windows 11 on another tablet, a dell 7220. Will prolly put Zorin OS Pro on that in the future. @@terrydaktyllus1320 While that is generally true, you have to admit that the Pi ecosystem has very strong OS and software support where some of the other hardware does not. I'll have to look at the Orange Pi stuff, they have a pretty strong ecosystem, I just generally forget about them. Also, not everyone starts out as a Linux Genius, Pi reduced the burden to entry which seems to disgust a lot of Linux users. You need to remember that not everyone has the knowledge (myself included) to compile a new kernel and compile an OS. If the elitism puts people off, all of these cool little SBC die for lack of popularity. I can do some things, but a weak ecosystem makes it extremely hard and just puts me off (and most other people). You can't learn new things when the system gets in your way for the basic things. I'll say that it's easier for me to get things done and learn on an x86 system than some of the strange devices that use Arm. There are generally more people in the Pi community who will not only help with the issue, but explain what and why, which helps us learn.
