They take up as much space as the old micro cars. It is health and safety that has made cars enormous. They have to survive crash tests, side impacts and to do that have to be large. Odd bikes do not have these rules. My opinion is to remove some these safety rules and produce city cars for commuting that are small and do not take up space.

I live in Australia where these bikes along with all other three wheeled machines (two at the front or two at the back) are classed as motorcycles. In some states the traditional trike with two wheels at the back are able to be driven on a car licence but the Piaggio along with the Yamahas and Can Am Spyders require a bike licence which to obtain you must take the training course first. I once owned a Piaggio MP3 400 which was purchased hoping my wife would get the bug. She never did and it was sold. My observations about it where; in every respect it behaved like a motorcycle - it counter steered, it leaned and did everything else you can do on a bike but had the added stability of an extra wheel up front. The 400 had a good power band but most of the power seemed to come at the top end rather than across the band like the Suzuki Burgman. The Piaggio could hold its own on the highways at 110km/h the maximum speed in Australia. I think even though this bike can be ridden in UK on a car licence, it would be advisable for a rider to take the motorcycle training course. One thing that definitely could be improved is the useless screen it is too small to provide any wind protection. I rarely used the locking mechanism except to show off at traffic lights but I could see it being great for people worried about holding up a heavy bike but as you found out you need to make sure the bike is fully upright because the wheels will lock in whatever position you're in.
@redangrevival Жыл бұрын
To be honest I think it is sensible to need a bike licence to ride one of these. However good that they are so accessible to car drivers! Overall they are quite impressive, and so practical as well. Hopefully it can get more people heading towards motorcycling 👍
@IndigoJo4 ай бұрын
@@redangrevival Possibly if more people take to them and they prove to be a danger, the automatic tricycle entitlement will be removed or modified, most likely for new passes rather than from existing licences (the same as how C1 was removed in the late 90s, leaving earlier passes, like me, with "grandfather rights"). Also, although you can legally ride them without training on a car licence, many insurers apparently require CBT.

Nice vid Gus. I rode the first MP3 - a 250 - for a while, then the 400, then the 500. Commuted Colchester to South London a few years. Was great. Loved them and are fantastic machines for beginners. Very stable. Even if you slide all 3 wheels on a wet roundabout, you can hold it up, because of the tripod effect. You can throw them around or cruise along. Very comfortable and steady. Very practical with tons of storage, especially with a topbox as well. I used to say they put the "fun" in "functional". They weren't rideable on a car licence in my day. They widened the front wheels and added a couple of things like the footbrake to make it technically count as a trike. It is bonkers that people can ride them without a bike licence, though. Complete ignorance from the authorities. Though stable, they ride just like a scooter or bike and nothing like a car or a trike, but they are treating it like it's a trike re. licencing. Mad. The suspension locking is only for parking really. If you do that while rolling toward the lights or whatever, then a wheel drops into a hole, you will get tipped off. Also, when you twist the throttle to unlock, there is a moment when it unlocks that feels unstable and can surprise you depending on the road surface. I think it would be a terrible idea for people with some lack of physical ability, for example, to count on that locking function helping them out. Fantastic for parking though as you can do stuff like lock the suspension, get off and roll it into a small space pushing from behind. They aren't cheap, though. The extra linkages are something else to go wrong. It used to need steering bearings replaced more than you'd think. It has an extra tyre to wear obvs. Your question about bus lanes is interesting given them being legally 'a trike'. The ones I rode *weren't* trikes - you had to have a bike license - so were fine in bus lanes. Not sure on the modern config. I think it would be crap for them not to be allowed, but maybe that's a downside of the silly 'legally a trike' thing. I can't imagine you'd get stopped for it, but can imagine, if you got 'in trouble' for something done in a bus lane they might try and add that technical offense to whatever charges they brought.

I’m sure it’s slightly different with the two wheels but this isn’t a spider or something that’s a fake motorcycle style car. You have to lean into curves and balance when it’s slow. The nicest feature is being able to lock the wheels and let it stand on its own. I love this thing

Finished my trip with a quick run up the national new road at motorway speeds and again,it was smooth and plenty enough power. Quite looking forward to riding it again tomorrow. I had a pillion passenger for the duration of my trip,and she was very comfy and i sometimes forgot she was there due to her leaning right back on the back storage box that was fitted on my model...very cruiser like more so than scooter like. Id seriously consider buying one...found the locking system very easy to use and it saves hoiking the bike up onto the stand.

I've owned a Piaggio MP3 500 LT for four years and although I've enjoyed riding it on a car licence, the insurance has been much higher, without a full motorcycle licence. The servicing is also expensive and required frequently, due to the 1800 miles between rear type changes, which is not a quick or cheap job. When it comes to changing the headlight bulb, the entire front end must be stripped for a single bulb replacement (£220). I wouldn't buy another MP3, I've paid the equivalent retail price twice over. Screws require constant re-tightening. Approved MP3 MOT centres are few and far between.

As a late bloomer transitioning from a car, I thought long about the MP3. Unfort'ly only the MP3-530 is available where I live. The sheer weight and power (not to mention the cost) almost nullifies its "stability" appeal for novice riders like myself. And the closest Piaggio servicing outfit is a good 75km away. The stars were simply not aligning for me.. The "car license" aspect never made sense to me, either. If safety nudged us towards a trike, why take short-cuts in developing skills, especially with the MP3-530 weighing a whopping 617lbs (280kgs)! So I got regular motorcycle training, and bought myself a very decent 300cc Kawasaki. I'm absolutely loving my 2-wheeler. My usage is admitedly lighter than most folk, as I don't use it for daily commutes. At a motorcycling show recently, one guy told me he rode the MP3-530 to Key West, Florida on the US Route 1 (the highway made famous in Schwarznegger's movie TRUE LIES), and the trike was rock solid in 70km/h winds. That may well be true, I had no reason to doubt him - But that sort of uber-stability is simply not a priority for me, not right now. I'm happy getting a few years of real motorcycling experience under my belt.. Perhaps an MP3 will appeal to me when I'm closer to retirement, and want to have fun with less worry about stability (and gear shifting). Maybe Piaggio will offer more MP3 choices where I live in a few years as well!

I spent 1 hour sitting and checking the weight in lock/unlock mode, did 10 circles around the rental in busy city center and went to my destination 50km away via motorway :D .. im not sure how I survived to be honest, considering im also in mountain region, and the wind is ALWAYS there and just changes direction as i tried to keep doing 100kmh and avoid truckers pushing me from behind like 'cmon, lets go..'.. Twisted my wrist twice trying to hold it upright due to leaning it 'a bit' to 'practice' .. also dropped it once while trying to stop(lock button wasnt responsive), and it was uphill with an incline and gravel and incoming car.. thankfully they helped me pick it up(fell info bushes lol).. I dreaded riding it for several days at the time(due to fcking hills and no flat roads and highway after 500m..) .. but again, I survived :) after 500km I got more confidence.. and after 100km+ on twisted mountain roads learned proper balancing into corners with weight shifting. Also it can go 150kmh.. not mega acceleration after 100kmh - but still faster than 80% of cars around here. And locking mechanism is just magic.. any parking in or out - you can just push it forward/backwards and use handlebars so it stays upright.. overall im really satisfied and enjoying it.. Planned to get Zero DS electric one, thats push an go(no clutch) , but that ±100km range max on highways is just lol.. and to get extra battery its 2-3k..lol. so im actually considering getting myself piaggio now, but 530 to get more power, since they're all same 280kg.. but yeah, without moto experience, you should go through some minimum training or practice for at least few hours to build up muscle memory/reflexes(mainly for suspension lock). visually, of course its on the ugly side, moto guys dont consider you relevant, and everyone tries to overtake on highways(since youre a big scooter..) .. haha, sorry for the rant, anyways its mega fun(+ storage is extra nice)

Yes definitely worth it. However I would go for a more hard wearing protection in the future. ACF-50 has to be done about 3 times a year. I would go for more of a rust blocker like XCP 👍

Driving licence requirements The two most important changes were that from 19.01. 13, new rider/drivers: must be a minimum of 21 years of age (for tricycles over 15 kW), and. require a motorcycle licence (category A or A1) to be able to drive them because they no longer fall within category B1.

super confused by the licencing. long story short, i have a crappy cancer and need to have an operation that is gonna leave me paralyzed from T9 down. I dont want to lose the ability to ride. I have a full drivers licence and bop around on a little 125cc scooter for fun at the moment but would love to get my hands on a larger capacity bike like this to ferry me and a wheelchair (folded) around after the operation. Im really sorry to ask i know questions are a pain as someone has probably already asked but could you let me know, currently, what licence i need for this particular scooter in 2024? i would be extremely grateful, trying to get as much sorted before the op as i can. @redangrevival Жыл бұрын
Yes, I was really wondering if trikes can use bus lanes 🤔
@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-1968 Жыл бұрын
I'm new here and that was a very interesting video. The Bus Lane issue is interesting as it falls on the historic legal category of trike. A motorcycle and sidecar is a TRIKE. A Reliant Regal is a TRIKE. Things with 3 wheels 😏Well at least one of the above isn't allowed in a Bus lane, if not both. Laws need to be clarified and looking back at the kerb weight of the Reliant that had to be reduced to a point of acceptance within the law at that time. One point that bothers me with the modern Trike configuration is what happens when the rider leans too far on the bend at speed ? Could it flip over and land on top of the rider? Would it just slide out, having somehow gone to a point of no return on two wheels?
@redangrevival Жыл бұрын
Very true! Haha I would like to see a Reliant in the bus lane 👍 I think it would slide out from under you rather than tip over

@@OntarioAndrews415 - that is probably because most people in USA, think it’s super dangerous, riding something with top speed of less than 100 MPH. There is not many people that import bikes, when they don’t make much money. And maybe can lose all the money. Because people are dumb. But that speed, is what kill. Not riding slow. And that’s the reason why bikes are dangerous. They are only making up dumb reasons, why they have to get fast bikes. Nothing to do with safety. USA needs more roads with slower speed. Government all over the world, are doing the same stupid thing. Closing down the slow roads between cities and towns. So stupid… At the same time, talking about making traffic safe.
