Not exactly. I understand that It's the spacing between the front wheels. Yamahas Nikken can't be ridden on a car license due spacing, but their other 560cc TMax 3 wheeler can, owing to the spacing.

Remarkable to think the 250cc MP3 first appeared late 2005 and the 500cc engined Gilera Fuoco version in 2007. Brilliantly gutsy of Piaggio to actually go ahead and put it into production having displayed the concept a few years earlier.

@Peter Lowe One - I've owned a Piaggio MP3 500LT ie variant for four years now. It has been a real blast because of it's ability to be ridden on a regular car licence in the UK. One must pass a basic (CBT) training every two years and limited to 125cc maximum, until one passes a full motorcycle licence test. The advantage I found was the locking suspension made it easier (being disabled) to handle the bike's hefty 500Lbs dry curb weight. There's no side stand like two wheeled counterparts, the locking suspension is handy at traffic lights as one can lock the suspension and then just twist and go from a standstill. The ABS braking is effective and doesn't lose grip over slippery surfaces, unlike a typical two wheeler does easily. One can still filter on the MP3 too, which is another major advantage over a regular fixed axle trike. The con's: Frequently eats through rear tyres on full power mode, that according to the service manual swapped out every 1800 miles. The problem with that is, the exhaust pipe and entire rear swing arm assembly must me removed to get to access to the rear wheel. Lastly changing a headlight bulbs involves stripping the entire front end to get the headlight housing out to replace either dipped or main beam bulbs. Would I buy another one.... No. I don't like the level of complacency from many of the UK Piaggio dealerships. MP3's don't hold resale value because of the new stricter Low emissions zones throughout London, but costs allot to buy new and used, they're not so popular with British consumer commuters as a result. Thanks for sharing your review and ride experiences. 😉

If you put a car tyre on the back wheel it might last longer, maybe up to 10 or 15 thousand miles. There is information about it on KZbin. It's called darksiding. It might work on your bike.

Nice review Peter. I have a 2016 MP3 500, bought it new after owning motorcycles. I really wanted the CanAm Spider but my husband thought I would like the MP3 because it rides like a motorcycle and it was a fraction of the cost. ;o) But I really wanted the stability of the CanAm. I still have my MP3 and have not been disappointed. It will go 80+ mph on the highway and absolutely a fun bike to ride. I've not had any issues at all with the bike after 8 years. I will admit that I've never tried to lock the front wheels without coming to a complete stop with feet down first. In fact I'll need to look at whether or not my bike even has that flashing light feature that you highlight when the bike slows to an idle while still rolling. I've never noticed it. Might be time to trade in for new as I really like that reverse feature on the new bikes. :-)

Thanks for this comment. Vespa seems a little overpriced when compared to other brands, but I guess you get what you pay for. It does seem like Vespa owners tend to be satisfied with their driving experience and rave about the scooter's longevity. Just as an example, having owned a couple of CPI scooters, it's incredible how quickly the electronic ignition goes out and you are resorting to kick starts in no time. 🛵

Thanks. I think many aspects of being a rider a quite subjective. And there are many conditions in which people ride which those people probably think are universal. I don't think I could use one of these, but I would love to have one as a toy. That's because I commute 70 miles round trip on a two-wheeler, and most of that is in or rather "through" traffic. I do that all year round as snow and ice are rare in my location, though in mid winter it is freezing (zero celsius) or colder at 6.40 when I set off. The Yamaha Tricity 125/155/300 models (mostly the 125 and 155) are popular here, but even they cannot get through stationary traffic on Japanese roads, narrow as many of them are, unless the rider has plenty of confidence (only my opinion). For evening or weekend riding, I would have one of these if the fuel econoy were OK, but I would guess it is like my 2018 Tmax 530, with an average of about 20 kilometres/litre. I sure would love to try on of these, though.

Yeah, I'll be clear, I'm a fan of these, I think they're great to drive, but they're also not something that I would buy... at least, not with other options out there. Had a 500 version a few years ago and remember accelerating too hard going up a grassy mound, the rear slid right and a natural instinct to steer in direction of skid saved the day. I am checking out the Piaggio MP3 because we have a Harley Davidson Tri-Glide and they ride like a dump truck. n My wife is crippled due to cancer treatments and that's why we now ride a three wheeled motorcycle. She has battled cancer eight times, had 12 surgeries in ten years, maxed out on Chemotherapy, radiation and cyber knife treatments, She is currently on Immunotherapy treatments and will be every 28 days for the rest of her life. But she still likes to ride. When one of the places of cancer in her brain caused her to have seizures, we went to three wheels. Our thoughts were if she had a seizure on a two wheeled motorcycle it might cause an accident. On a three wheeled motorcycle we feel that I should be able to pull over and tend to her needs. I guess my biggest question is, How does it ride? How well does the MP3 handle pot holes, seams in the road any kind of bump? Mainly, how well does the rear wheel handle these things? On most motorcycles the rider doesn't feel the bumps and pot holes as bad as the passenger. In our case my main concern is PASSENGER comfort. Please help. Thank you.

I owned an MP3 500 in California and now have one in the UK. Piaggio added an extra inch or so of separation between the two front wheels of MP3s exported to the USA and the UK so that they could be classed as "trikes" and therefore are technically legal to drive on a car licence, and without a helmet! but you may struggle to get insurance without a motorcycle licence, and good luck trying to convince your local traffic cops that you are allowed to ride this "bike" without a helmet😁 When the scooter is moving forward at anything more than walking speed the tilt lock is always unlocked so it handles like a bike, and a pretty heavy bike at that! The reason for this is that if the forks could be locked upright while moving at even a very slow speed it would throw you off the first time you tried to turn! Even at the low speed at which the MP3 allows you to lock the forks ( when the orange light flashes) you can feel it trying to throw you off if to try to make a turn! And contrary to what Peter says it does not "self level" when you turn on the tilt lock ... It locks the scooter at whatever angle you happened to be holding it at when you pressed the button, even if that was an overbalancing angle (At least my two did, maybe the one Peter is demoing had a self leveling feature I was unaware of)

A large pothole would upset a 2 wheeler as well. Honestly, I think this trike would handle it well. It has a real stability to it through many different road surfaces. I'm not aware of winter tires for it. Where I live, we don't tend to market it as a year round vehicle. It's certainly a vehicle that you could extend the season with, but I live in a Canadian province with 97% plus winter tire use on cars! So between the snow, the salt, and the level of snow clearing outside of the city, it's not really practical to ride anything other than an enclosed 4 wheel vehicle.

Does it have floor pedals? I am asking for a person with limited leg use. This seems like an option for him. He can pedal a normal three wheel bicycle with effort. However, he does not have really sufficcient leg authority to manipulate leg pedals with ease. I will be interested in purchasing something like this if it is readily available. (South Africa) thank you for the info.

Nice review, a few remarks... You can ride a motorcycle very well in the rain. And, speaking from experience, you will not stay dry on a scooter like vehicle when it really rains. I always have proper gear on, also on my large scooter. The only thing which is really better than most motorcycles is storage space. Yet the riding experience on a true motorcycle is, in my view, better, more pure. And I do ride both... By the way, I believe you ride them, not drive them. It still is not a car...

It is grate I love mine but my advice is to not use that front suspension lock but only at stand still or in parking for an short while. A problem in driving it locked that last little bit to an stop will occure if the road is uneven. The machine might travel up on two wheels and then turn over. It happend to me but I am pretty strong so it became to be a controlled drop without enjuries and broken parts but it was scary, very scary. The machine should be driven like a bike! With the front keept unlocked it is easy to handle where one can lean it side to side pretty deep without any problem, it is very well balanced and easy to contol in low speeds by using the throttle.

Very vice bike. Very to the point informative review It seems the one button new to this tilting 3-wheel and must be known when to use it the self-balance slider button. Sad the switch graphics aren't more though out as it. I It has two tilled wheels for both sides with only a tiny locked/unlocked lock logo between the wheels. Should of had the lock position with the wheels upright as would be on the bike with a locked lock logo and the unlock as it is now. Been much clearer to understand and see. Nit pick, but to my OCD it makes more sense.

Great review, Peter, thanks. I'm from Ontario, looking to avoid buying a second car for the family, as most of the time it would be used for short errands or commutes that a motorbike could do easily. However, I've never owned a 2-wheeler, mainly safety concerns - But along comes the MP3 with 2 front wheels that allay most of my fears. My wife hates the traditional trike look (no offense to the CanAm) and the MP3 wins in that respect as well. But I was wondering about longevity of Piaggios, specifically the MP3? Would I be delusional to expect hassle-free (say) 8-10 years from a Piaggio? Typical annual maintenance costs would help as well. Thanks again.
@PeterLoweOne
@PeterLoweOne Жыл бұрын
Piaggio have been running around the world for a VERY long time with great reliability. I wouldn't expect a properly maintained machine to have any real issues in that timespan, for sure. As far as annual maintenance costs, I'm really not sure off the top of my head, but that could be found out by checking the owner's manual and the dealer that you buy it from. (P.S. I used to live in Ontario until Spring of last year!)

My Kawasaki Ninja 300 motorcycle has been very reliable, only problem I had was a blown headlight bulb. Bought the bike seven years ago (new). As for safety, you can be safe on a motorcycle if you are careful and try to see dangers before they become dangerous. Scottish roads can be busy, especially the cities. Hope you bought two or three wheeled vehicle and are having fun.

And another note: The system is NOT self-leveling... it is only a LOCK/UNlock of the tilt system, if you are on a grade or angle it will LOCK the forks in the necessary angle for the bike to be upright - that's all.

As far as "self levelling" you're right, I need to be a bit more precise in the way that I describe this feature, but it's very cool to have it basically catch you upright, and hold you! As I said in the video, this machine really impressed me. Again.. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

To be clear, in the UK, not all MP3 (and Gilera Fuoco) models are entitled to be ridden on a car license (and without a helmet!). Only specific models which had wider wheel base were classed as a trike. Other MP3s were just normal bike. Also, if you have a newer car license, you may still have to do mandatory 1-day CBT bike training to ride this on car license. (Which i think is a welcome addition else lot of idiots on the road who has no clue how to ride). Having said that I find that 500cc is pretty useless in this setup. It is more like a 250cc or even 125cc with 2up. Not to mention the bad owner service reviews and costs. Not many mechanics wants to touch it which is why they dont maintain their value.🤦‍♂️

In Canada, I think these are priced fairly for what you get. But yeah, there are going to be motorcycles worth considering at this price point. I think this is a super cool vehicle, and I like it a lot, but I still bought a traditional motorcycle this past winter. You have to want this over a traditional motorcycle for it to make sense to most people. Having said that. This does make a strong case for being better than a motorcycle in many situations.
