The poet here symbolises in himself the problem of the new African confused about his personality in the situation in which he is influenced by the traditional life and values (symbolised by ‘jungle drums’), and European culture (symbolised by the ‘piano’). This is a problem that has acquired the description “clash of cultures”.
Lines 24-5: “it ends in the middle of a phrase at a daggerpoint.”
A daggerpoiint is sharp and too small therefore for anything to rest stably on it. The poet can only half-formulate the meaning or impact of the new culture on him.
The poet, in the first two stanzas, gives picture of primitive natural Africa. To what extent do you think the poet generalises and exaggerates what he actually sees? Do you find that this weakens of strengthens the effect of the poem?
Write an essay describing your experience of the clash of cultures.
