Do you mean left and right? That’s a great question. The soft pedal makes grand pianos’ keyboards move slightly left and right so that the hammers hit fewer of the strings and it makes the sound softer and have a different tone.

It can be (especially when you're playing loud stuff like this Rach 2), so I will often wear Bose noise-cancelling headphones for two main reasons: 1) hearing protection, and 2) I watch KZbin and stuff on my laptop up on the music rack while practicing sometimes :D
