I am probably your oldest online student at 76. And I have played piano by ear, from time to time, for years, but stuck doing the exact same thing. I only play to entertain myself with head phones now. Had a baby grand in my office but gave it to my daughter-in-law about a year ago, no doing it with a keyboard. Enjoy learning some of your basics. And I have always favored piano music. Always.

Kaitlyn, I love the theme that you keep repeating that is to cut out unnecessary music theory and childrens song and get right to playing the songs that I relate to. I want to learn how to play the songs that make me feel good and do it as quickly as possible. I am 76 years old. I have tried playing the piano before, got frustrated and gave up. After watching many of your KZbin videos, I am reinvigorated to try again. Thanks.

Thanks for this video. I'm newer to your site so am catching up on some of the older videos and this one is great. One thing I learned while watching your hands is have you left will lead to the next chord ahead of the right making the shift. This is helpful for a beginner/intermedate player because larger jumps like from C to F back to C can be sloppy. Now I just need to condition myself to move the left hand ahead of time to make things easier. The sustain pedal can help cover the gap.

Hi! I've been playing piano for our church services for 10 months, and am constantly looking for ways to improve rhythm in my left hand, especially since we have no drummer now, and the song leader depends on my rhythm. I've been playing by ear only for over 55 years, and in that time, mostly organ and keyboard with organ sounds. Now I am playing almost exclusively piano - but have realized that my lack of disciplined practices doing scales on the piano is holding me back. More importantly, too bad so sad that I didn't learn sight reading. I'd learn a simple piece by notes, and then play it by ear - without proper fingering, and only octaves with the left hand. I still plan to learn sight reading, but it'll likely be "kids' songs?" I have composed many, many songs, and realize after watching this video that I have been varying the ways that my hands "talk" to each other to create variations of songs and their similar chord progressions. The techniques you teach and demonstrate in this video are superbly helpful! Thank you Kaitlyn! I like your style! I've watched other online teachers, but you're the best yet. I'll be considering your courses - because perhaps it's not too late to learn more complicated left hand rhythms, which could make the improvisations with right hand even more melodious and effective. I've got a question: Do you have video(s) on proper fingering? I know that my technique needs improvement; for example, I'll always use fingers 1-2-3 in my right hand when doing 3-note chords - when 1-3-5 might be better. But when is it better? And when doing trills, I understand using 1-3 in either left or right hands, but I usually prefer using 1-2 or 2-3. Any feedback on fingering techniques in the way of a video could be very helpful. I realize that fingering is different for the various genres of music, but since I play exclusively traditional hymns, and to make it more challenging, most of my playing has been on an organ keyboard, perhaps it will be achievable. Thanks again for your feedback, Kaitlyn!

I'm only beginning the process of thinking about learning to play the piano. you asked in the video about the reason that I would want to learn to play the piano whether it's church or some other reason. The truth is I doubt if there is one person in the world that has the reason that I would want to play and learned the piano. I actually think people would think I'm crazy for the most part if I were to tell you why I would want to learn. I've never owned a piano and never really had a desire to play it. I watched your introduction video yesterday for about 45 minutes. Don't have any experience on the piano other than when I was a kid, my father and brother were learning the piano and I just couldn't grasp it. However, that was 50 years ago. Though I'm almost 62 years old and thinking about retiring in the next few months for I might get involved in learning the piano. Though I am extremely busy and have two houses to take care of that need a lot of work, but when I retire, I can get a lot done fast. But I do have a motivation about why I would want to learn music and learn to play the piano. You see I love the Lord Jesus Christ and have a testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. I dream of starting a school or perhaps as part of the church in heaven where one plays instruments, sings and dances and shares the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. So, all these things that I just mentioned will be ways of glorifying God the way I believe music should be. We are supposed to use our talents to praise the Lord and share our testimony using music, instruments, verbal testimonies, writing our own music and to dance for the Lord and to help others and inspire others through all the media as I just mentioned. So, me learning the piano is to help me become a teacher of these things in heaven one day. Play music in heaven, sing and dance. I want to grow my God given talent and win souls through heart felt music. In my 20's I was a ballroom student and teacher. I have two goals singing and playing instruments. Start with the piano and reading music.

I'd suggest at least getting one with weighted keys before you get too far into it. If you learn on a light touch midi/synth keyboard you'll find it hard to play a real piano.
