In this piano lesson, you're going to learn how to play emotional piano chords.
Sign up for MORE awesome content at bit.ly/PianoPig...
You're going to be able to transform those boring minor & major triads into something that has much more emotion, something that actually hits the soul a little bit more!
It's a 3 step process which consists of 7ths, 9ths and chord inversions.
The first two steps are fairly straight forward; learn how to add the 7th and 9th to major and minor triads. The 3rd step is the part where your creativity comes into play. You need to play around with all the possibilities of 7ths & 9ths and then play around with different inversions of all of this variations.
There is an infinite number of variations so should have plenty of ideas to work with!

Great job explaining the basic triads and adding 7th's and 9th's to them to add flavor. And also inverting those new chords to add yet another type of flavor.

Skeptical of the title but you nailed this. 7ths and 9ths are so useful in this regard, 11ths and 13ths can often sound too tense for that raw emotional feel. That said, a lot of master musicians could probably prove me wrong!
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 5 жыл бұрын
11ths can sound amazing in this context, but they are harder to pull off. I thought it was a bit too advanced for this particular video but maybe I'll explain how to use 11ths in this context in a future video!

A super emotional chord is a major chord with a #11. #11 is basically one halfstep under the 5th, but in a higher octave. This chord only exists one place in the major scale: on the subdominant (so the root of the chord has to be on 4th note in the songs key). If the key is C like in the video, you can therefore add a #11 to the F. I think especially the 9th is a good combo with the #11 since they are a major third apart, which sounds nice.

all keys sound the same, unless you change how the keys are tuned relative to the other keys. most pianos are tuned to equal temperament the intervals in the major scale are the same, therefore there is not one major key that is supposedly brighter than the other. the same goes for minor

Very informative lesson this really makes boring chord progressions stand out, however it would help a lot if you would elaborate a little more about how you incorporate rhythm in these progressions because that makes the chords really come alive and is also something i'm struggling with on my own. thanks great video Simon!
@Bamblagram
@Bamblagram 5 жыл бұрын
GerryBerry I completely agree. I find that applying/creating rhythmic ideas very challenging, not only for the left hand, but the right hand, and trying to have the two interact in a rhythmic and musical context. I can voice chords in a certain way, but making them “move” is what I find challenging..

Thanks. You gave some very simple and solid info about some fairly complex music theory, and delivered that with fingers on keys. So many KZbin piano gurus don't do that nearly as well...but like another commentor said, there's more than one kind of 7th. The one you used here is a major 7th. I hope you'll cover minor and dominant 7ths in another video. But I'll check out any piano videos you do and I'll learn useful things.

Does the technique used during 10.06-10.08 have a name? It’s where you kind of overlap 2 keys, pressing one a split second before pressing the second. I love it when pianists do this, it melts my heart. I’d love to know what it’s called 😊
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it has an official name, I like to call it "note rolling". Gospel players do this alot, it always adds so much to your playing as long as you don't overdo it. Play around with it 😀

I guess my only question is how he came up with the c d a f progression to start. Apparently from reading comments it’s in the key of D but there’s probably like 3 more chords in the key and tons of combinations he COULD have made, how did he come up with this so it sounds so good?
@Piano_Pig

It's a very common chord progression (1-6-2-4). It's in C major and all of those chords are from the key of C major.
