Welcome to Jazz Piano 101. Class is in session. This comprehensive tutorial is the perfect starting point if you’re looking to explore the enticing (but intimidating) realm of jazz piano. Kevin Castro will break down the essential elements you need to start playing jazz piano.
You’ll learn the fundamentals of swing rhythm - the heartbeat of jazz music that'll give your playing that irresistible 'groove.' You'll also learn the essential 7th chords, a staple in the jazz sound that adds depth and complexity to your music.
And get ready as we thoroughly break down the infamous 2-5-1 chord progression. Understanding this progression is a game-changer for your piano skills, paving the way for you to play countless jazz standards.
Speaking of jazz standards, what better way to learn these topics than by playing a classic? We'll apply all these concepts to the popular jazz standard, "Satin Doll." By the end of this tutorial, you'll not only understand these fundamental jazz concepts, but you'll also be playing a beloved jazz piece!
So, get ready to dive into the beautiful world of jazz piano.
And don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more beginner jazz piano lessons and to join our supportive learning community. Let's swing into action!

First, thanks,,,, verrrry good.. Question: after 12 years of piano, my repertoire is wider than a few years ago. I play 2-3 pieces everyday ( sometimes, only the chalenging parts) in addition of my regular practice. What is the best way to add a new piece, without neglect my old songs.

I’ve been playing guitar for over a decade and always wanted to learn piano. I can’t believe how much I learned in less than 3 minutes, this is the single most helpful jazz piano video on the entirety of the internet, seriously.

I was taught classical piano, though I'm rusty! These days I prefer using instruments as an accompaniment for singing. Jazz chords are so beautiful, and there is so much freedom there. Classical piano is so much perfection, and jazz piano is so much freedom and feeling. I love bringing all the notes in there for those full sounds. So beautiful and dynamic.

First draw two circles, then add four lines for the horses legs, and then add some details for a perfect horse. That's how all jazz tutorials feel. Let's add some swing rythm, learn the 251 progression, and then just play jazz, oh by the way, none of the 251 chords will be played in the final song 😂

So should I be learning blues piano before jazz piano??
@BillyVon69
@BillyVon69 4 ай бұрын
@@angelindisguise4638 hope you found your answer a month later, anyways, I learned blues on guitar first, then found myself playing jazz. So, I think it would really help whatever the instrument. Regardless, wherever you start, keep at it. Also, knowing some basic music theory can really help. Good luck!

Great lesson and great explanations. Pianote instructors are the best. Other jazz piano videos I watch by other instructors are way above my level. This one, while requiring work, is at a level I can attain with enough practice. Thank-you, Kevin.

What a fantastic tutorial/ introduction to jazz. I'll be honest, I found the b section a little confusing just because of the pace. Would have been nice to have a playthrough of it like we did with the first part. BUUUUT with some pausing and clicking back fourth I was able to play the whole thing in not too much time at all. Thank you so much for this!!

It would be helpful if you mentioned all the songs mentioned in the video in the video description. For example, at 20:11 you list off those three songs, but in order to find those song names after watching the video, I had to scrub through and look for them.

Honestly just playing a 7th chord is a challenge for a beginner. Mine just sound horrible - presumably due to a lack of a proper technique. (I'm studying piano since half a year, can already play some short pieces from the Baroque era.) So I don't know how realistic it is - to teach a beginner by immediately jumping into 7th chord progressions.
