@The Oracle learning how to play songs on a piano by sheet / scroll videos is a lot different than playing by ear. It takes a long time to learn both, but I would recommend waiting for the latter. From ages 6-13 I tried in vain to learn the piano via sheet music with some talented teachers. Last winter I watched this video about learning to play by ear. This was the kick in the pants I needed because, after a year, I've become a competent pianist. I'm improving everyday because I'm putting in the work. The reward is hours of enjoying gospel, rock and country songs I never believed I could play. Thank you so much for this. You taught me more in 7 minutes than I learned in seven years of sheet music lessons.

Lisa you are such a gift and a precious person. Thanks for sharing these tips with us! I quit piano years ago but I want to be able to play songs I want to sing haha. I can somewhat already figure out songs by ear but I don’t really like how it sounds when I play with both hands because it’s kind of too stiff and uninteresting. It’s a really good too that you don’t have to play every single melody note. I just need to keep practicing and figure out more ways to make it interesting. You give me a lot of encouragement, thank you❤❤❤

Having watched a lot of your other tutorials it looks like I may have found the one I want. I am 59 and I've been playing guitar pretty much by ear since I was 19. Every so often I make a weak effort to learn piano properly. I do a lot of home recording so I play single note keyboard to record bass and strings etc. Then came this lockdown and the perfect opportunity to devote more time to learning. I'm definitely improving but I know for a fact that I don't want to play Chopin or Beethoven. I want to back myself singing classic songs like I do on guitar, Elton, Neil Young and the like, in the key that suits my voice, without transposing. I'm left handed so I have to take a guitar with me everywhere, but if there was a piano, I could just belt out a few tunes. Not sure why I'm telling you all this. I'm probably telling myself. Now to watch this video and see if I can be a natural. 😆

I really wanted to take a second to say HUGE thanks for this. This is an AMAZING guide to working out your own renditions of songs. I do agree with some of the comments that you already need a foundation of some "theory" to understand the chord chart stuff, but regardless the technique presented here for learning chords is still viable for those who don't know music theory (The obvious difference being, don't look up the chord charts, and try to figure out the root note/movement of the bass/chord progression by ear. Looking up the chords is more or less a shortcut to this, but I find a lot of transcriptions out there are in the wrong keys, and if you don't know how to transpose, this can be potentially more harmful to beginners). I am currently working on a few covers of some pop songs, and know theory/chord progressions to a very advanced degree, but was still having crazy trouble with combining melody/chords, etc. The most value I got from this video was the "mindset" and approach to chunking out chords, and combining it with melody. To be honest once the chords are established, and you "Know" the melody, the melody almost comes out of the chords on its own, and then forming your own renditions from omitting certain melody notes is that much easier (i.e. when she says you don't have to play EVERY melody note, because the audience assumes the majority of it). In the end this helped me realize I was overthinking the hell out of it, and not really approaching it well. I went back to the piano right after watching this, and pretty much hammered out the entire tune (I even picked up this song along the way! Talk about a nice bonus hahahah). Anyways, I hope more people benefit from this as much as I did. This was truly wonderful, and very well presented. Thank you so much again!

Great tips! Given that “the melodic notes played on the down beats in a song usually falls on one of the three notes in the basic chord”, I came to the realization that I can reverse this rule to find and add chords to any song by playing the root note of the chord at note intervals 1, 3, or 5 (plus 1 octave) BELOW the melodic notes played on the down beats. The best thing is that you can use this rule to improvise a melody and instantaneously add chords to it, thus truly playing by ear without having to listen to, memorize, and/or lookup chord progressions in lead sheets.
@rev.davemoorman38835 жыл бұрын
Actually, I learned the most important chord progression of Hallelujah from the lyrics! And the other way works as well. Most notes of the melody have to be in one of three chords - E can be in C, Em, and Am. C and Am don't work. And once I learned the importance of the II chord (Dmaj in the key of C), I had 83% of the music theory I needed :-)

@@PianoteOfficial Thank you for the response. This is awesome! It's more directed at accompaniments but still very helpful as I got to pick up new ideas. My current technique feels lacking with just the single notes for the melody. My struggle is in making it sound fuller, like adding extra notes for harmony, etc. But after watching the video, I think adding a note an octave lower may help. Also, rolling the fingers sound really great, can't wait to add this. And of course, the fills (gotta practice this first). Anyway, I'm gonna be looking forward to that new course. Thanks again! 😊🙏

I would love some honest advice here. I started piano at 17 and I've been playing for over 3 years now. I've practiced like I never have practiced anything before and have made considerable progress playing the likes of Rachmaninoff preludes, Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Nocturnes, etc. Some of the things I can play well include anime or movie music, but they took me countless hours of practice throughout several months. Then I stumbled upon a video of a guy who listened to a song I had been playing and he improvised it more beautifully than I had ever played it. I know it's unproductive to compare myself to others and I'll never have his perfect pitch, but this is really a skill I'd like to improve at. Is there a course or book that can improve my knowledge of these chords? Thanks :)
