Long tie ago I chose saxophone as my major instrument and I told to be good you ought to transcribe from records or cd's but I always wondered why because one will be playing the same thing year in and year out and that could lead to boredom and frustration and perhaps ridicule from other musicians like Miles Davis who used to say to some jazz cats who joined his band: "Man, you play the same things all the time, and how long are going to play that sh.t?" Now with that scale, one can play different ideas from the heart, at all times for years and years. Great staff, man. Thanks.

Johnny 💘 your sheet music. I dont know if I told you before. About 3 years ago I was making a guitar lesson video on on the Lester Flatt bluegrass run in G. It was called the G run. As I did the 🏃 (run); I realized the notes were from the E min blues scale. E G A Bb B D E. 1 b3 4 b5 5 b7 1. Its up on you tube somewhere where I discover it. I play a little bluegrass style and play it all the time on 🎸. Did not realize I was playing a modified blues scale.

Hi Johnny. You're my best piano teacher, like no one else! I tried to learn to play blues,jazz, pop, rock n roll folk, Chinese, Irish and Xmas carols but always depended on sheets, books and sight reading. I loved the divine notes of the piano and was determined to be able mto play. I was 15. At 18, I had an upright at home. My best friend' gave me some free lessons. She had basic skills and taught me fingerng, counting, major scales and sight readings, bigger pieces likeThe Maiden's Prayer s and other American pieces. with more speed and broken chords. She had no idea abt skills but very soon I was playing simple classics of the great masters in the green book "Piano Pieces the Whole World Plays... full of beginner's favs - Fur Elise, Turkish March, The Swan, Faust Gonod's, Waltz, ,Chopin's Minuette... popular classics for the average 5 - 6 grader. I m very fomd of tha book and like to use it to improve my sight reading and musicianship. I moved on to play Bach 's Prelude and a Chopin Waltin E min but in my uni years,,I was hooked to folk and pop. I had all The Incredu le String Band' s, all Crossby, Stills, Nash and Young's and all the Beatles' LPs I took part aa a chorus girl, on pzr uni of Malaya's production of Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess amd fell in love with blues music. After graduation in 1972, I joined The Hippy Trail and left my normal life forl India to seek spiritual knowledge and Enlightenment. It wasn' till 1980, , when my daughter, who used to go to the piano and made up songs she sang as she played on the keys that tthe piano came back to be the major interest in our. life.I was strumming the guitar and singing devotional and the 70s songs then. My daughter was musically gifted. One day, a concert pianist called number by mistake... she accepted my 4 year old. She was very ambitious. but her teaching was mediocre.I had to fill in. At 5, my daughter was entered to play a jazzy rag time piece. She played but without the oomph! Still, she had perfect pitch. She knew all the major, minor, augm. and dimi.keys and scales wiihout looking. We had many changes of teachers, some of the best professors at the RAM. She was accepted by tbe Junior RAM at 7 passed her grade 8 at 11with distinction y teacher who taught better. . jazz course but learnt nothingsoou abt how to play but came sway with alost of jazz terminology00 - 12 bar blues, cycle of 5ths, chords, harmony etc

@alexisgs88004 жыл бұрын
I've learned this as a blues scale or pentatonic scale with a blue note. Maybe because gospel is not as common in Canada. In C, I would have called this a C major blues scale and if I start one on the minor third of C (Eb pentatonic with the blue note), I would call it a C minor blues scale. I wonder if those names are also valid now.
@hombacom4 жыл бұрын
I also realized that major/minor blues scale fit well over all song with major/minor scale for a while ago. Its though confusing theory wise with all scale name variants and translate to all keys. Btw check out my web app, google Chord Player, that makes it easier to test.

I teach piano, just came across this video and picked at it out of curiosity. And Nope. Sorry, doesn't work in most of the songs unless it's a simple blues. I play mostly songs with Major 7 th cords and also play lots of Sade style music which is only a Lydian scale. You play very well.

Who else found this video and thought he'd talk about the Pentatonic Minor? The diatonic version of that scale does fit over almost anything for some reason. The Gospel Scale was an interesting choice though. I'm a guitarist but write music and was curious about writing good piano parts.

Cracks me up when you’ll rip through some riffs or pieces and then say , “it’s pretty simple.” lol . Anyway, thank you for your videos. You are awesome. 👏
