One of my favourite Beatles songs. I'm new to learning piano and I was able to follow this really well. And now I can play penny lane. So thank you very much for making the video.

I love your channel! You've made learning so much easier without reading sheet music. I've always thought the best way to learn was with sight reading, and this has gotten me precisely nowhere, since it's much harder and much less fun! I love the color scheme, double keyboard for easy reference, and you! Thanks, Nate!

Great tutorials, very easy to follow. I like the no-nonsense unpatronising explaining of the chord progressions with fingering showing on the screen. I am 77 from Scotland, always played songs as I hear them , the resulting chords are good but I know that the difference between "good" and "faithful to the original" depends on the correct chords and placing the fingers. You can't always copy that by ear. The printouts are great too.

Very nice, thanks! I throw a few variations after listening to this and to the song. Biggest difference is it sounds like the second part of the verse has the bass drop an octive. Excellent video!
@PianowithNate Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! You're totally right about that octave drop, which is such a cool touch. I notice McCartney doing that a lot with bass parts and its really cool. The reason I didnt work that into this arrangement is that part is of course being played on electric bass which is a suitable tone for those notes...on most pianos if you drop the left hand an octave lower than where we have it here, it will sound bad. If you have one of those rare pianos where the lowest octave sounds full and and nice, go for it!

Brilliantly explained! A real treat. Quite an understatement to say the Beatles never really stick within a key Ha ha. But this modal change to Bm has a great effect doesn't it. The key change to A for the chorus using the E chord as a pivot is also slick. Great song and really well explained; thank you. One addition I would appreciate is a melody line; you gave the 1st 4 notes so hopefully I can work out the rest.
@PianowithNate3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it!! And yes, they are the masters of moving through different keys in a way that is intriguing and satisfying but not disorienting or try-hard. Since most piano tutorials on KZbin end up putting the vocal melody in the right hand, I tried to make my "thing" be learning the piano part as it is on the record to accompany singing. Otherwise they would just be too long! You can definitely combine this tutorial with one of the other ones that has the right hand playing the vocal melody… Here's one! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5vMeHurfNR3gsk

⚠ IMPORTANT NOTE ⚠ The C#m in the chorus should be an A/C#. You can keep doing an A in the right hand and just change the bass note to C#. Hi Nate, I’m 19 and I’ve never played and instrument before. Where would you recommend starting out?
@PianowithNate Жыл бұрын
Hi! I certainly recommend piano as a first instrument since it is so nicely laid out visually so its best for understanding theory ideas. If you know nothing at all, try searching some "first piano lesson" videos on youtube. Once you know the note names and your fingers can play a bit, find a song you like from this playlist and give it a try! kzbin.info/aero/PLyKUNsqxTQI2QXzsZDk6aMIV7khIUcWEQ

@@PianowithNateThank you Nate. I’ve reached out to many KZbinrs but none have responded. If I were to purchase a keyboard which one do you think should purchase (I’m talking about the amount of keys)
@PianowithNate Жыл бұрын
It depends on your budget and space! I would go with at least 76, and 88 if possible. Full sized weighted keys are best...at least make sure that they are touch sensitive (some cheaper smaller keyboards will play notes the same volume no matter how hard you hit them). Good luck!

Interesting way of teaching the changes with no regards to functional theory. (The Beatles didn't know functional theory) For example the modulation to the parallel minor has the 7th in the melody on Bm7. Or the modulation one step down to A, using the E7 [IV7_(V7 of bVII)] as a pivot chord. I'd imagine it would be hard to hear or distinguish for a beginner.

Having watched the amazing cover of this by the wonderful REO Brothers, well worth checking out; I decided to learn the piano part and came here to double check the "transition" chords from verse-chorus and chorus back to verse. Very helpful, thanks. I would take issue with one chord? I'm pretty sure that the 2nd chord in the chorus is A-major in 1st inversion and not C# minor! 🎹😉😉
