The Beatles performing “Penny Lane.”
Two days after recording some overdubs for 'A Day In The Life', The Beatles spent the afternoon in East London at Angel Lane, Stratford, filming scenes for the video of 'Penny Lane' with Scandinavian director, Peter Goldmann.
Shortly after the East London shoot, Goldmann and The Beatles headed to Knole Park, the grounds of a stately home in Kent, to film scenes of the band horse-riding in the countryside. Around this time, Goldmann and his crew (but minus The Beatles) travelled to Liverpool to shoot the sequences near to Penny Lane.
A few days before filming started for 'Penny Lane', Goldmann shot a promo for 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Both shoots presented a challenge for everyone involved owing to the Musicians' Union ban on any action that could be construed as miming. Despite these limitations, both the films Goldmann made were so innovative that neither would have looked out of place on MTV a decade and a half later.

Can you imagine having the talent to write a song that good? The lyrics, the harmonies, the melody, the brass solo instrument breaks? And then doing it all over again tomorrow to create something new? I guess that's why they are the Beatles and we aren't. Not too shabby, boys.

It brings tears to my eyes as well. Even having no connection to a mundane lane in a mundane UK town Paul made it seem magical. The Beatles had that magic. Strawberry Fields, Elenore Rigby as well heck the list is endless. They may have been a pop band as far as a label but they were so much more. Modern day poets might better fit.

They were already the most famous/ popular band in the world by the mid 60s, based upon their early success with their boy band rock n roll output. It seems too coincidental that they would then become the best band ever too. They had a high profile so were more influential than others for this reason when they started experimenting I reckon. Doesn't make them the best.

@@pauls7803 When other great musicians gush over them I think nothing more needs to be said. In the words of Noel Gallagher from Oasis " They were the best and still are" And that was/is because of their unparalleled melodic genius and their experimentation in songs like " Tomorrow Never knows" for example. " Lennon and McCartney are the greatest composers of the 20th century"----Leonard Bernstein classical music composer and conductor.

Beatles music always got better the more you listened to it. I think it was because they were braking new ground with every Album. After Rubber soul and Revolver, I remember listining to Pepper. I didn't like it at first. but the more I heard it I couldn't stop playing it. The things they did with a 4 track tape player or whatever they used 60 years ago led the way for the rest to follow.

I think that's the same for all of us, JWL. Paul really had/has such a wonderful gift for sympathetically evoking the character and lives of people and their worlds/ the places they inhabit/ in a few simple, everyday words and phrases. Think of Eleanor Rigby (and Father McKenzie), the characters in She's Leaving Home, Molly and Desmond in Obladi-Oblada - I'm sure others can add many more examples.

I went there a few days ago. It was my first time in Liverpool and I walked for more than an hour just to get to Penny Lane... it is just a normal street but just the fact that The Beatles made a song about it is so great! I don't regret anything of that long walk to see Penny Lane, and I would do it again if I go back to Liverpool ;)

I was 16 on a cold November night when I heard on my car radio about a band called The Beatles doing a song called "She Loves You" sweeping the UK. A few months later they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and the rest, as they say, was history. I once knew a co-worker who said he wasn't impressed by the band. He was born in the early 1960s and just didn't experience the amazing changes they caused. The Beatles literally changed the world.

Imagine my delight! Discovering this Penny Lane video was like finding a hidden treasure chest full of musical gems. The Fab Four themselves! Who knew these musical legends even graced the screen on Penny Lane? What a delightful surprise! Natural-born cowboys? Witnessing The Beatles effortlessly ride horses like seasoned wranglers was a sight to behold! A fiery surprise! Spotting the fireman joining the horseback, fun added a sprinkle of unexpected charm to the video. Peace and quiet on Penny Lane? A world without paparazzi bothering The Beatles? Now that's a truly magical surprise!
