If you haven't done so already, you should treat yourself to Calvert's poetry collection "Centigrade 232" either as an actual words-on-paper book or it's also available in spoken word form, recited by Calvert. The lyrics of "Spirit of the Age" are basically two poems from his 12-part "First Landing on Medusa" cycle of poems mashed together, specifically "The Starfarer's Despatch" and "The Clone's Poem." Same with me. As a 15 year old I was tuning through the radio dial in the middle of 1977 trying to find something that wasn't pap muzak. Maybe I'd find an obscure station playing some punk or prog (I always liked both) and if not, well the radio atmospherics were better than Radio 1. Then I came across this on Radio Birmingham (now Radio WM). I haven't looked back since.

I nearly pissed myself laughing and rejoiced that Hawkwind were back on track once more. It was a symbol of cool at school to be able to recite the words verbatim.

This was the best album of the short lived Bob Calvert era of Hawkwind and Hawklords...IMHO creatively musically and lyrically it is an absolute masterclass. I've never heard this version thanks for posting. Have so many fond memories listening to Hawkwind in the late 70's and early 80's on headphones when this stuff was new brings it all back.

He wrote their big hit Silver Machine in 1972, he invented the Space Ritual concept and tour. He left for two years from mid 73 until late 75 while recording his Captain Lockheed album with all members of Hawkwind participating...His return to Hawkwind was by far the most interesting. Brock owes him the Hawkwind legacy and its very existence today. You think of Space Rock and you think Robert Calvert.

It was such a blast to hear the boys perform this at a gig in Sydney some 15 years ago...the audience energy was beyond profound, and I think Dave B was quite moved at the response. An adolescent fave of mine, it was very moving to hear/see it performed, especially with Simon House weaving gorgeous violin tendons throughout the music. A wonderful memory.

I saw them at Stonehenge in one of the last years - 1984 by my count, but may have been 83 (The Enid were also there?). Things are hazy as I was totally out of my box when they were on stage: Nik was there in his body-stocking, some dancers; lots of acid; and they played a set in the evening and then came back on stage for sunrise and basically played this song for about one hour. I think. I'm not too sure though as I wasn't in the best state to remember everything. But - I remember enough.... stunning.

this is simply mind blowing and beyond required for anyone who happens to land here. If Simon's doing the synths as the cover indicated, this was his finest hour. Everything just moves into another dimension on this track. The bass n'drum are perfectly in step, the guitars, and then there's Bob. I mean, who else writes like this? No one, no one. There's humor, there's insight, and just so much in this track. Then Dave shows us his solo skills. Never seen 'em live even though I've had this LP in the USA for 40 years. CANNOT WAIT to get to the RAH in November.
