Picture it. The Carrier Dome. Syracuse University in Syracuse New York 1992. My then girlfriend and now wife had just graduated from college. Graduation dinner and dancing held in the Dome. The Joey Thomas Big Band plays The Charleston and EVERYONE got up to dance. As my girl and I were dancing the couple next to us said to us "Look! It's Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart" (See Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life".)

My grandmother told me in the sixtiesthat we were not the first to dance apart. She listened to my rock n roll, so I listened to her music. She showed me the Charleston, She said, Grand mas only going to go down once, cause I'm not young anymore. I loved it. She was one of the first to vote in 1020 in California. I came here ro recall those days. Thank you!😎😎

What’s with this sudden surge in 1920’s music and dance? Pre great depression, is the universe trying to tell us something.

Interesting thought! Actually, we've played this number for 35 years, about 15 years with the Gatsby Girls dancing to it. Once we played it at The Savoy Hotel and a group of 6 Flappers emerged from nowhere (the 1920s perhaps?) and danced the Charleston, then disappeared at the end of the number.

@@PiccDan Certainly there are types and varieties which continue to have their small following. If it were available, so many of my generation would still be attending ball room dances, with waltz, quick step and foxtrot our pastimes. Doing the Charleston was one of my signature pieces when still a teenager - but I am more aware of what seems to be a resurgence. Suddenly on YT I find four or more channels, and it's growing, showing young people dressing and dancing a la pre Great Depression. Someone once remarked that womens hemlines were a good indicator - long, and times were good, as in the Laura Ashley dresses of the seventies. The shorter the worse the economy was heading - and now so meany seem to be little more than bum fringes !!!! :-)

“Charleston! Charleston! Made in Carolina! Some dance, some prance I'll say there's nothing finer than the Charleston, Charleston, gee how you can shuffle; Every step you do, leads to something new. Man I'm telling you, it's a lapazoo! Buck dance, wing dance will be a back number; But the Charleston, the new Charleston, That dance is surely a comer. Sometime, you'll dance it one time, That dance called Charleston, Made in South Caroline!” Courtesy of the man in the white jacket. 😄

"Charleston" is a jazz composition that was written to accompany the Charleston dance. It was composed in 1923, with lyrics by Cecil Mack and music by James P. Johnson, a composer and early leader of the stride piano school of jazz piano.

Yes they have the steps down perfectly but they're not doing the Charleston you had to be born and living in the twenties who do it properly watch the girls in the 20s through the Charleston and you'll see what I mean. It may sound crazy but you can't do the Charleston now because the Charleston was meant to be done in the twenties it just doesn't turn out right now. That's just my opinion my own opinion. I see from the other comments and I am in the minority I'm going to get some bad kickback
@PiccDan
@PiccDan 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of truth in what you say. We are always playing, say, 1920s music IN OUR OWN TIME - and it's not possible completely to recreate the dance or music of another time - artistes attempt to evoke it for our own times. That said, I feel that the Gatsby Girls are superb and bring the spirit of the 20s to life for us with their superb routines and skilful dancing.

@@PiccDan I am 83 years old and I've been into this music since I was 16 or 17 so I am a bit skewed about it and that working in the theater on wigs and hair doing a lot of 20 Styles I'm a bit you know. Friend of mine says I can still sit and pick out the arm movements and tell whether it's the twenties or thirties dance number I just the way they move their arms. So I'm nuts but you're right the Gatsby girls were very good for their time and their movements were very Charleston ask
