One thing I noticed, not just from the Piccolo vs 17 fight, but from other fights in DBZ: I always thought as a kid that the animators were using the same 3-5 attack frames for those "fast fighting" sequences. But both fighters were throwing way more different attacks during those sequences, often times double what I thought, and especially during this fight. The animators were NOT lazy 🤯

@@SensibleSaiyan There is a good plan Piccolo could have used to win looking at both this fight and the Cell fight. If Piccolo discreetly sets up a small scale hellzone grenade just before charging a light grenade. With the former attack being used to stun 17 just before the latter attack is unleashed to prevent him from using his barrier. Overall even if Piccolo couldn't win the battle he would win the war in three ways. 1. Piccolo could last long enough to buy enough time for Krillin with the remote, along with Vegeta and Future Trunks to arrive. 2. 17 being weakened enough for Tien to finish him off with a Tri-beam. Really even if Tien had used it when the Android trio were bunched together he could have arguably killed or greatly injured them. 3. Worst case the gang escapes the Androids with Goku teleporting everyone out of there like he should have done. Waiting for Vegeta and Future Trunks to come out the chamber.

Sure the animators put care into their work so it looked consistent and somewhat believable, but that isn't even close to the logic and mecanincs of a real fight. For example, this has basically no grappling, which is an essential part of many martial arts and MMA. Also basically no real fight has such long exchanges, beacuse if you keep atacking relentlessly, unless your oponent is tired or confused, you will soon be punished for overextending and opening yourself up. Real fights are much more a game of strategy and tactics than one of relentless button mashing.

@@doctorinternet8695 Yeah, but this is also fantasy martial arts between fighters which have vast superhuman strength. That is why they are so much more durable and can take so many more hits. It's a good combination between reality and also fantasy. The original dragon ball did have some grappling, if you recall some of the fights in those tournaments. But I would say that grappling is not really exciting to watch. So it made sense that they omitted that mostly and focused more on throwing kicks and punches.

Power-scaling is the norm because DBZ made every fight about ki and power level being the deciding factor. The only reason this even has such an in-depth analysis compared to other DBZ fights is because this is one of the rare instances in the series where both fighters are perfectly even in terms of power level, so it comes down to experience and battle IQ.
@07444016 ай бұрын
@@emeraldmilcham6041 Power scaling was popularized by outlets such as Death Battle, and THAT concept came from Deadliest Warrior - to take people who never actually fought and use "science" to prove who would win in a (theoretical) fight. This is not a powerscaling analysis. It is not a theoretical fight. It's a commentary on a real animation reel that has been drawn by people.

First Round was Definiately a 10-8 Round for Piccolo. He was dominating, took Control of the Pace and he scored a Knock Down and made Android 17 stumble across the Island. Second Round was a very good Start from 17 he started to take the Fight to Piccolo and started Landing more Hits. But Piccolo started to regain his Composure. It was really Close but i agree by Giving it to Android 17. 10-9. I have 19-18 Currently in Favour of Piccolo. Third Final Round was a very Close Round, 17 took Advantage of his endless Cardio by starting to tire out Piccolo in going in Fast. But Piccolo has shown more Technique because of his Experience. But Piccolo has shown a lot of Heart by finishing the Fight strong by going to the Body and Controlling the Pace before Cell came.. Third Round Piccolo 10:9. So because the Fight only lasted 3 Rounds i would give it to Piccolo by unanimous Decision. 29-27 Piccolo. Great Fight but Piccolo really has to work on his Cardio if they run it back.

You actually made a really good point about 17 opening Round 3 with the rapid strikes in order to burn out Piccolo. It's like Piccolo says when watching Vegeta's battle with 18: "There's no way Vegeta can keep fighting at this intensity." Same principle here. 17 knew Piccolo's energy would eventually start to waver if he kept him locked in with such rapid attacks. And the moment Piccolo began to fatigue and make a mistake, 17 clocked him right in the face. There's a lot more depth here than I ever gave the fight credit for.. And it is one of my favorite fights from DBZ!

Not only did they find a much more evenly matched opponent than they were expecting, but they seemingly both had actual fun with it, and without any collateral damage to top it off. Probably a pivotal moment in showing them that they didn't need to kill people to have fun. 17 would probably have won the war of attrition, but not knowing that Cell would show up, Piccolo was likely saving the light grenade as a trump card against him (17). Given 17's reaction when Piccolo used it against Cell, that may indeed have been game over for him. Their fight in isolation aside, of course Piccolo would afterwards have been bodied by 16 and 18 (or Cell, had he shown up later than he did in the show). But without the possibility of absorbing 17, Cell could not have advanced further than his second form, so Vegeta and Trunks would have been able to take care of the rest. Great video, very nice analysis of one of the best DBZ fights!

Didn't think I'd really be interested in this (I'm not into fighting sports in the slightest) but your analysis really brings home how well thought out these are, as well as how competent the characters actually are as fighters. People argue all the time that Z is less martially-inclined, as it were, than classic DB, but running these fights down the way you do here really shows you how Toriyama and the animators paid attention to the battles. Your note at the end about how even though Piccolo is running out of juice and declines throughout the fight, he still lands his shots at a rate similar to 17 is a perfect example of this, I feel. And for the record, I'm talking moreso aboit attention to detail/effort/strategy rather than "Is this rooted in real, historical fighting techniques." No argument that Z kind of loses its inspiration from real-world martial arts. Definitely going to be watching more of these!!

This is the most well rounded back-and-forth I’ve ever seen in a five Harrison and analysis. Ultimately piccolo was never going to win, because android 17 has superior stamina from his infinite power pole. That means despite what they showing at 5:17 stamina never gets weaker. Whereas with each moment after he’s reached his limit, piccolos power level drops. Power/ Strength, Speed, Stamina Endurance, Durability & “ki” energy. All that I just name is what is comprised of a Power Level: End it is just as you say it piccolo doesn’t win in the third round, which we know he’s not because this is android 17. He’s not gonna make a mistake whereas he’s going to be killed by a powerful ki blast. This was a really great fight I’m not gonna lie. It is definitely a heavily underrated fight, and that’s unfortunate because most of none of the other Z fighters are there to witness his fight. No matter what happens piccolo was always destined to lose against android 17 because they are equal stacks. More or less. The only state that is superior highly in favor of android 17 is the infinite power cord which adds to his stamina never getting weaker over the course of time. As I stated where is my pickle of his limit his power level gradually gets weaker with each moment of time passing. All in all really great fight. We definitely need to see more of this type of Level from Piccolo in the future. Rest in power to Akira Toriyama. Oh and one final tidbit, super Saiyan Vegeta was equal to android 18, it’s just a reason why I didn’t last that long is because Vegeta went into that fight air again and when you have warriors of equal stats except for the stamina advantage toward the android, he was gonna lose much sooner.

These breakdowns are super dope man! Makes me appreciate them so much more. I hope to see more. If you're not doing it already the match between Goku and Majin Vegeta would be sick🔥💪🏼

These are sick af, do perfect cell v goku next; it's another non-climax that was weirdly well choreographed for how unimportant it ended up being narratively

I love this fight and Piccolo didn't even use his Namekian physiology yet. Despite how their energy levels shift, Piccolo appears to be purposefully conserving his energy in the latter rounds and he had 17 learn his habits early. His regeneration and extended reach via arm stretching would be big parts in taking down 17, but not way could he handle 16 and 18 afterwards. He was going down one way or another.

True. I should’ve touched on that. Piccolo really didn’t use all of the tools at his disposal
